1. Prepare the Door and Check Dimensions
If drilling a new door, use the supplied template and complete door drilling instructions available at www.kwikset.com/doorprep.
- Door Hole Diameter: Confirm the hole is 2-1/8" (54 mm) or 1-1/2" (38 mm).
- Backset: Measure to confirm the backset is 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60 or 70 mm).
- Door Edge Hole: Measure to confirm the hole in the door edge is 1" (25 mm).
- Door Thickness: Measure to confirm the door is between 1-3/8" and 2" (35 mm and 51 mm) thick.
Note: Additional door preparation may be required for doors with 1-1/2" (38 mm) holes. Consult www.kwikset.com/doorprep.
2. Install the Latch and Strike
Step 2A: Check if the door edge is chiseled.
Step 2B: Hold the latch in front of the door hole, with the latch face flush against the door edge.
Step 2C: Check if the D-shaped hole is centered in the door hole. If not, rotate the latch face as shown to extend the latch bolt.
Step 2D: Select the correct latch (A or B) based on the door edge condition. If using latch "A" and the bolt is not extended, extend it as shown. If using latch "B" (not included), extend it similarly.
Step 2E: Install the strike on the door frame. Ensure the hole is drilled a minimum of 1" (25 mm) deep. Use longer screws (S) installed closest to the door jamb.
3. Install the Exterior Keypad
Step 3A: Determine the door hole diameter. If it's 1-1/2" (38 mm), install adapter "D" onto exterior assembly "F". If it's 2-1/8" (54 mm), adapter "D" is not needed.
Step 3B: Locate and keep screws "T" within reach.
Step 3C: Install the exterior keypad and mounting plate. Route the cable underneath the latch and ensure it's parallel to the door edge. Support the exterior assembly during mounting plate installation. Tighten screws "T" evenly.
Step 3E: Insert a key ? and test the latch. If it doesn't operate smoothly, adjust screws "T". Remove the key and ensure the latch bolt is fully extended.
4. Install the Interior Assembly
Step 4A: Remove the battery cover and battery pack ? from the interior assembly.
Step 4B: Install the interior assembly onto the mounting plate. Ensure the turnpiece is in the vertical position and the turnpiece shaft is rotated correctly. Ensure a tight cable connection. Route excess cable flat inside the bottom of the interior housing.
Note: Do not install batteries until Step 5.
5. Install the Batteries and Perform the Door Handing Process
This step teaches the lock the orientation of your door and is crucial to lock operation.
Step 5A: Install 4 AA batteries ? in the battery pack, ensuring correct polarity. For best results, use new, non-rechargeable alkaline batteries only.
Step 5B: Press and HOLD the Lock button ? while installing the battery pack. Hold the button until the latch bolt starts moving on its own.
Step 5C: Check if the latch bolt retracted and extended on its own. (Note: Latch bolt will only retract halfway.)
- YES: Door handing process was successful! Proceed to the next step after the latch bolt stops moving.
- NO: Remove the battery pack, wait 15 seconds, then attempt the process again.
6. Add the Lock to Your Smart Home System
Step 6A: Initiate the process to add the lock to your system at your smart home controller. Refer to your smart home system instructions for more information.
Step 6B: When prompted by your smart home system to add the lock, press button "A" on the lock interior one time. The red LED will illuminate when the lock enters Add Mode.
Step 6C: If successful, re-name the lock in your system (if applicable).
Step 6D: If unsuccessful, follow your system's instructions to remove the lock from the controller and any other network, then press button "A" on the lock one time. Perform steps 6A-6C again. If still unsuccessful, consult the Programming and Troubleshooting Guide on the SmartCode 914 page at www.kwikset.com.
7. Add User Codes (30 Max)
It is recommended that you add and delete all user codes through your smart home control system. If your system does not allow this, codes may be added directly to the lock as shown here.
Programming Timeout: During programming, if no button is pressed for five seconds, the system will time out (indicated by three beeps and a red flashing keypad), and you will need to restart the procedure.
Step 7A: Make sure the door is open. Press the Program button once.
Step 7B: Enter user code. A total of 30 user codes may be programmed. Each user code must be a unique code between 4 and 8 digits, depending on your smart home system.
Step 7C: Press Lock button ? once.
Step 7D: Check the lock's response: One green flash with one beep ✔️ indicates programming was successful. Three red flashes with three beeps ❌ indicates programming was unsuccessful.
Mastercode: For enhanced security, a mastercode may be used when adding and deleting user codes. For more information about the mastercode, download the Programming and Troubleshooting Guide on the SmartCode 914 page at kwikset.com.
*Beeping sound will only be heard if switch #3 (on the lock interior) is in the ON position. See "Switches and Status LED Colors" on page 4.
8. Test the Lock (Review Normal Operation)
Confirm that the code(s) added in the previous step can unlock the door.
Locking the Door: Press Lock button ? once.
Unlocking the Door: Enter user code.
Tip: You can press the Lock button ? before entering your user code to light up the keypad at night.
9. Re-key the Lock (if needed) and Install the Battery Cover
Step 9A: Re-key the lock (if needed). IMPORTANT: Remove battery pack ? before re-keying. Re-key the lock to work with your existing key. See the supplied SmartKey Re-key instructions for more information.
Step 9B: Install the battery cover.
