Safety Instructions
⚠️ Important Safety Instructions — Read Before Using!
- Keep away from children and pets. Keep hands away from paper entry. Always set to off or unplug when not in use.
- Keep foreign objects (gloves, jewelry, clothing, hair, etc.) away from shredder openings. If an object enters the top opening, switch to Reverse [⬅️] to back out the object.
- Never use aerosol products, petroleum-based lubricants, or other flammable products on or near the shredder. Do not use canned air on the shredder.
- Do not use if damaged or defective. Do not disassemble the shredder. Do not place near or over a heat source or water.
- This shredder has a Disconnect Power Switch (G) that must be in the ON [I] position to operate. In case of emergency, move the switch to OFF [O] position. This action will stop the shredder immediately.
- Avoid touching exposed cutting blades under the shredder head.
- Rotate the CD flap entry for shredding CDs/cards. Keep fingers away from the CD hole. The Jam Proof System is disabled when the flap is in the CD position.
- Do not put foreign objects in the paper entry.
- The grounded socket-outlet shall be installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible.
Basic Setup and Shredding Operation
Caster Installation
Follow these 5 steps to install the casters for mobility.
(Diagrams show steps 1-5 for attaching casters)
Shredding Paper or CDs/Cards
- Plug in the shredder and set the disconnect power switch (G) to the ON [I] position.
- Press the On/Off control (Q) [?] to activate the shredder. A blue light indicates activation.
- Feed paper straight into the paper entry (B) [?] and release.
- To shred CDs or cards, rotate the CD/Card flap (D) [?] into place.
- Hold a CD/card at the edge and feed it into the CD/Card flap entry and release.
- When finished shredding, set the disconnect power switch (G) [?] to OFF [O].
Jam Proof System Operation
Eliminates frustrating jams by preventing overloads and powering through misfed paper.
Setup and Testing
- Feed paper into the paper entry (B) [?] and release.
- If too many sheets are fed, the sheet capacity indicator (N) [?] will light up red, and the shredder will not accept paper. Reduce the sheet quantity and refeed.
- The shredder will accept fewer sheets if the indicator (N) [?] is below the yellow level. You can add more sheets without fear of jamming.
- Increase the number of sheets being fed up to the top yellow light on the indicator (N) [?] to maximize your productivity.
Misfed Paper
- If paper is misfed and the shredder stops, all indicator lights will illuminate, and the shredder will pause for 3-6 seconds.
- The automatic correcting action will power through the misfed paper. Continue shredding; do not add more paper during this flashing period.
- If the shredder cannot power through the misfeed, it will reverse the paper out for easy removal.
- If the "Remove paper" indicator (L) [?❌] is illuminated, press the Reverse control (P) [⬅️] and remove the paper.
- Reduce the paper quantity to an acceptable amount and refeed into the paper entry (B) [?].
SafeSense® Technology Operation
Stops shredder immediately when hands are too close to the paper entry.
Setup and Testing
- Turn the shredder ON [I] using the On/Off control (Q) [?] to activate SafeSense®.
- Touch the test area and look for the SafeSense® indicator (M) [?] to illuminate.
- SafeSense® is now active and working properly.
Disabling the Feature
- To disable the system, press and hold the Auto correcting button (O) [?] and the Reverse control (P) [⬅️] key simultaneously.
- Once disabled, the blue Auto light will no longer be illuminated. To re-engage, repeat step 1.
- Shredding can continue with the system disabled; however, a paper jam may occur with too many sheets, and the "Remove Paper" indicator (L) [?❌] will illuminate.
- If a jam occurs, press and hold the Forward control (R) [➡️] key until the document is completely through the shredder.
- If the jam is not cleared, press the Reverse control (P) [⬅️] briefly. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the paper is shredded.
- If steps 4 and 5 do not clear the jam, reverse the paper all the way out, remove several sheets, and refeed.
Basic Product Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Oiling Shredder
Follow this procedure and repeat twice. All cross-cut shredders require oil for peak performance. Failure to oil may result in diminished sheet capacity, increased noise, or the machine stopping.
- Apply shredder oil across the paper entry (B) [?].
- Press and hold the Forward control (R) [➡️].
- Shred one sheet of paper.
- Press and hold the Forward control (R) [➡️] for 2-3 seconds to clear any residual oil.
⚠️ CAUTION: Only use a non-aerosol vegetable oil in a long nozzle container, such as Fellowes 35250.
Cleaning Auto-Start Infrared Sensors
Paper detection sensors are designed for maintenance-free operation. However, paper dust can block the sensors, causing the motor to run even when no paper is present. Two sensors are located in the center of the paper entry (B) [?].
- Turn off and unplug the shredder.
- Lift the CD/Card flap (D) [?].
- Locate the Auto-start infrared sensor in the center of the paper entry.
- Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol.
- Using the cotton swab, gently wipe away any contamination from the paper sensors.
Preventive Maintenance and Miscellaneous Troubleshooting
- Run the shredder in reverse [⬅️] for 15 seconds daily to clear the cutters.
- Empty the wastebasket (E) [?️] when the Bin Full indicator (K) [?️] is illuminated. Use Fellowes shredder bags (#36052).
- The shredder will not function if the pull-out bin (E) [?️] is not fully inserted or if the bin needs to be emptied.
- When shredding for prolonged periods, the motor may become warm and require a cool-down period. The Overheat indicator (I) [?] will alert you to this; the model requires approximately 20 minutes to cool down.
Accessories
Maintenance is important for protecting your investment. Recommended accessories include Shredder oil (#35250) and PS-79Ci Shredder plastic bags (#36052).
