Household Fire Safety Audit
To minimize fire danger, conduct a household fire safety audit and develop a fire escape plan.
- Check electrical appliances and outlets for safety (frayed cords, overloaded circuits). Consult a professional if uncertain.
- Store flammable liquids safely in closed containers in a cool, well-ventilated area. Avoid cleaning with flammable liquids.

Develop and rehearse a family escape plan. Every family member should participate. Study escape routes, ensure bedrooms have accessible exits, and keep ground-level exits clear. Designate an assembly point. Emphasize quick escape; do not investigate fires or gather belongings. Rehearse the plan regularly and revise it as conditions change. Test your fire warning system weekly and contact your installer if unsure. Consider a fire safety inspection from your local fire department.
