Parts List

The following parts are included:

1 Begin with your smart home app

If using a smart home app, download it and set up your controller or hub before proceeding with lock installation.

2 Prepare the door and check dimensions

A. Check Door Compatibility: Your door is compatible if it has a standard deadbolt mounted separately from the handle below it. Doors with rim locks, mortise locks, or integrated interiors are not compatible.

If drilling a new door, use the supplied template and complete door drilling instructions available at kwikset.com/doorprep.

B. Remove Existing Deadbolt: Remove your current deadbolt from the door.

C. Check Door Hole Diameter: Measure the hole in the door. It should be either 2-1/8" (54 mm) or 1-1/2" (38 mm). Note: Additional door preparation may be required for doors with 1-1/2" (38 mm) holes; consult kwikset.com/doorprep.

D. Check Backset: Measure the backset. It should be either 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60 or 70 mm).

E. Check Door Edge Hole: Measure the hole in the door edge. It should be 1" (25 mm).

F. Check Door Thickness: Measure the door thickness. It should be between 1-3/8" and 2" (35 mm and 51 mm).

3 Install the latch and strike

A. Extend Latch Bolt: Extend the latch bolt.

B. Position Latch: Hold the latch in front of the door hole, ensuring the latch face is flush against the door edge.

C. Check D-shaped Hole Centering: Verify if the D-shaped hole is centered in the door hole. If YES, no adjustment is needed. If NO, rotate the latch face as shown to extend the latch.

D. Install Latch: Secure the latch using screws (2x from Latch/Strike Bag). Use longer screws if holes are worn; you will have two extra screws.

E. Install Strike: Install the strike plate (03809) on the door frame. Ensure the hole in the door frame is at least 1" (25 mm) deep. Use longer screws (4x from Latch/Strike Bag) closest to the door jamb.

4 Install the exterior keypad

A. Check Door Hole Diameter for Exterior Keypad: If the door hole diameter is 1-1/2" (38 mm), an Adapter Ring is required and should be installed on the Exterior Assembly. If the diameter is 2-1/8" (54 mm), the Adapter Ring is not needed.

B. Locate Screws: Find the screws (2x 48654 from For Lock Bag) for step 4C.

C. Install Exterior Keypad and Mounting Plate:

5 Install the interior assembly

A. Prepare Interior Assembly: Remove the interior cover and battery pack from the interior assembly.

B. Mount Interior Assembly: Install the interior assembly onto the mounting plate. Ensure the turnpiece shaft is aligned correctly. If the turnpiece shaft points down, place the cover back on, rotate the turnpiece until it clicks (applying force if needed), then remove the cover again. If it's still not oriented correctly, repeat this step.

C. Connect Cable: Ensure a tight cable connection. Lay excess cable flat inside the bottom of the interior housing. Use the correct screws (2x 69316 from For Lock Bag) to secure the assembly; incorrect screws can damage the product.

D. Note: Do not install batteries until step 6.

6 Install the batteries and perform the door handing process

This step teaches the lock your door's orientation, which is crucial for operation.

A. Install Batteries: Insert 4 AA batteries into the battery pack, ensuring correct polarity. Use new, non-rechargeable alkaline batteries for best results.

B. Initiate Door Handing: With the door open, press and HOLD the "Lock" button while installing the battery pack. Continue holding until the latch bolt starts moving on its own.

C. Latch Movement: The latch will retract and extend to learn the door's orientation. The bolt will only retract halfway. If the bolt does not move, ensure batteries are installed correctly and repeat step 6B.

D. Status LED: The Status LED indicates success or failure. Green means door handing was successful; proceed to the next step. Red means it was unsuccessful; ensure the lock interior and batteries are correctly installed, then repeat step 6B.

After successful handing, the status LED blinks every 6 seconds: amber for locked, green for unlocked.

7 Pair the lock with your smart home system

A. Initiate Pairing: Start the pairing process through your smart home system (app, panel, or hub). Refer to your system's instructions.

B. QR Code: You may be prompted to scan the QR code on the interior assembly. If not, proceed to step C.

C. Initiate at Lock: When prompted by your system, press button "A" on the lock interior four times.

D. Rename Lock: If pairing is successful, rename the lock in your system as needed.

E. Troubleshooting Pairing: If pairing fails, press button "B" nine times. Repeat steps 7A-7D. If still unsuccessful, remove (exclude/unpair) the lock from any other network using your smart home system's instructions, then repeat steps 7A-7D.

8 Add user codes (30 maximum)

It is recommended to add and delete user codes via your smart home system. If your system doesn't support this, codes can be added directly to the lock.

A. Programming Information:

B. Start Programming: Ensure the door is open. Press the "Program" button once.

C. Enter User Code: Enter a new user code. Codes must be unique, between 4 and 8 digits, depending on your smart home system. Up to 30 user codes can be programmed.

D. Confirm Code: Press the "Lock" button once.

E. Programming Feedback:

*Beeping sound is only heard if switch #3 is in the 'on' position.

9 Test the lock and check door alignment

A. Test with Door Open: With the door open, press the "Lock" button. Confirm the door locks.

B. Test Unlock: Enter the user code(s) added previously. Confirm the door unlocks.

C. Test with Door Closed: Close the door. Press the "Lock" button. Confirm the door locks smoothly without error.

D. Troubleshooting Alignment: If the door does not lock smoothly, ensure you used the supplied latch and strike. If issues persist, contact Kwikset Support (1-866-863-6584) to order a Warped Door Service Kit.

10 Install the interior cover

Important Information about the Interior Cover: The window on the interior cover is locked by default to prevent tampering. To unlock it for easier access to programming buttons, slide it up or remove the security screw.

Cover Installation:

Battery Pack Access: If the window is unlocked, remove the window to access the battery pack. If locked, remove the interior cover and screws.

Troubleshooting

A complete SmartCode 914 Programming and Troubleshooting Guide is available at www.kwikset.com.

Deleting a single user code (manually at the lock)

All codes can be deleted at once if the mastercode is enabled. Consult the SmartCode 914 Programming and Troubleshooting Guide at www.kwikset.com for mastercode details.

  1. Keep door open. Press "Program" button once.
  2. Press "Lock" button once.
  3. Enter user code to be deleted.
  4. Press "Lock" button once.
  5. Re-enter user code.
  6. Press "Lock" button once.

Test Code: While the door is open, test the user code to confirm it no longer unlocks the door.

If unsuccessful: Ensure the same valid code is entered in steps 3 and 5.

Factory Reset

A factory reset deletes all codes and removes the lock from your smart home system.

  1. Remove battery pack.
  2. Press and HOLD the "Program" button while reinserting the battery pack. Keep holding for 30 seconds until the lock beeps and the status LED flashes red.
  3. Press the "Program" button once more. The lock is reset when the LED flashes green and one beep is heard.
  4. Perform the door handing process again (Step 6) to teach the lock door orientation, pair with your smart home system, and add user codes.

If no button is pressed for five seconds, the system times out, and you must restart the procedure.

Network Information

ZigBee System Notes: ZigBee is a wireless mesh network. Results may vary based on building construction and communication path. Typical installed distance is 35+ feet in a standard home, or 250+ feet with a clear line of sight to the controller/hub. Additional ZigBee devices may be needed to enhance the communication path for a more robust network.

Removing the lock from the network: Press button "B" on the lock interior nine times.

SmartKey Re-Keying

Re-key the lock to work with your existing key. Refer to the supplied SmartKey re-key instructions for details. Note: If Auto-Lock is enabled, remove the battery pack before re-keying.

Important Safeguards

  1. Read all instructions in their entirety.
  2. Familiarize yourself with all warning and caution statements.
  3. Remind all family members of safety precautions.
  4. Protect your user codes and mastercode.
  5. Dispose of used batteries according to local laws and regulations.

CAUTION: Prevent unauthorized entry. Restrict access to the back panel and routinely check user codes, as anyone with access can change them. Use of a mastercode can help protect system settings.

WARNING: No lock can provide complete security by itself. This lock may be defeated by forcible or technical means, or bypassed elsewhere on the property. No lock substitutes for caution, awareness, and common sense. Consult a qualified locksmith or security professional to enhance security and reduce risk.
