Installation
Step 1: Prepare the door and check dimensions
If drilling a new door, use the supplied template and complete door drilling instructions available at www.kwikset.com/doorprep.
- Measure to confirm the hole in the door is 2-1/8" (54 mm).
- Measure to confirm the backset is either 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60 or 70 mm).
- Measure to confirm the hole in the door edge is 1" (25 mm).
- Measure to confirm the door is between 1-3/8" and 1-3/4" (35 mm and 44 mm) thick.
*If installing this lever below an existing lock or planning to install a lock above this lever, ensure the distance between holes is at least 6-1/2" (165 mm).
Step 2: Install the latch and strike
Hold the latch in front of the door hole, with the latch face flush against the door edge.
Check if the latch holes are centered in the door hole. If yes, no adjustment is required. If no, move the pin to extend the latch.
If the door edge is chiseled:
- Install the latch in the door with supplied screws (P).
- Align tabs with holes in the collar.
- Ensure the collar snaps into place. Pull the collar to test for a tight fit.
If the door edge is not chiseled:
- Use a flathead screwdriver to lift tabs on the collar of the rectangular face to remove it from the latch.
- Install the drive-in collar.
- Install the latch in the door using a wood block and hammer.
Install the strike on the door frame. Ensure the slant of the latch bolt faces the door frame.
Step 3: Install the exterior keypad, spindle, and interior assembly
Install the exterior keypad.
Install the spindle. Ensure the rounded edge faces the latch.
Optional: Install the security set screw. For commercial use, installing this screw locks the interior cover, preventing easy access to the battery and reset button.
Connect and secure the cable to the interior assembly. Route the cable through clips. Ensure a tight cable connection. For commercial use, the red side must face left.
Install the interior assembly while holding the exterior assembly. Ensure the spindle fully engages with the interior assembly. Make sure both interior and exterior assemblies are parallel to the edge of the door before securing.
Secure the interior assembly with mounting screws (Q). Tighten screws evenly and do not overtighten.
Step 4: Install levers
Install the exterior lever. The lever handle should face away from the latch, and the hole on the lever should face down.
Insert the key and turn it 90° clockwise. Turn the key back to the vertical position to remove it.
Tighten the pre-installed set screw (H) to secure the exterior lever. To access the hidden set screw, the key must be turned horizontal.
Install and secure the interior lever (J1 or J2) by tightening its pre-installed set screw (H).
Step 5: Test latch operation
Close the door and test the latch operation. Make adjustments as needed.
The small bolt of the latch should not enter the strike hole. If it does, reposition the strike.
If the latch is loose in the strike, adjust the strike tab to grip the latch bolt better when the door is closed.
Step 6: Install battery
Remove the interior cover (L). If the security screw was installed in Step 3C, it must be removed to access the battery.
Connect a 9V battery (M).
Secure the battery into the interior assembly.
Reinstall the battery cover.
Programming
Step 7: Add user codes
Note: Move swiftly during programming. If no digit is pressed for 10 seconds, the system will time out, and you will need to restart the procedure.
- Make sure the door is open.
- Press 1. The keypad will flash green once, and you will hear one short beep.
- Press and release the Program button using the SmartKey™ tool or a paper clip. You will hear two beeps.
- Enter a User Code (4 to 8 digits). For security, the first 4 digits of each user code must be unique (e.g., you cannot program 1-2-3-4-5 and 1-2-3-4-6).
- Press Kwikset.
- You will hear one long beep and the keypad will flash green if successful. If you hear three beeps and the keypad flashes red, it was unsuccessful. Repeat from Step 1.
Step 8: OPTIONAL: Enable / Disable Programming Code
A Programming Code allows changes without needing access to the Program button, ideal for landlords. Once enabled, the Program button is disabled for regular programming and can only be used for a factory reset.
- Make sure the door is open.
- If a Programming Code is not enabled: Press and release the Program button (you will hear two beeps).
- If a Programming Code is enabled: Enter your Programming Code, then press Kwikset (you will hear one short beep and the keypad will flash green).
- Press 3. You will hear one short beep and the keypad will flash green.
- Press Kwikset.
- Enter a Programming Code (4 to 8 digits). It cannot be the same as any user code.
- Press Kwikset.
- Re-enter the Programming Code.
- Press Kwikset. You will hear one long beep and the keypad will flash green if successful. If you hear three beeps and the keypad flashes red, it was unsuccessful. Repeat from Step 1.
Step 9: Test the lock and review lock functionality
Unlocking the Door with a User Code
Enter the user code. The lock will beep twice to indicate it unlocked. Tip: Press the Kwikset button before entering your code to light up the keypad.
Unlocking the Door with a Key
To unlock using a key, turn the key clockwise to the horizontal position, then turn the lever to open the door. To remove the key, turn it back to the vertical position.
Turnpiece Functions - Choosing a Mode
- Auto-lock mode: Turnpiece vertical. Key or code is needed for entry from the outside. Lock beeps once.
- Passage mode: Turnpiece horizontal. Stays unlocked, allowing entry without a key or code. Lock beeps twice.
Emergency Egress
The interior lever of this lock will always open the door when turned, regardless of its locked or unlocked state, ensuring safe exit in emergencies.
Re-key the lock (if needed)
IMPORTANT: Remove the lever before re-keying.
Re-key the lock to work with your existing key. Refer to the supplied SmartKey™ Re-key instructions for more information.
