Dyson Airblade Wash+Dry: ADA Guidelines and Technical Specifications

This document outlines the Accessibility Design Guidelines (ADA) and technical specifications for the Dyson Airblade Wash+Dry hand dryer models WD04, WD05, and WD06.

Mobility Access within Washroom Facilities

The Dyson Airblade Wash+Dry hand dryer, when installed as a sensor-operated dual-use sink and hand drying unit, must adhere to lavatory sink knee and toe clearance requirements. It must be positioned on an accessible route and should not obstruct required clear areas for other fixtures, such as door swings or waste receptacles. The unit's placement must also meet reach range and space requirements. An accessible restroom typically includes an accessible entrance, turning space, and at least one of each type of accessible dispenser and fixture. The Airblade WD04 Short Wash+Dry is considered a lavatory sink-mounted unit and must meet these standards.

Clear Floor Ground Space

Accessibility codes often consider users in wheelchairs, influencing reach range requirements. Due to the Dyson Airblade Wash+Dry's front-approach design, side-approach standards do not apply. A clear area of at least 30 inches wide by 48 inches long is required in front of the unit. This area may overlap circulation paths but should not encroach upon other essential accessible areas, such as a lavatory sink in multi-user restrooms. In single-use restrooms, accessible areas may overlap as they are used by only one person at a time.

WD04 Short Wash+Dry Unit

The WD04 Short Wash+Dry unit's operable area is approximately 37 inches above the finished floor, which is within the acceptable accessible usability range. Hand drying occurs about 2 inches below the air edge. The Dyson Technical Specification recommends 4 inches from the floor for air intake, which places the motor bucket within a non-compliant range. Maintaining a 9-inch toe clearance is recommended for all installations, and the power cord should be kept clear of this area.

WD05 Long Wash+Dry Unit

The WD05 Long Wash+Dry unit's additional 6 inches in height may place its operable area above the 40-inch finished floor accessible range when mounted on a standard 34-inch high lavatory top surface, potentially making it non-compliant. While the long unit might be suitable in specific situations, it is recommended to install a compliant short unit alongside one or more long units.

WD06 Wall Wash+Dry Unit

The WD06 Wall Wash+Dry unit can be compliant if the sink stem is mounted at 40 inches above the finished floor. The reach range would typically fall within the acceptable 20-inch distance for standard accessible sink installations. Design professionals should verify general compliance in such cases. Knee and toe clearances must always be maintained.

Dyson Airblade WD04 Short Tap and WD06 Wall Tap Accessible Installation Matrix

Requirement Yes/No Compliant
Required front approach 30" x 48" clear floor clearance? Yes Yes
Reach range exceeds 40" maximum height above finished floor surface? No Yes
Hand dryer mounted at a height considered a protruding object? No Yes
Front edge projects more than 4" into path of travel when properly mounted? No Yes
Operable part exceeds forward 20" reach range? No Yes
Unit provides proper 9" toe clearance? Yes Yes

Conclusion

Based on the review, the Dyson Airblade WD04 Short Wash+Dry and WD06 Wall Wash+Dry, when mounted at the correct height in a standard restroom lavatory installation, are compliant. Ensuring a clear front approach area without overlapping accessible areas is crucial for compliance.

Sink Specification

The Dyson Airblade Wash+Dry is compatible with most sink types. Avoid sinks with embedded plugs or those with swiveling or elevating plugs. Dyson engineers tested various sink types to evaluate user experience. For recommended sinks, consult the pre-installation guide on the Dyson website. Avoid sinks with flat bases around the drain hole (within a 25/16" or 60mm radius), and those with sloping back and front wall transitions. Highly polished surfaces like chrome should be avoided; porcelain or brushed metal is preferred. If multiple taps are installed side-by-side, ensure a minimum of 227/8" (580mm) spacing between tap centers.

Standard Warranty

5 year parts, 5 year limited labor warranty.
