Hyundai Ioniq Electric 2018 Quick Reference Guide

Features and Controls

This section details the primary controls and features of the Hyundai Ioniq Electric.

Smart Key

The Smart Key allows keyless entry and operation. Ensure the key is within approximately 28-40 inches (70-100 cm) of the door handle.

  • Lock/Unlock: Press the lock/unlock button on the driver's door handle. Press once to unlock the driver's door, twice to unlock all doors, and a third time to lock all doors.
  • Liftgate Unlock: Press and hold the liftgate unlock button on the key fob.
  • Panic: Press and hold the panic button on the key fob to activate the vehicle's alarm.

Removing the Mechanical Key: Press and hold the release button on the Smart Key to remove the mechanical key for manual door unlocking.

Power Button

Located on the center console, this button controls the vehicle's power states.

  • With the vehicle OFF and foot OFF the brake pedal, press the POWER button once for ACC (Accessory) mode.
  • Press twice for ON mode.
  • Press three times for OFF mode.
  • To start the vehicle, depress the brake pedal and press the POWER button while the gear is in P (Park).
  • To turn off the vehicle, press the POWER button while the gear is in P (Park).

Steering Wheel Adjustments

Adjust the steering wheel for optimal driving position.

  1. Pull the lever down.
  2. Set the angle and distance.
  3. Pull the lever up to lock the position.

Note: Do not adjust while driving.

Driver's Seat Adjustment

Manual and Power adjustments are available for the driver's seat.

  • Manual Adjustment: Controls for forward/backward movement, seat height, and seatback angle.
  • Power Adjustment: Controls for forward/backward movement, seat height, seatback angle, and lumbar support.

Headrest Adjustment

  • To Raise: Pull the headrest up.
  • To Lower: Press the lock button while pressing down on the headrest.

Seat Belt Adjustment (Front Seat)

Pull up to raise the seat belt anchor point.

Rear Seat Folding

Press the button and push down to lower the rear seats.

Seat Warmer (Front Seat)

Cycle through OFF, HIGH, MEDIUM, and LOW settings by pressing the button. Press and hold the button to turn it off immediately.

Driver Position Memory System

Store and recall preferred driver settings (seat position, mirror position, instrument panel illumination).

  • Storing: Adjust settings, press SET, then press memory button (1 or 2) within 4 seconds. The system beeps once upon SET press and twice upon memory button press.
  • Recalling: Press the desired memory button (1 or 2). The system beeps once.

Note: Gear position must be in P (Park) for storing and recalling.

High Voltage Battery Cooling Duct

Located at the bottom center of the rear seats. Ensure the air intake is not obstructed.

Driver's Main Controls

Located on the driver's door panel.

  • Folding Outer Side View Mirrors: Press to fold/unfold. Mirrors also fold/unfold automatically when locking/unlocking the vehicle with the smart key in AUTO position.
  • Outer Side View Mirror Adjustment: Use the L/R button and the directional switch.
  • Power Window Lock Button: Disables power window switches on rear passenger doors.
  • Door Lock: Locks/unlocks all doors.
  • Window Switches: Controls for front and rear power windows.

Liftgate Opening

Press the button to open the liftgate. The smart key must be within range. Press and hold the button to unlock the tailgate.

Child-Protector Rear Door Lock

Use a screwdriver to turn the mechanism to the lock or unlock position.

Charging Door

  • Opening: Push the charging door open button.
  • Emergency Opening: Open the tailgate and slightly pull the emergency cable.
  • Plug Unlock: Press to enable AUTO unlock of the plug when fully charged.
  • Charge Timer Activation: Press to turn off the scheduled charge timer.

Charge Indicator (on dash):

  • Green Light ON: Charging in progress.
  • Green Light OFF: Charging complete.
  • Green Light Blinking: Scheduled charge time programmed, but not currently charging.
  • Red Light Blinking: Charging malfunction. Visit a Hyundai dealership.

Homelink Wireless Control System

Allows programming of garage door openers and other devices. Refer to the Owner's Manual or www.homelink.com for detailed instructions.

Sunroof

  • Sliding: Press the switch backward past the detent to open completely, forward past the detent to close completely.
  • Tilting: Press the switch up to tilt, pull the switch forward to close.
  • The sunshade opens automatically with the sunroof.

Interior Lights

Controls for front map lamps, front door lamps, and front room lamps.

Headlights

  • Controls: Parking lights, Auto headlights, All lights Off, Headlight Delay (lights stay on for 15 seconds after exiting/locking; press lock button twice to turn off).
  • Turn Signals: Flashing signals for lane changes.
  • High Beams: Pull lever towards you to activate; push lever away to turn off.

Dynamic Bending Light (DBL)

DBL swivels and levels headlamps based on steering angle and vehicle speed to improve visibility. Turn DBL ON by turning the knob to AUTO when the vehicle is in ready mode. Turn OFF by turning the knob back.

Wipers and Washer

  • Wiper Control: Move switch down to OFF. Positions: INT (Intermittent), LO (Low speed), HI (High speed).
  • Intermittent Speed Adjustment: Use the speed control switch.
  • Windshield Washer: Pull lever gently towards you to spray washer fluid and activate wipers for 1-3 cycles.

Instrument Cluster and Indicators

The instrument cluster displays vital driving information and warnings.

Instrument Cluster Components

  1. ECO guide: Shows energy consumption and regenerative braking status.
  2. Speedometer: Displays vehicle speed.
  3. Warning and indicator lights: Alerts for various vehicle conditions.
  4. LCD display: Shows trip computer, navigation, and other information.
  5. Battery SOC (State of Charge) gauge: Indicates the high voltage battery's charge level.

Warnings and Indicators

Key indicators include:

  • Ready indicator: Illuminates when the vehicle is ready to drive.
  • Service warning light: Indicates a problem with the electric vehicle control system.
  • Power down warning light: Illuminates when vehicle power needs to be limited due to low battery.
  • Charging cable indicator: Red when a charge cable is connected.
  • High voltage battery low level warning light: Illuminates when the high voltage battery level is low.
  • Parking brake & brake fluid warning light: Indicates parking brake status or low brake fluid.
  • TPMS Malfunction / Low tire pressure warning light: Alerts to tire pressure issues.
  • Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS) indicator: Shows LKAS status.
  • Master warning light: General warning indicator.
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Indicator Light: Shows ESC status.
  • Air bag warning light: Indicates a potential issue with the airbag system.
  • Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) warning light: Indicates EPB status.

ECO Guide

Displays energy consumption and regenerative braking status.

  • POWER: Energy consumption during acceleration or uphill driving.
  • ECO: Energy consumption during normal driving.
  • CHARGE: Battery charging status via regenerative brakes (decelerating or downhill).

High Voltage Battery SOC (State of Charge) Gauge

Shows the charge level of the high voltage battery. 'L' indicates low charge, 'H' indicates full charge. When 2-3 bars remain near 'L', charging is required.

LCD Display Control and Modes

  • Control Buttons: MODE, MOVE, SELECT/RESET buttons adjust display content.
  • Display Modes: Trip Computer, Turn By Turn (TBT), Assist, User Settings, Warning messages.

Instrument Panel Illumination

Adjust brightness using the illumination control button.

Aux. Battery Saver+

Monitors and charges the 12V auxiliary battery from the high voltage battery if the level is low. Default setting is ON. Can be cancelled via User Settings. Warning: Do not touch high voltage electric wires during activation.

Electric Vehicle System Modes and Climate Control

Electric Vehicle System Modes

Access the EV menu via the EV icon on the AVN screen or the EV button on the HVAC panel.

  • Range: Displays estimated driving range based on current charge.
  • Nearby stations: Searches for electric charging stations.
  • Energy information: Displays battery status and electricity usage.
  • Drive mode settings: Configures Climate Control, Coast Energy Regeneration, and Maximum Speed Limit for different drive modes.
  • ECO driving: Shows ECO Level and driving history.
  • Charging/Climate settings: Schedule departure time for automatic charging and climate control.
  • EV settings: Adjust charging current, EV warnings, and drivable routes.

Climate Control

Controls temperature, fan speed, air intake, and air conditioning.

  • Temperature Control Knob: Adjusts cabin temperature.
  • Fan Speed Control Knob: Adjusts airflow intensity.
  • AUTO Button: Automatically controls fan speed, air intake, and AC.
  • OFF Button: Turns the system off.
  • Front Windshield Defrost Button: Clears fog/frost from the front windshield.
  • Rear Window Defrost Button: Clears fog/frost from the rear window.
  • Air Conditioning Button: Activates/deactivates the AC.
  • EV Menu Button: Accesses EV system settings.
  • Air Intake Control Button: Selects between outside (fresh) air or recirculated air.
  • Mode Selection Button: Directs airflow to different vents.
  • Driver Only Button: Focuses airflow primarily on the driver's seat.
  • HEAT Button: Activates the heater.

Defogging/Defrosting: Press the front windshield defrost button, set temperature to warmest, and fan speed to highest.

Automatic Heating/Air Conditioning: Press AUTO and set desired temperature.

Multimedia and Connectivity

Bluetooth® Pairing

Pair your mobile phone for hands-free calls and audio streaming. Vehicle must be parked to complete pairing. Follow on-screen prompts for passkey confirmation.

Wireless Cellular Phone Charging System

Located in front of the cup holders. Supports Qi-enabled phones. Ensure all doors are closed and the engine start/stop button is in ACC/ON/START position. Do not place metallic items or credit cards on the charger.

Steering Wheel Audio Control

  • VOLUME (+/-): Adjusts volume level.
  • SEEK / PRESET ( / ): Changes radio stations or tracks.
  • MODE: Changes the audio source.
  • MUTE ( ): Mutes the sound.

Bluetooth® Phone Call Operational Tips

For optimal call quality, keep Bluetooth volume low, avoid rough roads or open windows at high speeds, and ensure AC vents are not directed at the microphone.

Steering Wheel Bluetooth® Control

  • CALL Button: Places and transfers calls.
  • END Button: Ends calls or cancels functions.
  • Answering/Rejecting Calls: Press the CALL button.
  • Adjusting Ring Volume: Use the VOLUME buttons.
  • Transferring Call to Phone: Press and hold the CALL button.
  • Redial Last Call: Press and hold the CALL button for 2-3 seconds.

Voice Recognition

Activate by pressing the voice recognition button on the steering wheel. Use commands like "Call " or "Dial Number". HVAC blower speed is temporarily reduced when activated. Refer to the Owner's Manual for a full list of commands.

Blue Link Telematics System

Provides services like Navigation, SOS, and Roadside Assistance. Requires subscription. Enroll at MyHyundai.com or dealership. Press the button for voice-response menu or SOS emergency assistance. Download the MyHyundai with Blue Link app for features like Remote Climate Control.

Remote Climate Control: Allows remote activation of climate control and front defroster. Requires a Blue Link PIN. Remote Start operates for a limited time and has specific preconditions and termination conditions. Check local laws regarding remote start usage.

Warning: Do not remote start in enclosed environments due to carbon monoxide risk. Do not leave children or animals unattended.

Caution: Turn off windshield wipers before parking to prevent damage if remote start is activated in icy conditions.

Clock Adjustment

Adjust time and date via the SETUP button on the audio or navigation head unit. Options include 24-hour format and Daylight Saving Time.

Radio Mode

Tune to FM/AM/SiriusXM® stations, set preset memory buttons, and adjust sound settings via the touchscreen and TUNE knob.

Navigation

Features include destination search by address, POI, previous destinations, local search, and more. The map screen displays vehicle position, zoom controls, and route options.

  • Map Screen Features: Place, Home, Map, NAV volume, Zoom In/Out, Map Scale, Quick Menu, Destination, Waypoint, Save, POI, Vehicle Position Mark.
  • Destination Search: Address, Previous Destinations, Local Search (Google), POI Categories, Charging Stations, Restaurants, Emergency, Address Book, Phone Number, Freeway Exit/Entrance, Intersection, Coordinates.

AUX, USB and iPod® Port

Connect external audio devices to play through the vehicle's audio system.

Android Auto™

Requires Android OS 5.0+, compatible phone, and micro USB cable. Setup involves connecting the phone to the vehicle's USB port and following on-screen prompts. Uses Google Maps™ and Google Play Music™. Voice commands are handled by Google Assistant™.

Apple CarPlay™

Requires iPhone 5 or above, latest iOS, and Apple Lightning cable. Setup involves connecting the iPhone to the vehicle's USB port and enabling CarPlay in phone settings. Uses Apple Maps and Apple Music. Voice commands are handled by Siri®.

Driving Features

Electric Vehicle Components

  • On-Board Charger (OBC): Charges the high voltage battery from external sources.
  • EPCU (Inverter + LDC): Converts DC to AC for the motor and AC to DC for charging. LDC converts high voltage to 12V.
  • Motor: Drives the vehicle using electrical energy.
  • Reduction Gear: Delivers motor torque to the tires.
  • High Voltage Battery: Stores and supplies power for EV operation.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

  • Low Tire Pressure Indicator: Illuminates when one or more tires are significantly under-inflated.
  • TPMS Malfunction Indicator: Blinks then stays illuminated if the TPMS has a malfunction.
  • Tire pressure specifications are on the driver's side center pillar.

Automatic with Push Button Drive Selector

Select gears (P, R, D, N) by pressing the shift buttons. Always depress the brake pedal while shifting.

Virtual Engine Sound System (VESS)

Generates engine sound at low speeds for pedestrian safety. An additional warning sound is heard when shifting to Reverse.

Regenerative Brake Level Control Paddles

Adjust regenerative braking intensity (0 to 3) using the left paddle (increase) and right paddle (decrease). Paddles do not operate when both are pulled simultaneously or when Cruise Control is active.

Electronic Parking Brake (EPB)

  • Applying: Stop the vehicle, then pull up the EPB switch.
  • Releasing: Press the EPB switch while depressing the brake pedal.
  • Automatic Releasing: Occurs when shifting out of P or N after depressing the brake pedal.
  • Emergency Braking: Possible by pulling up and holding the EPB switch.

Auto Hold

Keeps the vehicle stopped after braking, even when the brake pedal is released. The brakes release automatically when the accelerator pedal is depressed.

  • Activation: Press the AUTO HOLD switch (indicator turns WHITE). Stop the vehicle with the brake pedal (indicator turns GREEN).
  • Cancellation: Press the AUTO HOLD switch again (indicator turns WHITE).

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

Helps maintain vehicle control under adverse conditions. ESC is ON by default. Traction Control can be turned off by a short press of the ESC OFF button. Both Traction and Stability Control can be turned off by pressing the ESC OFF button for more than 3 seconds.

Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)

Detects imminent collisions with vehicles or pedestrians and applies emergency braking. Activate via User Settings > Driving Assist > Autonomous Emergency Braking.

Rear View Camera

Displays the area behind the vehicle when the gear is selected to R (Reverse).

Drive Mode Integrated Control System

Select drive modes (ECO, SPORT) for different driving preferences. The system defaults to NORMAL mode upon restart (except ECO mode).

  • Normal Mode: Balanced performance and efficiency.
  • ECO Mode: Prioritizes fuel efficiency by reducing acceleration and climate control performance.
  • Sport Mode: Offers a sportier feel with potentially reduced fuel efficiency.

Driving Suggestions for Fuel Economy: Drive smoothly, accelerate moderately, maintain speed with traffic, and keep a safe following distance.

Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)

Assists steering to keep the vehicle within lane markers at speeds between 40-110 mph. Activate/deactivate using the LKAS switch. Limitations apply in poor lane marking conditions, fog, or sharp bends.

Blind Spot Detection System (BSD)

Monitors the rear and side areas of the vehicle using radar sensors. Alerts the driver to vehicles in blind spots or approaching from the sides when in reverse. Activates above 20 mph.

Cruise Control / Smart Cruise Control

  • Cruise Control (CC): Maintains a set speed. Buttons: On/Off, Resume/Increase speed, Set/Decrease speed, Cancel.
  • Smart Cruise Control (SCC): Maintains set speed and vehicle-to-vehicle distance. Use the distance setting button to adjust following distance (4 levels).

Electric Vehicle (Tips)

Maximize fuel economy by maintaining tire pressure, rolling windows up, proper vehicle maintenance, turning off AC when not needed, setting headlights to AUTO/OFF, using the DRIVER ONLY button, and driving in ECO mode.
