- Personnel working on refrigerant circuits must hold a valid certificate of competence.
Examples for working procedures:
- Breaking into the refrigerating circuit.
- Opening of sealed components.
- Opening of ventilated enclosures.
1 Transport of equipment containing flammable refrigerants:
See transport regulations.
2 Marking of equipment using signs:
See local regulations.
3 Disposal of equipment using flammable refrigerants:
See national regulations.
4 Storage of equipment/appliances:
Follow manufacturer's instructions.
5 Storage of packed (unsold) equipment:
Storage package protection must prevent mechanical damage that could cause refrigerant leaks. Maximum storage quantity is determined by local regulations.
6 Information on servicing:
- Checks to the area: Perform safety checks to minimize ignition risk before working on systems with flammable refrigerants.
- Work procedure: Undertake work under a controlled procedure to minimize risk of flammable gas/vapor.
- General work area: Instruct staff on work nature. Avoid confined spaces. Section off workspace. Ensure area is safe by controlling flammable material.
- Checking for presence of refrigerant: Use an appropriate refrigerant detector to ensure awareness of potentially flammable atmospheres. Ensure leak detection equipment is suitable for flammable refrigerants (non-sparking, sealed, intrinsically safe).
- Presence of fire extinguisher: Have appropriate fire extinguishing equipment (dry powder or CO2) available for hot work.
- No ignition sources: Keep all ignition sources (including smoking) away from areas where flammable refrigerant may be released. Survey the area for hazards before work. Display "No Smoking" signs.
- Ventilated area: Ensure adequate ventilation before and during work, especially when breaking into the system or conducting hot work. Ventilation should disperse released refrigerant externally.
- Checks to the refrigeration equipment: Ensure electrical components are fit for purpose and specifications. Follow manufacturer's guidelines. Check refrigerant charge against room size, ventilation adequacy, secondary circuit for refrigerant, and legibility of markings. Ensure components are resistant to corrosion.
- Checks to electrical devices: Perform initial safety checks and component inspection. If a fault compromises safety, do not connect electrical supply until rectified. Use temporary solutions if necessary, and report to owner.
- Initial safety checks: Ensure capacitors are discharged safely, no live electrical components are exposed, and earth bonding continuity exists.
- Sealed electrical components must be replaced.
- During repairs to sealed components: Disconnect all electrical supplies before removing covers. If electrical supply is necessary, use a permanently operating leak detector. Check for cable damage, excessive connections, incorrect terminals, seal damage, gland fitting, and secure mounting. Ensure seals prevent ingress of flammable atmospheres. Use manufacturer-specified replacement parts.
- Note: Silicon sealant may inhibit leak detection. Intrinsically safe components must be replaced.
8 Intrinsically safe components must be replaced:
Do not apply inductive or capacitance loads without ensuring they do not exceed permissible voltage/current. Intrinsically safe components can be worked on live in the presence of flammable atmosphere. Use correctly rated test apparatus. Replace components only with manufacturer-specified parts.
9 Cabling:
Check cabling for wear, corrosion, excessive pressure, vibration, sharp edges, or other adverse environmental effects, including aging and continual vibration.
10 Detection of flammable refrigerants:
Do not use ignition sources for leak detection. Use electronic leak detectors, calibrated in a refrigerant-free area. Ensure detectors are not ignition sources and are suitable for the refrigerant. Set detectors to the appropriate LFL percentage (25% maximum). Leak detection fluids are suitable, but avoid those containing chlorine. If a leak is suspected, remove naked flames. If brazing is required, recover or isolate refrigerant.
11 Removal and evacuation:
Follow conventional procedures for breaking into the refrigerant circuit, with emphasis on flammability. Procedures include safe refrigerant removal, evacuation, purging with inert gas (optional for A2L), and opening the circuit. Recover refrigerant into correct cylinders. Purge systems with oxygen-free nitrogen. Do not use compressed air or oxygen for purging. Repeat purging until no refrigerant remains. Vent to atmospheric pressure for work.
12 Charging procedures:
Ensure no refrigerant contamination. Use short hoses. Keep cylinders in the correct position. Earth the refrigeration system before charging. Label the system upon completion. Do not overfill. Pressure test with OFN before recharging. Leak test upon completion and before commissioning. Perform follow-up leak test.
13 Decommissioning:
Technicians must be familiar with equipment. Recover refrigerants safely. Take oil and refrigerant samples if analysis is required. Ensure electrical power is available. Become familiar with equipment operation. Isolate system electrically. Ensure mechanical handling equipment, PPE, supervision, and conforming recovery equipment/cylinders are available. Pump down system if possible. If vacuum is not possible, use a manifold. Place cylinder on scales before recovery. Start recovery machine per instructions. Do not overfill cylinders (max 80% liquid charge). Do not exceed cylinder working pressure. Promptly remove cylinders and equipment after filling, closing all isolation valves. Recovered refrigerant must not be charged into another system unless cleaned and checked.
14 Labeling:
Label equipment as decommissioned and emptied of refrigerant, with date and signature. Ensure labels indicate the presence of flammable refrigerant.
15 Recovery:
Remove refrigerants safely for servicing or decommissioning. Use appropriate recovery cylinders. Ensure correct number of cylinders are available and labeled. Cylinders must have pressure relief valves. Evacuate and cool empty cylinders before use. Recovery equipment must be in good working order with instructions. Use calibrated weighing scales. Hoses must have leak-free couplings. Process recovered refrigerant according to local legislation. Do not mix refrigerants. Evacuate compressors and oils to remove refrigerant before removal. Do not heat compressor bodies with open flames.
