Monitoring Your Weight, Body Fat Composition, Hydration, Bone Mass, and BMI Levels

Note: Make sure you have programmed your personal data. For a record to be stored, the scale must record all measurement readings. Place the scale on a flat, level surface. A hard surface is best for maximum accuracy.

  1. Press the SELECT button.
  2. Press the [up-arrow] or [down-arrow] buttons to select the desired USER and press SELECT. Your last weight and body fat will automatically appear on the screen, followed by your hydration reading.
  3. Wait until "0.0" appears on the display.
  4. Stand on the scale with bare feet. If you are wearing shoes or socks, the scale will not be able to read your body fat %. An "E" will be displayed on the lower half of the display.
  5. During weight measurement, the display will flash. The first screen displays your weight and body fat percentage. The second screen displays your weight and hydration. The third screen displays your bone mass and BMI.
  6. The scale will turn off automatically after a few seconds of inactivity.

Weight-Only Function

If you only need your weight measurement, use the Instant On or Tap On methods:

Tap On Method

Instant On Method

Note: During "Instant On" weighing, if you see "-", the scale has recalibrated. Please step off and back onto the scale to weigh yourself again.

Whether you remain standing on the scale or step off immediately after your weight is displayed, your weight will continue to display for a few seconds and then turn off automatically.

Reviewing Saved Records (History)

Note: The scale can save up to 10 records per user. For a record to be stored, the scale must record all measurement readings.

  1. Press the SELECT button.
  2. Press the [up-arrow] or [down-arrow] buttons to select the desired USER and press SELECT. Your last weight and body fat will automatically appear on the screen, followed by your hydration, bone mass, and BMI reading.

  2. Use the tip of a pen to loosen each battery. Hold the scale at an angle to allow the batteries to slide out.
  3. Insert four new batteries, pressing them firmly into their slots.
  4. Replace the battery cover.
  5. Set the Time/Date (refer to ADJUSTING TIME AND DATE section).

Caring for Your Scale

Periodically wipe the scale surface down with a DRY cloth to remove dust.

Caution: Weight exceeding the capacity (400 lb/181 kg) may damage your scale. Ensure no weight is applied to the scale while not in use to prevent battery drainage. This product is designed for personal use only, not for commercial or industrial use. This unit is not waterproof; avoid contact with excessive moisture.

Body Hydration

Body hydration percentage indicates the amount of fluids in your body. Water is important for regulating body temperature, converting food into energy, and protecting vital organs. Individuals with more body fat have proportionately less total body water and are more susceptible to fluid imbalances that cause dehydration.

Tracking Your Body Hydration Level

Consider the following when tracking your body hydration level:

Body Hydration Levels

Body hydration ranges, shown as a percentage of your body weight:

AgeFemaleMale
Newborn75%80%
1-565%65%
10-1660%60%
17-3950%60%
40-5947%55%
60+45%50%

Please consult with your physician to determine the appropriate hydration level for your body.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body mass index (BMI) is a way to determine if you are at a healthy weight. It measures your weight in relation to your height and is closely associated with measures of body fat. A higher BMI indicates a greater risk of developing health problems.

BMI is used by healthcare providers to assess a person's risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, or other health problems.

BMI for Adults

For adults over 20 years old, BMI falls into one of the following categories:

BMIWeight Status
Below 18.5Low
18.5 - 24.9Normal
25.0 - 29.9High
30.0 and AboveVery High

To determine the BMI appropriate for your body, consult your physician.

What should I do if my BMI measurement is too high?

If your BMI is between 25 and 30 and you are otherwise healthy, try to avoid gaining more weight and look into healthy ways to lose weight and increase physical activity. Talk to your healthcare provider about losing weight if:

BMI Limitations

Because BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle, it is not the sole predictor of a weight issue that could lead to health problems. For example, someone with a lot of muscle (like a bodybuilder) may have a BMI in the unhealthy range but still be healthy. BMI may also not accurately reflect body fatness in people under 5 feet (1.5m) or older people who tend to lose muscle mass. However, for most people, BMI is a reliable indicator of health risk related to weight.

Your Healthy Lifestyle

Health and fitness involve a balanced combination of eating right and exercising. To achieve a healthy lifestyle, set realistic fitness goals and reduce calorie intake. When dieting, you may lose weight but also lose beneficial muscle and bone tissue. Instead, reduce calorie intake by eating more healthful foods and include exercise to burn fat and lose weight faster. Exercise improves circulation, relieves stress, and speeds up metabolism.

Bone Mass

This feature measures the weight of bone or the amount of mineralized tissue in the bone in your body.

Importance of Bone Mass

The amount of bone in the skeleton at any age is the result of bone gained during growth and bone lost with aging. Skeletal maturity and peak bone mass (PBM) occur around age 20-30. Building maximum bone mass helps counteract inevitable bone loss caused by aging.

Critical Years of Building Bone Mass

Studies show bone mass gains are rapid during adolescence, with up to 25% of PBM acquired during the adolescent growth spurt. During the peak growth spurt, boys and girls reach 90% of adult stature but only 57% of adult bone mineral content. At least 90% of PBM is acquired by age 18.

Gender Differences

Peak bone mass tends to be higher in men than women. Before puberty, boys and girls acquire bone mass at similar rates. After puberty, men tend to acquire greater bone mass.

Tracking of Bone Mass

The amount of bone gained during adolescence is the main contributor to PBM, a major determinant of osteoporosis and fracture risk in elderly persons.

Determinants of Bone Mass

About three-fourths of the variance in peak bone mass is attributable to hereditary factors. The remaining fraction is caused by environmental factors like nutrition and physical activity.

Heredity

Heredity is an important determinant, accounting for 60% to 80% of bone mass variance, according to studies.

Physical Activity

Exercise and physical activity have beneficial effects on bone mass, well-documented and believed to be maintained throughout adulthood in active individuals.

Ethnic Differences

African American females tend to achieve higher peak bone mass than Caucasian females, with differences seen even during childhood and adolescence.

Nutrition

Calcium is essential for bone health. Calcium deficiencies can account for a 5-10% difference in peak bone mass and increase the risk for hip fracture later in life. Teenage girls in the US are less likely than boys to get enough calcium.

Lifestyle Behaviors

Smoking is linked to low bone density in adolescents and is associated with other unhealthy behaviors like alcohol use and a sedentary lifestyle. The negative impact of smoking is worsened by starting at a younger age, increasing risk for bone loss and fracture.
