Basic Crochet Stitch Diagram
1. Stitch (Abbreviated 'st')
A slip knot is the start of every crochet chain. To make one, loop the yarn around two fingers, leaving a tail. Pull the tail halfway through the loop. Insert the crochet hook into the second loop and gently pull the loop taut onto the hook.
2. Chain Stitch (Abbreviated 'ch')
The chain stitch is the foundation for all crochet work.
3. Slip Stitch (Abbreviated 'sl st')
The slip stitch is the smallest crochet stitch. It can be used to join the ends of a foundation chain to form a ring.
4. Single Crochet (Abbreviated 'sc')
Gather the yarn with your crochet hook and draw up a loop through the stitch. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through two loops, leaving one loop on the hook.
5. Increase (Abbreviated 'inc')
To increase stitches, work two single crochets into the same stitch.
6. Decrease (Abbreviated 'dec')
To decrease stitches, work a half single crochet in the next stitch (two loops on hook), then work another half single crochet in the following stitch (three loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through all three loops.
7. Magic Ring
A magic ring is an adjustable starting round used for amigurumi and other circular patterns. Form a loop with your yarn. Insert the hook through the loop, grab the yarn with the hook, and pull it through the ring. Make a chain stitch. Work your first row of stitches into the ring (e.g., 6 sc). Pull the yarn tail to close the ring. Slip stitch into the first stitch to complete the round.
8. Round (Abbreviated 'Rd')
Each round typically starts with a chain stitch and ends with a slip stitch to join the circle.
9. Sewing
Used to connect two parts. Thread yarn onto the plastic needle and weave it through the stitches of both pieces to join them.
10. Fasten Off (Abbreviated 'F/O')
Pull the yarn through the last loop on the hook and pull taut. Cut the yarn.
11. Weaving In/Invisible Close
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw the tail through the final loop on the hook and thread it onto a yarn needle. Weave the needle through the front loops of the last round and pull tight to close. Weave in the remaining yarn end.
