Introduction
This document provides essential instructions for the safe and effective operation of the Fellowes P-48C Cross-Cut Shredder. Please read these instructions carefully before using the shredder.
Shredder Overview
The Fellowes P-48C shredder features the following components:
- Handle: For carrying the shredder head.
- Shredder head: Contains the cutting mechanism.
- Sheet capacity gauge: Indicates the maximum number of sheets that can be fed.
- LED Lights:
- Overheated (red) indicator.
- Standby (green) indicator.
- Window: Allows viewing of the bin level.
- Bin: Collects shredded material.
- Easy emptying: Feature for convenient bin removal.
- Paper/credit card entry: Slot for feeding documents and cards.
- Disconnect power switch: Located on the back of the shredder head.
- Safety lock: Prevents accidental operation.
- Control switch: With settings for Auto-On (I), Off (0), and Reverse (R).

*Note: Performance may be reduced with A4 (70g) paper at voltages other than 220-240v, heavier paper, or higher humidity.
Recommended daily usage rates: 10-20 paper passes; 10 cards.
Important Safety Instructions
WARNING:
- Keep away from children and pets. Keep hands away from the paper entry. Always unplug the shredder or set the safety lock when not in use.
- Keep foreign objects such as gloves, jewelry, clothing, and hair away from shredder openings. If an object enters the top opening, switch to Reverse (R) to back out the object.
- Never use aerosol, petroleum-based, or other flammable products on or near the shredder. Do not use canned air on the shredder.
- Do not use the shredder if it is damaged or defective. Do not open the shredder head. Do not place the shredder near or over a heat or water source.
- Feed a maximum of 8 sheets per pass to avoid jams.
CAUTION:
- Avoid touching exposed blades under the Cross-Cut shredder head.
- The socket-outlet shall be installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible.
Operation
To operate the shredder, the disconnect power switch must be in the ON (I) position. It is recommended to insert a waste bag (Fellowes #36052) for easy disposal.
Note: The shredder runs briefly after each pass to clear the entry. Continuous operation beyond 3-5 minutes will trigger a 15-minute cool-down period.
Shredding Paper
To shred paper:
- Check the paper amount to ensure it does not exceed the capacity.
- Set the control switch to Auto-On (I).
- Feed the paper into the paper entry and release.

Shredding Credit Cards
To shred credit cards:
- Set the control switch to Auto-On (I).
- Hold the credit card at its edge.
- Feed the card into the center of the paper entry and release.

Safety Lock
The safety lock prevents accidental operation. To set the lock:
- Wait for shredding to stop.
- Push the black button down.
- Slide the button towards the front of the shredder.
To unlock:
- Push the black button down.
- Slide the button toward the back of the shredder.
For greater safety, always unplug the shredder after use.
Troubleshooting
Paper Jam
If a paper jam occurs:
- Set the control switch to Off (0) and unplug the shredder.
- Remove the shredder head and empty the bin.
- Replace the shredder head.
- Follow one or more of the following procedures:
- Set the control switch to Reverse (R) for 2-3 seconds.
- Alternate slowly between Forward and Reverse.
- Gently pull any uncut paper from the paper entry.
- Plug in the shredder and set the control switch to Auto-On (I) to test.
Shredder Doesn't Start
If the shredder does not start:
- Make sure the shredder head is correctly seated on the basket.
- Wait 15 minutes for the motor to cool down if it has been used continuously.
- Remove and empty the bin if it is full.
- Ensure the safety lock is in the unlock position.
Maintenance
Run the shredder regularly in reverse for one minute to help maintain the cutting blades.
Oiling Procedure:
Follow this procedure and repeat twice:
- Set the control switch to Off (0) and unplug the shredder.
- Apply shredder oil across the entry slot.
- Plug in the shredder and set the control switch to Auto-On (I).
- Shred one sheet of paper.
- Set the control switch to Reverse (R) for 2-3 seconds.

Lubricate the shredder when the bin is full, or immediately if:
- Capacity decreases.
- The motor sounds different.
- The shredder stops running.
CAUTION: Only use a non-aerosol vegetable oil in a long nozzle container.
Warranty
Fellowes, Inc. provides a limited warranty for this machine. The cutting blades are warranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship for 3 years from the date of original purchase. All other parts are warranted for 2 years from the date of original purchase. If a part is found defective during the warranty period, Fellowes will, at its option, repair or replace the defective part at no charge. This warranty does not cover damage resulting from abuse, mishandling, or unauthorized repair. Any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose is limited to the duration of the express warranty periods stated above. Fellowes is not liable for any consequential or incidental damages.
This warranty grants specific legal rights, and its terms are valid worldwide, subject to local legal requirements.
