FireAngel Optical Smoke Alarm & Heat Alarm User Manual

This manual provides instructions for FireAngel Optical Smoke Alarms (Models FA6611, FA6615, FA6620) and Heat Alarms (Model FA6720).

Optical smoke alarms are suitable for detecting slow smouldering fires. They may be susceptible to nuisance alarms from steam and should not be placed near bathrooms. For the earliest warning, it is recommended that smoke and heat alarms are fitted in rooms where the temperature is between 4°C and 38°C. Prolonged exposure to temperatures outside this range may reduce product life.

The FA6720 heat alarm is specified for Class A1 detection and will sound a warning when the ambient temperature in a room reaches between 54°C and 65°C. For optimal protection, heat alarms should always be installed as part of a comprehensive fire protection system that includes smoke alarms.

Always check local building and fire regulations for your property to ensure compliance.

WARNING: Experience indicates that children may not be woken by fire alarm tones. It is crucial that children are never left unsupervised in a house. Families should establish and rehearse a fire escape plan so that everyone knows how to evacuate during a fire. The immediate priority during a fire is to ensure any sleeping children are woken and safely evacuated outside the property, along with all other occupants. The fire and rescue service should be contacted without delay, regardless of the fire's perceived size.

This user manual is also available in large text and other formats. Please contact technicalsupport@fireangeltech.com or call 0330 094 5830 for further information.

1. Positioning

In which room should the alarm be installed?

  • Smoke Alarms (FA6611, FA6615, FA6620): Suitable for landings, hallways, bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms.
  • Heat Alarm (FA6720): Suitable for kitchens, garages, and lofts.
  • FA6611 Escape Light Alarm: Recommended for corridors along escape routes to illuminate the path to safety.

These alarms are suitable for use in mobile homes and caravans. They are not intended for non-residential, commercial, or industrial applications, nor for any purpose other than described.

Where in the room should the alarm be installed?

  • Smoke Alarms: Should be sited at least 300mm from light fittings and walls, ideally positioned centrally in the room. Position smoke alarms no more than 600mm vertically below the highest point in the room. If mounting on a wall, the top of the detection element must be between 150mm and 300mm below the ceiling and at least 300mm from any neighbouring wall.
  • Heat Alarms: Should be sited at a distance no greater than 5.3m from the farthest wall, no greater than 5.3m from a door to any room in which a fire might start, and no greater than 5.3m from the next heat or smoke alarm. Heat alarms should be sited at least 300mm from light fittings and walls. Heat alarms should not be fitted on a wall.

Ensure alarm locations comply with BS 5839: Part 6 or relevant Building Regulations.

2. Installation

Step 1: FA6611 and FA6615 Replaceable Battery Alarms

If the alarm requires AA batteries, remove the base plate from the alarm by twisting it anti-clockwise and insert the batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+ to +). This action activates the alarm.

Step 2: Baseplate Installation (All Alarms: FA6611, FA6615, FA6620, FA6720)

  1. Drill holes into the ceiling or wall using the provided template and secure the baseplate using the supplied screws.
  2. Push and twist the alarm clockwise onto the baseplate.

Note: For FA6620 and FA6720 models, the alarm activates only when installed on the baseplate. For FA6611 and FA6615 models, inserting the batteries activates the alarm.

After activation, the red LED on the front of the alarm should flash approximately once every 40 seconds to indicate it is active. The alarm test sound pattern is: 3 beeps, followed by a 1.5-second pause, then 3 beeps. The LED will flash once per second during testing.

Press the Test / button. The alarm will sound at a reduced volume. The FA6611 model will also illuminate its escape light. To hear the alarm at full volume, double-press the Test / button.

3. Maintenance

  1. Test the alarm monthly by pressing the central Test / button.
  2. Vacuum your alarm every 3 months.
  3. Do not use cleaners or solvents on the alarm.
  4. Do not paint the alarm.
  5. Replace the alarm every 10 years.

Do not use any test method other than the one described in this manual. Do not tamper with the alarm, as this could cause electric shock or malfunction.

4. Low Battery Warning

When the alarm battery is low, the alarm will emit a 'chirp' and the red operational LED will flash once every 40 seconds.

For FA6611 and FA6615 Replaceable Battery Alarms

  1. Carefully turn the alarm anti-clockwise to remove it from the baseplate.
  2. Replace the batteries immediately (within 30 days).
  3. Always test the alarm after replacing the batteries.

FA6611 or FA6615 alarms require 2 x AA batteries. Under normal use, batteries should last approximately three years for FA6611 and five years for FA6615. Recommended batteries include Duracell AA MN1500 Alkaline, GP AA GN15A Alkaline, and Energizer AA L91 Lithium.

For FA6620 and FA6720 Sealed Battery Alarms

  1. Carefully turn the alarm anti-clockwise to remove the device from the baseplate.
  2. Replace the alarm immediately (within 30 days).

*If your alarm is still under warranty, contact Technical Support.

5. Fault Indication

If there is a fault, the alarm will 'chirp' twice and flash twice every 40 seconds.

If the alarm is still within warranty, contact Technical Support. If it is no longer under warranty, replace the alarm immediately.

Troubleshooting Guide

  • If your smoke/heat alarm does not sound during testing: Check device activation. Allow a few seconds for settling after installation. Double-press the Test / button for full volume. If silenced/low sensitivity, wait 15 minutes and try again. For FA6611/FA6615, replace the battery.
  • If your smoke/heat alarm activates for a known false alarm: Check the device location and clean the alarm.
  • If your smoke/heat alarm sounds unusual or chirps intermittently: Check the device location, clean the alarm, and verify the source of the chirping, ensuring it is not another alarm.
  • If you experience frequent unwanted alarms: Check the device location and clean the alarm.
  • If a fault or End of Life is indicated: Replace the alarm immediately.
  • If the light on the FA6611 fails to illuminate: Check if the device is within its warranty period. If so, contact Technical Support; otherwise, replace the alarm immediately.

6. Silence Feature

In the event of a fire, your alarm will sound 3 beeps continuously, and the LED will flash once per second. The FA6611 Escape Light Alarm will illuminate continuously.

For nuisance alarms (e.g., cooking fumes), press the Test / button to temporarily silence the alarm for 10 minutes. The LED will continue to flash once per second to indicate Silence mode. The alarm will automatically return to full sensitivity after 10 minutes.

NEVER IGNORE ANY ALARM. If an alarm sounds, it is a warning of a potentially hazardous situation. Ignoring it may result in injury or death. If your smoke or heat alarm activates and you are not certain of the fire's source, evacuate everyone from the house immediately.

Note for FA6720 Heat Alarms: After sounding for 30 minutes, the audible alarm signal will increase the pause between alerts (by approximately 12 seconds) to conserve power. The LED will continue to flash once every second.

7. Sleep Easy™ Feature

If a low battery 'chirp' occurs at night, the alarm can be silenced to allow sleep.

  1. Press the Test / button.
  2. The alarm will silence for 8 hours, and the red LED will continue to flash.
  3. Take action to replace the alarm or batteries the next day (refer to the Low Battery Warning section).

Take action as soon as possible to ensure protection in case of fire. Your alarm will still detect smoke or heat during Sleep Easy mode, but you must replace the alarm or batteries within 30 days.

  • For FA6611 or FA6615 alarms signalling low batteries, replace the batteries promptly. Once replaced, the Sleep Easy feature will be disabled for 30 days.
  • For FA6620 or FA6720 alarms, replace the alarm. If the device is still within warranty, contact Technical Support.

Note: A low battery 'chirp' can be silenced a maximum of 10 times. Alarms indicating a Fault or End of Life cannot be silenced.
