What's in the Box

Basic Crochet Stitches

1. Slip Knot (Abbreviated 'st')

Every piece of crochet chain starts with a slip knot. Loop the yarn around two fingers (leaving a tail) and pull the tail halfway through the loop. Insert the crochet hook into the second loop and gently pull the loop taut onto the crochet hook.

Step 1: Hands holding yarn, looping it around two fingers.
Step 2: Crochet hook inserting into the loop on fingers.
Step 3: Pulling yarn through the loop to create the knot on the hook.

2. Chain Stitch (Abbreviated 'ch')

The chain stitch is the basis for all crochet which is also called a foundation chain.

Step 1: Yarn over hook.
Step 2: Pull yarn through the loop on the hook.
Step 3: A chain stitch is formed.

3. Slip Stitch (Abbreviated 'sl st')

The slip stitch is the flattest or smallest of all crochet stitches. You can use this stitch by slip-stitching the ends of a foundation chain to form a ring.

Step 1: Insert hook into the next stitch.
Step 2: Yarn over hook and pull through the stitch and the loop on the hook.
Step 3: A slip stitch is formed.

4. Single Crochet (Abbreviated 'sc')

The single crochet is the most fundamental of all stitches. Gather the yarn with your crochet hook and draw up the loop through the stitch. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through two loops, leaving one loop on the hook.

Step 1: Insert hook into the stitch.
Step 2: Yarn over hook and pull up a loop.
Step 3: Yarn over hook again and pull through both loops on the hook.

5. Increase (Abbreviated 'inc')

You can increase stitches by adding a stitch at the beginning of the row. For example, make 2 single crochet stitches in the same knot.

Step 1: Work a single crochet into the first stitch.
Step 2: Work another single crochet into the same stitch.
Step 3: Two stitches are now in the same starting point.

6. Front Loop Only (Abbreviated 'flor')

Work with the single loop stitch closest to your body.

Image shows hook inserting into only the front loop of a stitch.

7. Magic Ring

A magic ring is an adjustable starting round used for crochet amigurumi patterns, granny squares and other patterns that work in crochet rounds. Form a loop with your yarn. You will need to loop the yarn around your fingers, insert the hook through the loop. Slide the crochet hook under right piece of yarn from right to left, use the hook tip to grab onto a left yarn, pull the yarn through the ring, make a chain stitch. Put your first row of stitches into the ring. For example, make 6 single crochet (sc), pull yarn ends. Hold the working end of the yarn taut while gently pulling down on the tail end. As you do this, the stitches should close together at the center, completing your magic ring. Finally, slip stitch into the first stitch. To close this round and start the remainder of your pattern, make a slip stitch into the first stitch of your ring, and proceed to the next round.

Step 1: Yarn formed into a loop around fingers.
Step 2: Hook inserted into the loop to grab yarn.
Step 3: Pulling yarn through the loop to create a chain.
Step 4: First single crochet stitch being made into the ring.
Step 5: Multiple stitches worked into the ring.
Step 6: Pulling the tail end to close the ring.
Step 7: Stitches gathered at the center of the closed ring.
Step 8: Slip stitch to join the round.
Step 9: Slip stitch to start the next round.
Step 10: A completed magic ring with stitches.
Step 11: Pulling the yarn tail to tighten the center.
Step 12: A small, tight circle formed.

8. Fasten Off (Abbreviated 'F/O')

Fasten off by pulling the yarn through the end stitch and pulling it taut. Cut off.

Step 1: Yarn pulled through the last loop on the hook.
Step 2: Yarn tail cut.
Step 3: A finished piece with the yarn fastened off.

9. Round (Abbreviated 'Rd')

This continues the chain stitches into a circle. Each round starts with a chain stitch and ends with a slip stitch.

General description of how rounds are constructed in crochet.

10. Sewing

Generally used for the connection of 2 parts. The plastic needle strap yarns are threaded in turn through the knots where the two parts need to be connected.

Step 1: Two crocheted pieces aligned for sewing.
Step 2: Yarn threaded through a plastic needle.
Step 3: Sewing stitches being made to join the pieces.

If details need to be stitched onto the finished product (such as mouth, eyes, etc.), use the plastic needle and thread to create small stitches to represent facial features etc.

Step 1: Plastic needle with yarn for embroidery.
Step 2: Small stitches being made to create features.
Step 3: Embroidered features on a crochet piece.

11. Weaving In/Invisible Close

Cut the yarn, leaving a long yarn end. Draw the end through the final loop on the hook and thread it onto a yarn needle. Weave your needle through the front loops only on the last round and pull tight. Weave remaining yarn into your piece.

Step 1: Yarn end threaded through a yarn needle.
Step 2: Needle weaving through front loops of the last round.
Step 3: Yarn pulled tight to close the gap.
Step 4: Remaining yarn tail being woven into the stitches.

Please noted that all yarns needs to be hidden behind the stitch.
