Introduction

The INSTEON Motion Sensor is an indoor/outdoor motion sensor designed to control INSTEON-powered lights, turning them on and off in response to movement within its detection range. It features a photocell that allows for configuration to activate lights only during nighttime hours. Pairing the Motion Sensor with INSTEON software enables extensive automation possibilities.

The package includes the Motion Sensor unit, a 9V battery, a swivel mounting bracket, and two screws.

Operation

When Motion is Sensed

  1. Upon sensing motion, the Motion Sensor sends an ON command to up to 30 linked INSTEON responders and flashes its LED (unless it is daytime and the unit is in night-only mode).
  2. The sensor initiates an automatic countdown sequence.
  3. Any motion detected during the countdown resets the timer, allowing for the creation of 'occupied' and 'unoccupied' home modes.
  4. When the countdown expires, the sensor sends an OFF command to all linked responders (unless it is configured for 'on-only' mode).

Applications

Setup

Insert Battery

Using a small Phillips screwdriver, remove the screw and cover from the battery compartment located on the back of the unit. Insert the included 9V battery. Do not replace the compartment cover until instructed later in this guide. Allow 5 minutes for the circuit to stabilize. To confirm functionality, tap the set button a few times while observing the front of the unit. Each tap should cause a red LED behind the sensor lens to flash. Note that the LED may flash independently, indicating motion detection.

For US applications - Dual-Band Products and Access Point/Range Extender

To enable the Motion Sensor to control powerline-only devices, at least one INSTEON Access Point/Range Extender or other dual-band product must be installed in the home.

Make Motion Sensor a Controller

  1. Press and hold the Motion Sensor set button for 5 seconds. The Motion Sensor LED (behind the sensor lens) will begin blinking red.
  2. Turn the responder on (or set it to any desired state, such as 50% brightness or off).
  3. Press and hold the responder's set button until it emits a double-beep. The Motion Sensor LED will stop blinking.
  4. Test the connection by tapping the Motion Sensor set button. The responder should react appropriately. The Motion Sensor LED will blink red.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 for up to 32 responders that you wish the Motion Sensor to control.

Detecting Area

Placement Tips

Select a location that provides the required coverage while considering potential issues:

Mount Sensor

  1. Use the two included small screws to secure the swivel mounting bracket at your desired location.
  2. Slide the Motion Sensor onto the swivel mounting bracket (sliding it to the right) until you hear a click.
  3. Aim the Motion Sensor towards the area where you wish to detect motion.
  4. Test by walking through the area. Responders should activate when motion is sensed and turn off approximately 30 seconds after the last motion is detected.

Adjust Detection Area

  1. Tap the Motion Sensor set button until the linked responder(s) turn off.
  2. Within 10 seconds, walk completely out of the detection area.
  3. Wait 20 seconds.
  4. Walk back into and near your detection area. Your linked responders should turn on (the LED will flash upon initial motion, then once every 8 seconds during motion).
    • If the LED does not flash while you are moving within the desired detection area, re-aim the sensor (typically by pointing it upwards).
    • If the LED flashes while you are moving outside the detection area:
      • Aim the sensor to decrease its range (typically by pointing it downwards).
      • If aiming adjustments do not yield desired results, place Jumper 1 on both pins (refer to the 'Setup Modes' section).

Setup Modes (Optional)

Set Jumpers

Jumpers are small plastic connectors that act as switches. When installed across two pins, the switch is considered 'on'. When installed on a single pin or missing, the switch is 'off'.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Resolution
Sensor won't link to responders Move a dual-band INSTEON device (e.g., Access Point/Range Extender) closer to the Motion Sensor.
Sensor won't control linked responders
  • Ensure the LED flashes to confirm power and motion sensing.
  • Check if the sensor is in 'night-only' mode and it is currently 'daytime'.
  • Move a dual-band INSTEON device (e.g., Access Point/Range Extender) closer to the Motion Sensor.
  • Verify the sensor is not in its 1-minute countdown.
  • The sensor may not have received an acknowledgement from one or more linked devices. If this occurs repeatedly, move a dual-band INSTEON device closer to the sensor, or unlink devices that are no longer in use. If responders are unavailable, use software or perform a factory reset to remove unwanted links.
LED flashing rapidly after motion is detected
  • You may need to wait up to 8 seconds for the flash to appear.
  • The battery may need to be replaced.
LED not flashing upon motion
  • The unit may be in 'night-only' mode and light is detected.
  • The Motion Sensor may be aimed too low.
  • The temperature may be too high or too low, affecting the sensor's ability to distinguish between sensed motion and its surroundings. Refer to the 'Placement Tips' section.
Not sensing motion
  • The unit may be in 'night-only' mode and light is detected.
  • The Motion Sensor may be aimed too low.
  • The temperature may be too high or too low, affecting the sensor's ability to distinguish between sensed motion and its surroundings. Refer to the 'Placement Tips' section.
LED is double flashing upon motion Low battery warning: replace with a fresh battery.

Remove Motion Sensor as a Controller

  1. Press and hold the Motion Sensor set button for 5 seconds. The Motion Sensor LED (behind the sensor lens) will start blinking red.
  2. Press and hold the Motion Sensor set button for another 5 seconds. The Motion Sensor LED will continue blinking red.
  3. Press and hold the responder's set button until it beeps. The Motion Sensor LED will stop blinking.
  4. Test by tapping the Motion Sensor set button. The former responder should no longer respond.

Factory Reset

Return Motion Sensor to Factory Settings

  1. If possible, remove the Motion Sensor as a controller of all responders before proceeding.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Wait 15 seconds.
  4. While pressing the set button, reattach the battery. The LED will turn on after approximately 2 seconds.
  5. Continue pressing the set button for 5 seconds, then release it. The LED will turn off after approximately 2 seconds.

* If responders are not unlinked, they may continue to respond to the Motion Sensor even after a factory reset.
