1. Positioning

In which room should the alarm be installed?
Your Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm is suitable for landings, hallways, bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and kitchens.

Common sources of CO include: oil and gas boilers, portable generators, oil or solid fuel cookers, gas or paraffin heaters, barbecues, clogged chimneys, wood or gas fireplaces, any gas or fossil fuel-burning appliance, and even adjoining properties.

Areas to avoid: Do not install the CO alarm in areas that are excessively dusty, dirty, or greasy, as dust, grease, and household chemicals can affect sensor performance.

Where in the room should I place the alarm?

  • Near fuel-burning appliances: Place alarms at a horizontal distance of 1m – 3m from the potential source, on the same side of a partition, and at the highest point of the room if ceilings are sloped.
  • Wall mounting: Position the alarm close to the ceiling, at a height greater than any door or window, and at least 150mm from the ceiling.
  • Ceiling mounting: Ensure at least 300mm clearance from any wall or ceiling obstruction (e.g., light fittings).
  • Additional alarms: Install alarms in remote rooms where occupants spend significant time and may not hear alarms elsewhere, and in every sleeping room.
  • Sleeping areas: Place alarms in sleeping rooms and rooms remote from fuel-burning appliances relatively close to the occupants' breathing zone.

Consult EN 50292 for further guidance on siting and mounting. Proper installation, use, and maintenance of fuel-burning appliances, including ventilation and exhaust systems, are essential and not replaced by this alarm.

2. Installation

2.1. Alarm Activation

  • To activate your CO alarm, insert batteries into the rear of the device. It will activate automatically.
  • A rapidly flashing green light indicates setup; wait for a 'heartbeat' flash before testing.
  • Press and hold the ?️Test / button to test the alarm. Release the button to exit test mode.

2.2. Alarm Installation

Freestanding on a shelf: The alarm is designed to stand freely.

Mounting on a wall:

  1. Drill two 5.0mm holes into the wall, spaced 56mm apart.
  2. Screw the base plate onto the wall.
  3. Slide the alarm onto the base plate and ensure it is secure. Check that batteries do not dislodge when removing the unit from the wall.

3. CO Alarm Awareness

A loud alarm is a warning of potentially lethal levels of carbon monoxide. NEVER IGNORE THIS ALARM; FURTHER EXPOSURE CAN BE FATAL.

Immediate Actions in Case of Alarm:

  • Check residents for symptoms of CO poisoning.
  • Contact the proper authorities to resolve CO problems.
  • ?️Ventilate: Stay calm, open doors and windows. Stop using all fuel-burning appliances and turn them off if possible.
  • ?Evacuate: Evacuate the property immediately.
  • ?Ring for Help: Call your fuel supplier's emergency number. Do not use appliances again until checked by an expert. Seek immediate medical help for anyone showing CO poisoning symptoms (headache, nausea), informing medical personnel of suspected CO poisoning.

IMPORTANT: Depending on the CO level, it can take up to 10 minutes for the sensor to clear and the alarm to stop. Do not re-enter the property until the alarm has stopped.

Symptoms of CO Poisoning:

  • Mild Exposure: Slight headache, vomiting, fatigue (often 'flu-like').
  • Medium Exposure: Severe throbbing headache, drowsiness, confusion, fast heart rate.
  • Extreme Exposure: Unconsciousness, convulsions, cardiorespiratory failure, death.

CO Levels and Effects:

  • 35 ppm: Maximum allowable for continuous exposure for healthy adults over 8 hours.
  • 200 ppm: Slight headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea after 2-3 hours.
  • 400 ppm: Frontal headaches within 1-2 hours; life-threatening after 3 hours.
  • 800 ppm: Dizziness, nausea & convulsions within 45 minutes; unconsciousness within 2 hours; death within 2-3 hours.

This apparatus protects against acute effects but may not protect individuals at higher risk due to age, pregnancy, or medical conditions. Consult a doctor if in doubt.

Alarm Silence:

  • WARNING: If the cause of an alarm is unknown, ventilate and evacuate before using this feature.
  • Press the ?️Test / button. The sounder will stop for 5 minutes.
  • The alarm will not silence if >150 ppm is detected. Silence mode can only be activated once per alarm event until CO levels are negligible. If CO levels rise above 180 ppm during silence, the alarm will resume.

Sleep Easy™ Silence Feature:

  • To silence a low battery warning chirp at night, press the ?️Test / button. The alarm will silence for 8 hours, and the amber LED ? will continue to flash.
  • Replace batteries as soon as possible. The feature is disabled for 30 days after battery replacement.
  • You can silence the device a maximum of 10 times. The unit still detects CO and alerts to faults during Sleep Easy mode.

Alarm in Absence:

  • If an alarm occurs while you are away, the device will notify you upon your return.
  • If not silenced, the alarm continues until CO levels drop below 50 ppm.
  • After an alarm, the red warning light ? will flash twice every 40 seconds for 7 days if not cancelled by the Test button.

4. Maintenance

  • Test monthly: Press and hold the ?️Test button. The alarm should sound and the red LED ? should flash 4 times. If not, contact Technical Support. Release the button to exit test mode.
  • Cleaning: Vacuum your alarm every 3 months. Do not use cleaners or solvents. Do not paint the alarm.
  • Replacement: Replace the alarm every 10 years. The replacement date is marked on the unit.
  • Important: Do not use any test method other than the one described. Do not tamper with the alarm.

5. System Status Indicators

Your CO alarm constantly checks its sensor and circuitry. It indicates faults or low battery power with audible chirps and LED flashes:

  • Low Battery: 1 beep / 1 amber flash ? every 40 seconds. Action: Replace batteries.
  • Fault: 2 rapid beeps / 2 rapid amber flashes ? every 40 seconds. Action: May not detect CO; replace immediately.
  • End of Life: 3 rapid beeps / 3 rapid amber flashes ? every 40 seconds. Action: May not detect CO; replace immediately.

If your alarm has a fault or indicates End of Life, it must be replaced immediately as it may not detect CO leaks.
