Turntable Layout
The Victrola Montauk VM-135 features a well-organized layout for easy operation. Below is a description of the key components:
Main Unit Components:
- 1. 45 RPM Adaptor: Used for playing 45 RPM records with large center holes.
- 2. Lift Lever: Raises and lowers the tone arm.
- 3. Auto Stop Control Switch: Controls whether the turntable stops automatically at the end of a record.
- 4. Speed Selection Switch: Allows selection of playback speeds (33, 45, 78 RPM).
- 5. Tone Arm: Holds the stylus and plays the record.
- 6. Tone Arm Lock: Secures the tone arm when not in use.
- 7. Phono Stylus Cartridge: The component that reads the grooves on the record.
- 8. Power/Volume Knob: Turns the unit on/off and adjusts the volume.
- 9. Power LED Light Indicator: Shows the power status of the unit.
- 10. Turntable Shaft: The spindle on which the record platter sits.
- 11. Turntable Platter: The rotating disc where the record is placed.
- 12. Removable Dust Cover: Protects the turntable from dust.
- 13. Hinge: Connects the dust cover to the main unit.
- 14. Power Adaptor Jack: Port for connecting the AC/DC power adapter.
- 15. External Speaker Jacks: Connectors for external speakers.
- 16. Aux In Jack: Input for connecting external audio devices via a 3.5mm cable.
External Speaker Components:
- 17. External Speakers: The included wooden speakers.
- 18. Speaker Cable at External Speaker: The cable connecting the speaker to the main unit.
Turntable Operation
Setup
An AC/DC adaptor (12V DC 2.0A) is included for powering the unit. Connect the included wooden speakers using the color-coded cables (red to red, white to white) to the corresponding jacks on the back of the unit.
Firmly insert the DC plug of the adapter into the DC IN jack on the unit. Plug the AC adapter into a power outlet (220-240V AC ~ 50 Hz). Turn on the unit using the POWER/VOLUME knob. The Power LED Light Indicator will illuminate.
Note: To prevent feedback or 'Larsen effect' noise, place speakers at least 60 cm (approx. 2 feet) away from the turntable. Keep the dust cover open when playing records at higher volumes.
Listening to a Record
- Raise the dust cover.
- Turn on the unit using the POWER/VOLUME knob. The Power LED Light Indicator will turn RED.
- Place a record on the turntable platter and set the Speed Selection Switch (4) to match the record's speed (33, 45, or 78 RPM).
- For 45 RPM singles or records with large center holes, use the 45 RPM adaptor.
- Remove the protective cover from the stylus cartridge.
- Unlock the tone arm lock. Push the Lift Lever (2) backward to gently raise the tone arm.
- Carefully move the tone arm to the desired position over the record. The turntable platter will begin to rotate if the Auto Stop Control Switch (3) is set to ON.
- Gently lower the tone arm onto the record by pushing the Lift Lever (2) forward. The vinyl record will begin to play.
If the Auto Stop Control Switch (3) is ON, the record will stop automatically when finished. If it is OFF, you will need to manually lift the tone arm using the Lift Lever (2) and return it to the rest, then turn off the power.
Note on Auto Stop: The AUTO STOP function works with most 33RPM records. For some vinyl records, it may stop before the end or not stop at all. If a record stops prematurely, set the AUTO STOP switch to OFF. You will then need to stop the turntable manually. AUTO STOP may engage before the end of a record depending on its length; do not rely solely on this feature to end playback.
Note on Standby: The unit features automatic standby for power saving (CE regulation). If no audio signal is detected (from record or Bluetooth) for approximately 15 minutes, the unit will enter standby mode. To reactivate, either move the tone arm to start playing a record or turn the POWER/VOLUME knob OFF and then ON again.
Stylus Replacement
Replacing the stylus is a straightforward process:
Removing the Stylus:
- Place fingers at the tip of the stylus and push down towards direction "A" (WARNING: Applying excessive force may damage or break the cartridge).
- Pull the stylus out towards direction "B".
Installing the Stylus:
Use a replacement stylus (e.g., # ITNP-S1).
- Hold the tip of the new stylus and insert the other edge by pressing towards direction "C".
- Push the stylus up towards direction "D" until it locks into place at the tip.
CAUTION: Do not bend or force the stylus into the cartridge. Avoid touching the stylus needle to prevent injury. Always turn off the unit's power before replacing the stylus. Keep styluses out of reach of children.
Note: The stylus typically lasts about 300 hours of normal use. Replace it when sound quality degrades. 78 RPM records may cause faster stylus wear.
Bluetooth Operation
Connect external devices like smartphones or tablets wirelessly via Bluetooth.
- Turn on the unit using the POWER/VOLUME knob.
- When the turntable is on and the tone arm is on its rest, Bluetooth mode activates automatically and enters pairing mode (LED light flashes).
- For the first connection, you will need to pair your Bluetooth device with the turntable.
- Turn ON the Bluetooth setting on your external device. Wait a moment, then search for the Bluetooth pairing name “Victrola Montauk". If prompted for a password, enter "0000".
- Select “Victrola Montauk” to connect. The LED light will stop flashing once connected.
- You are now connected to your external device via Bluetooth.
- Use the POWER/VOLUME knob to adjust the sound level, and also adjust the volume on your external audio device.
Aux-in Operation
Connect external audio devices using a 3.5mm stereo cable (not included).
- Connect the external audio device to the AUX IN socket on the back of the unit using a 3.5mm stereo cable.
- Turn on the unit and adjust the volume to an appropriate level using the POWER/VOLUME knob.
- Use the POWER/VOLUME knob to adjust the overall volume. Control playback and volume on the external audio device itself.
Note: When an AUX cable is connected, the unit defaults to AUX mode. To listen to records or Bluetooth audio, unplug the AUX cable.
