Installation Steps
-
Check Dimensions
Ensure your door meets the following specifications: Door hole diameter: 2-1/8 inches (54 mm). Door edge hole diameter: 1 inch (25 mm). Backset: 2-3/8 inches (60 mm) or 2-3/4 inches (70 mm). Note: If installing above or below another lock, ensure a minimum distance of 6-1/2 inches (165 mm) between holes.
-
Adjust the Backset of Latch (if needed)
Hold the latch in front of the door hole, with the latch face flush against the door edge. If the latch holes are centered in the door hole, no adjustment is required. If not centered, adjust the latch as described in "Latch Adjustment." Latch Adjustment (only if needed): Align the latch with the door edge. If the latch is not centered, rotate the latch mechanism to the correct backset (60mm or 70mm) and reinsert.
-
Install Latch
For doors with chiseled edge: Insert latch with the angle facing the jamb. For doors without chiseled edge: Insert latch with the angle facing the jamb. Correctly orient latch. Secure the latch using two screws (N).
-
Install Keypad and Mounting Plate
Feed the cable over the latch. Insert the exterior assembly (B) into the door hole. Ensure the cable goes over the latch. Attach the mounting plate (F) to the interior side of the door, keeping it parallel to the edge of the door. Secure the mounting plate with two screws (S).
-
Install Spindle
Insert the spindle (J) through the mounting plate and latch. Ensure the rounded edge faces the latch.
-
Prepare Interior Assembly and Load Battery Pack
Disassemble the interior assembly cover if necessary. Load the battery pack (H) into the interior assembly housing (G). Ensure correct polarity. For best results, use new non-rechargeable Alkaline batteries only. Do not connect the battery pack yet.
-
Install Interior Assembly
Connect the cable from the exterior assembly to the interior assembly. Ensure a tight cable connection. Push excess cable back into the door as you install the interior assembly (G). The turnbutton may need to be turned to install the interior assembly. Secure the interior assembly with two screws (T).
-
Install Levers
Attach the lever handles (L/M) to the spindle. Ensure the lever handle faces away from the latch. Tighten the pre-installed set screw (Q) on each lever.
-
Install Strike
Install the strike plate into the door jamb, securing it with two screws (P). Close the door and test the latch in the strike. If the latch is loose in the strike, adjust the strike tang. If the small bolt of the latch enters the strike hole incorrectly, reposition the strike.
-
Program the Lock
Programming instructions are located on the reverse side of this document.
-
Install Battery Cover and Re-key the Lock
Install the battery cover using screws (R). Keep the SmartKey tool (Q) in a safe place, as it will be needed to access the back panel for additional programming. If needed, re-key the lock to work with your existing key by following the supplied SmartKey Re-key instructions.
Template
If your door requires drilling, cut out the template and place it on the exterior side of the door. Complete door drilling instructions are available on the Kwikset website.
Template Dimensions: 1-3/8" (35 mm) to 1-3/4" (44 mm) door thickness. 2-3/8" (60 mm) to 2-3/4" (70 mm) backset.

SmartCode at a Glance
Exterior Keypad: Contains buttons for entering codes and operating the lock.
Interior (cover removed): Features the back panel, lock button, program button, status LED, keyway, SmartKey tool hole, turnbutton, and switches.
Programming Codes
a. Programming Information
User Codes Requirements: Each user code must be a unique code between 4 and 8 digits. A total of 8 user codes may be programmed.
How the Keypad Works: Each button represents two numbers (e.g., buttons 1 and 2 represent '1' or '2'). You only need to push the button once to input either number.
b. Enabling and Adding a Mastercode (Optional)
User codes can be programmed with or without a mastercode for enhanced security. The mastercode is not enabled by default. It is used to add and delete user codes but cannot unlock the door unless also programmed as a user code (not recommended). The mastercode must be 4-8 digits.
- Press and HOLD the Program button until the keypad flashes green (approx. 5 seconds).
- Enter the new mastercode.
- Press the Lock button once.
- Re-enter the mastercode.
- Press the Lock button once.
Programming Behavior: Successful Programming: Keypad flashes green once, one beep heard. Unsuccessful Programming: Keypad flashes red three times, three beeps heard. Timeout: If no button is pressed for five seconds, the system times out, and the procedure must be restarted.
Test: Ensure Switch #3 is ON. Press the Program button once. If you hear three beeps and see the keypad flash green three times, the mastercode is enabled.
c. Adding User Codes
Mastercode NOT enabled: 1. Press the Program button the number of times corresponding to the user code position (e.g., three times for the third code). 2. Enter the new USER code (4-8 digits). 3. Press the Lock button once. If Unsuccessful: Ensure the user code is not a duplicate and is between 4 and 8 digits. Test the code while the door is open.
Mastercode enabled: 1. Press the Program button once (keypad flashes green, three beeps heard). 2. Enter the MASTERCODE. 3. Press the Lock button once. 4. Press the Program button the number of times corresponding to the user code position. 5. Enter the new USER code (4-8 digits). 6. Press the Lock button once. If Unsuccessful: Ensure the user code is not a duplicate, is 4-8 digits, and a valid mastercode was entered. Test the code while the door is open.
d. Deleting User Codes
To delete a user code, override it by adding a different user code in the same position. Test the old user code to confirm it is inactive. Forgetting a code position may require a factory reset to delete all codes.
e. Disabling and Deleting the Mastercode
- Press and HOLD the Program button until the keypad flashes green (approx. 5 seconds).
- Press the Lock button once.
- Enter the mastercode.
- Press the Lock button once.
- Re-enter the mastercode.
- Press the Lock button once. If Unsuccessful: Ensure the mastercode was enabled before attempting to disable it. Retry, ensuring the same mastercode is entered. Test: Press the Program button once. If no three beeps or green flashes occur immediately, the mastercode is disabled.
Battery Replacement
If a deadbolt is installed above the lever, remove the interior assembly when battery replacement is required.
Normal Operation
- Unlocking the Door: Enter your user code. You can press the Lock button before entering your user code to light up the keypad.
- Locking the Door: Press the Lock button once. If no user codes are programmed, the Lock button is disabled.
Incorrect Codes
- One incorrect code entered: Keypad flashes red three times with three beeps. Re-enter the code.
- Three incorrect codes entered within one minute: Keypad flashes red 15 times with 15 beeps. Re-enter code after a 60-second keypad lockout.
Switches, Status LED Colors and Keypad Warnings
Switch # | Function | Status LED Color | Keypad Warning |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Door lock status LED blinks every 6 seconds | Green | Low battery |
2 | Lock automatically re-locks door 30 seconds after unlocking. Disabled if no codes are programmed. | Amber | Door jammed while attempting to lock |
3 | Audio feedback (beeps) | Red | No user code programmed |
4 | Not used |
Keypad Warning Details: Low battery: Keypad flashes red with fast beeping for 3-4 seconds. Replace batteries. Door jammed: Relock door. If needed, reposition strike. No user code programmed: Program at least one user code.
g. Factory Reset
A factory reset will delete all programmed codes associated with the lock.
- Remove the battery pack.
- Press and HOLD the Program button while reinserting the battery pack. Keep holding the button for 30 seconds until the lock beeps and the status LED flashes red.
- Press the Program button once more. In 20 seconds, when the LED flashes green and one beep is heard, the lock has been reset.
h. Important Safeguards
- Read all instructions in their entirety.
- Familiarize yourself with all warning and caution statements.
- Remind all family members of safety precautions.
- Restrict access to your lock's back panel and routinely check your settings to ensure they have not been altered without your knowledge.
- Protect your user codes and mastercode.
- Dispose of used batteries according to local laws and regulations.
CAUTION: Prevent unauthorized entry. Restrict access to the back panel and routinely check user codes to ensure they have not been altered. A mastercode can help protect your system's settings.
WARNING: No lock can provide complete security by itself. This lock may be defeated by forcible or technical means, or evaded by entry elsewhere on the property. No lock can substitute for caution, awareness of your environment, and common sense. Consult a qualified locksmith or other security professional to enhance security and reduce risk.
