Tools Required for Installation

Installation will require the following tools:

*Only required if vehicle equipped with orange tab on quick disconnect fitting.

Installation Procedure

Step 1: Disconnect Temperature Sensor Harness

Action: Unplug the temperature sensor harness.

(Visual Aid: Figure A illustrates unplugging the temperature sensor harness from its connection point on the engine intake.)

Step 2: Loosen Intake Tube Clamps

Action: Loosen the two clamps connecting the intake tube to the turbo inlet tubes.

Step 3: Unclip Coolant Line

Action: Unclip the coolant line from the intake tube.

Step 4: Remove Factory Air Box Components

Action: Unclip the top of the factory air box. Remove the factory intake tube, air filter, and the top of the air box from the vehicle.

(Visual Aid: Figure B shows multiple connection points on the intake tube and air box being loosened or unclipped.)

Step 5: Remove Front Scoop Fasteners

Action: Remove the two plastic rivets securing the front scoop of the housing.

Step 6: Unclip Wire Harness

Action: Unclip the wire harness from the back of the air box.

Step 7: Remove Air Box Securing Screw

Action: Remove the screw securing the air box to the fender, then pull the factory air box out of the truck. This screw will be reused to secure the aFe POWER housing.

(Visual Aid: Figure C shows the locations of plastic rivets and a screw securing the factory air box.)

Step 8: Locate Driver's Side Turbo Inlet Tube

Action: Locate the factory plastic tube feeding the driver's side turbo inlet. This is the connection closer to the turbo.

(Visual Aid: Figure D shows the factory intake tube assembly with labels pointing to the vent fitting on the valve cover, vent fitting on the tube, and turbo inlets on the driver and passenger sides.)

Step 9: Identify Valve Cover Vent Tube

Action: Locate the valve cover vent tube that feeds into the driver's side turbo inlet (the connection closer to the turbo). It is not necessary to remove the engine cover.

Step 10: Check Quick Disconnect Fitting Tab Color

Action: Check the color of the locking tab on the quick disconnect fitting. If the locking tab is orange, proceed to steps 11 and 12. If the locking tab is blue or grey, proceed to step 13.

(Visual Aid: Figure E shows a close-up of the vent fitting with a locking tab.)

Step 11: Use Quick Disconnect Tool for Orange Tab

Action: If the locking tab of the quick disconnect fitting is orange, use a 5/8" quick disconnect tool to remove it. These tools are commonly used on AC and fuel lines.

(Visual Aid: Figure F shows the orange locking tab on the quick disconnect fitting, indicating the need for a specific tool.)

Step 12: Disconnect Fitting with Orange Tab

Action: For the fitting with the orange locking tab, slide the 5/8" quick disconnect tool over the fitting and push it inside. Rotate it and pull on the fitting simultaneously.

(Visual Aid: Figure G illustrates using the 5/8" quick disconnect tool on the fitting with the orange locking tab.)

Step 13: Disconnect Fitting with Grey or Blue Tab

Action: If the locking tab is grey or blue, apply pressure against the exposed tail and pull the vent fitting off the turbo inlet tube. It is not necessary to disconnect at the valve cover end. Be careful not to damage the sensor and wire harness on this vent tube.

(Visual Aid: Figure H shows a hand applying pressure to a tab to disconnect the vent fitting from the turbo inlet tube.)

Step 14: Insert Vent Fitting with Slash Cut

Action: Insert the vent fitting with the slash cut facing the turbo. It should not be a loose fit. It is direction dependent and must not rotate once installed.

(Visual Aid: Figure I shows the vent fitting being inserted into the aFe POWER intake tube, with an arrow indicating the slash cut facing the turbo inlet.)

Step 15: Reconnect Vent Fitting

Action: Reconnect the vent fitting. It will snap over without needing to release the plastic clip. Pull up slightly to confirm installation.

Step 16: Complete Vent Tube Installation

Action: Installation of the vent tube is complete. Any diagnostic trouble codes can be cleared with a code reader or by disconnecting the battery (note: disconnecting the battery will reset radio presets). If removal of the vent insert is required, use internal snap ring pliers.

(Visual Aid: Figure J shows the vent fitting being reconnected to the intake tube.)

Step 17: Install Christmas Tree Clips

Action: Install the Christmas tree clips into the hole below the filter opening.

Step 18: Transfer Factory Grommet and Sleeve

Action: Transfer the factory grommet and sleeve from the factory air box to the aFe POWER housing.

(Visual Aid: Figure K shows the locations for installing the Christmas tree clips and transferring the grommet/sleeve.)

Step 19: Install aFe POWER Housing

Action: Install the aFe POWER housing into the truck by pushing it into the factory mounting grommets.

Step 20: Secure Housing with Factory Screw

Action: Secure the housing using the factory screw that was removed in step 7.

Step 21: Secure Housing Front Clips

Action: Secure the front of the housing with the two provided plastic retainer clips.

(Visual Aid: Figure L shows the aFe POWER housing being installed and secured with a screw and retainer clips.)

Step 22: Install Air Filter

Action: Install the air filter into the aFe Power housing by firmly pushing it until the air filter tabs lock into place. Install the clamp on the filter, but do not tighten at this time.

(Visual Aid: Figure M shows the air filter being installed into the aFe POWER housing.)

Step 23: Install Grommet and Orient Sensor

Action: Install the grommet into the hole on the aFe POWER tube. Press in the plastic fitting and orient it correctly to ensure the temperature sensor is clocked properly.

Step 24: Transfer and Secure Temperature Sensor

Action: Remove the temperature sensor from the factory intake tube. Transfer it to the fitting onto the aFe POWER intake tube. Turn it clockwise until the tab locks it into place.

(Visual Aid: Figure N shows the grommet being installed and the temperature sensor being transferred and secured.)

Step 25: Install Bellow Coupling on Driver Side

Action: Install the bellow coupling onto the driver side turbo inlet. Place the larger clamps on it but do not tighten yet.

Step 26: Install Reducer Coupling on Passenger Side

Action: Install the reducer coupling on the other turbo inlet and place the clamps on it but do not tighten at this time.

(Visual Aid: Figure O shows the bellow and reducer couplings being installed onto the turbo inlets.)

Step 27: Connect Intake Tube to Couplings

Action: Install the aFe POWER intake tube into the filter flange then connect it to the two couplings.

Step 28: Align Tube and Tighten Clamps

Action: Align the tube and air filter, then tighten all clamps securely.

(Visual Aid: Figure P shows the aFe POWER intake tube connected to the filter and couplings, ready for final tightening.)

Step 29: Reconnect Temperature Sensor Harness

Action: Reconnect the temperature sensor harness.

Step 30: Secure Harness Clip

Action: Secure the harness clip into the hole on the housing.

(Visual Aid: Figure Q shows the temperature sensor harness being reconnected and secured.)

Step 31: Verify Installation

Action: Verify all clamps and connections are secured. Your installation is now complete. Thank you for choosing aFe POWER!

(Visual Aid: Figure R shows the completed installation of the aFe POWER cold air intake system in the engine bay.)
