Installation
Step 1: Prepare the door and check dimensions
If drilling a new door, use the supplied template and instructions at www.kwikset.com/doorprep.
- Door Hole Diameter: Measure to confirm the hole is 2-1/8" (54 mm) or 1-1/2" (38 mm).
- Backset: Measure to confirm the backset is 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60 or 70 mm).
- Door Edge Hole: Measure to confirm the hole in the door edge is 1" (25 mm).
- Door Thickness: Measure to confirm the door is between 1-3/8" and 2" (35 mm and 51 mm) thick.
Step 2: Install the latch and strike
- Door Edge Chiseled?
- If YES (chiseled): Use latch "A". Extend the latch bolt if necessary.
- If NO (not chiseled): Use latch "B" (not included). Extend the latch bolt if necessary.
- Position Latch: Hold the latch in front of the door hole, with the latch face flush against the door edge.
- D-shaped Hole Centering: Check if the D-shaped hole is centered. If not, rotate the latch face to extend the latch.
- Install Strike: Install the strike on the door frame. Ensure the hole is at least 1" (25 mm) deep. Place longer screws (S) closest to the door jamb.
Step 3: Install the exterior keypad
- Hole Diameter Check: Confirm the door hole diameter (2-1/8" or 1-1/2").
- Install Adapter Ring: Install adapter ring "D" onto part "F" if the hole diameter is 1-1/2" (38 mm). Discard "D" if the hole is 2-1/8" (54 mm).
- Mount Keypad and Plate: Feed the cable underneath the latch. Keep the exterior assembly parallel to the door edge. Install the mounting plate and keypad, then tighten screws "T" evenly.
Step 4: Install the interior assembly
- Prepare Interior Assembly: Remove the battery cover and battery pack from the interior assembly.
- Mount Interior Assembly: Install the interior assembly onto the mounting plate. Route the cable through the center hole, then push it into the bottom hole. Ensure a tight cable connection. Lay excess cable flat inside the bottom of the interior housing.
- Turnpiece Alignment: If the turnpiece is pointing down, rotate it 180° clockwise until it clicks.
- Test Latch: Insert the SmartKey tool "T" and test the latch. Ensure it extends and retracts smoothly. Adjust screws "T" if needed. Remove the tool and ensure the latch bolt is fully extended.
Step 5: Set locking and unlocking direction
Important: This step teaches the lock the door's orientation and is crucial for operation. Do not install batteries until this step.
- Install Batteries: Install 4 AA batteries into the battery pack, ensuring correct polarity. Use new, non-rechargeable alkaline batteries for best results.
- Initiate Handing: Make sure the door is open and the latch is extended. Press and hold the Lock button.
- Insert Battery Pack: While holding the Lock button, insert the battery pack.
- Learn Direction: The latch bolt will retract and extend on its own to learn the locking and unlocking direction. A green flashing LED indicates success; a solid red LED indicates failure. If unsuccessful, repeat from step 5A.
Operation
Step 6: Add the lock to your smart home system
- Initiate the pairing process on your smart home controller.
- When prompted, press button "A" on the lock interior once. The red LED will illuminate as the lock enters Add Mode.
- If successful, rename the lock in your system. Allow time for the controller to add the lock.
- If unsuccessful, remove the lock from your system, then press button "A" again. Consult the Programming and Troubleshooting Guide at www.kwikset.com if issues persist.
Step 7: Add user codes (30 max)
It is recommended to manage user codes via your smart home system. If direct programming is needed:
- With the door open, press the Program button once.
- Enter a user code (4-8 digits, unique).
- Press the Lock button once.
- Success: One green flash with one beep (if audio is enabled).
- Failure: Three red flashes with three beeps (if audio is enabled). If programming fails, ensure no more than 5 seconds pass between steps, the code is valid, and there is room for more codes.
Step 8: Test the lock
Confirm that the added user code(s) can unlock the door. Press the Lock button to lock the door. Press the Lock button before entering a code to light the keypad.
Step 9: Install the interior cover
The window on the interior cover is locked by default. Remove the security screw to unlock it for easier access to programming buttons and the battery pack.
- Install the interior cover, aligning the turnpiece shaft.
- Install screws "V" (x3) to secure the cover.
- If the window was unlocked, slide it up for convenient access. If locked, remove the cover to access the battery pack.
