IKEA HILLESJÖN Sink Installation Guide
Overview and Preparation
This guide provides instructions for installing the IKEA HILLESJÖN sink. Always follow the specific installation instructions provided with your mixer tap and water-trap.
Important: Silicone sealant and mounting hardware (screws, wall/ceiling fixings) are not included with the sink. You will need to purchase these separately.
To ensure a watertight installation and prevent water damage, it is essential to seal the gap between the countertop and the sink with silicone sealant. When selecting mounting hardware, choose screws and fixings that are appropriate for your wall or ceiling material and have sufficient load-bearing capacity. If you are unsure, consult a local specialist dealer.
Tools and Materials
You will typically need the following tools and materials:
- Screwdriver
- Sealant applicator or spatula
- Pencil
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Jigsaw
- Drill
- Drill bits (approx. 3 mm / 1/8" and 8 mm / 5/16")
- Sealant gun
- Silicone sealant (purchased separately)
- Mounting screws/fittings (purchased separately)
Countertop Cutout
Accurate measurement and cutting of the countertop are crucial for a proper sink fit.
Marking the Cutout:
- Position the sink template or the sink itself on the countertop to mark the cutting line.
- Ensure correct placement, typically maintaining distances like 55 mm (2 1/8") from one edge and 65 mm (2 9/16") from another edge of the countertop. The overall length for the cutout is approximately 650 mm (25 9/16").
- When marking the precise cut line, use a 10 mm (3/8") offset from the sink's outer edge.
Cutting the Opening:
- Drill pilot holes (approx. 3 mm / 1/8") at each corner of the marked cutout area. These holes allow the jigsaw blade to start cutting.
- Drill larger holes (approx. 8 mm / 5/16") within the marked area to facilitate the jigsaw's entry.
- Carefully use a jigsaw to cut along the marked line, creating the sink opening.
Sealing and Initial Sink Preparation
Apply a continuous bead of silicone sealant around the entire perimeter of the countertop cutout. This creates a watertight seal.
Use a sealant applicator or spatula to smooth the sealant for a neat finish.
On the underside of the sink, attach the adhesive pads (usually 6 pieces) as indicated. These are typically placed approximately 60 mm (2 3/8") from the sink's edges to aid in positioning.
Mounting the Sink
Attach the provided mounting brackets (typically 8 pieces) to the designated points on the underside of the sink.
Carefully lower the sink into the prepared countertop opening. Ensure it sits evenly and is correctly aligned.
Secure the sink by fastening the mounting brackets. Use a screwdriver for this step. It is recommended to hand-tighten or use a screwdriver, avoiding a power drill for the final tightening to prevent overtightening or damage to the countertop or sink.
Final Steps
Install your mixer tap and water-trap according to their specific instructions.
Ensure there is a minimum clearance of 65 mm (2 9/16") from the base of the mixer tap to the edge of the sink for optimal functionality and ease of use.
