FireAngel Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Models: FA3313, FA3322, FA3328 & FA3820
User Manual
Introduction
This user manual provides instructions for the FireAngel Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms. The original English version of the manual is considered the authoritative text in case of discrepancies. The CO alarm is designed for continuous monitoring of CO levels and is suitable for residential use, including caravans, motor caravans, and boats. It should be installed by a competent person.
1. Positioning
Where to install the alarm: The CO alarm is suitable for hallways, landings, bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and kitchens. Common sources of CO include boilers, generators, cookers, heaters, barbecues, fireplaces, and any fuel-burning appliances. Avoid installing in dusty, dirty, or greasy areas as this can affect sensor performance.
Placement within the room:
- If in the same room as a fuel-burning appliance, place it 1-3 meters horizontally from the source, on the same side of a partition, and at the highest point of the room if there are sloped ceilings.
- If wall-mounted, place it close to the ceiling, higher than doors/windows, and at least 150mm from the ceiling.
- If ceiling-mounted, ensure it is at least 300mm from any wall or ceiling obstruction (e.g., light fittings).
Additional alarms: Consider installing alarms in remote rooms where occupants spend significant time awake and may not hear alarms from other areas, and in all sleeping rooms. Place alarms in sleeping areas close to the occupants' breathing zone.
Caravans & Boats: Follow the same placement guidelines. An alarm is needed in any room with a fuel-burning appliance. If the caravan has a single living space, one alarm may suffice, but sleeping areas in separate rooms require an alarm.
Key positioning considerations: Do not place directly above heat or steam sources, and position 1-3 meters from the nearest edge of a potential CO source.
2. Installation
Alarm Activation: Pull the disabling tab to activate the alarm. For FA3328, attach the base plate. Wait up to 1 minute for the green LED to flash. Test the alarm by pressing the Test / button. Note: FA3322, FA3328, and FA3820 sound at a lower volume when the Test / button is pressed once; double-press for full volume.
Deactivation: Store the disabling tab for later use. To deactivate for travel or storage, reinsert the tab into the underside of the device (FA3313, FA3322, FA3820). Verify deactivation by pressing the Test / button.
Mounting:
- Freestanding: The alarm can stand freely on a shelf.
- Wall Mounting: Secure using 2 x 3.5mm screws (not included). Drill holes 70mm apart for FA3313, FA3322, FA3820, or 56mm apart for FA3328. Insert wall plugs and screws, then slide the alarm into place. Ensure it is secure.
- FA3328 Trade: Mount using a fixing pin through the base plate.
FA3328 Anti-Tamper Lock: Activate by knocking out the plastic tab next to the lock symbol. To unlock, insert a small screwdriver into the hole at the bottom and slide the unit off the base plate.
3. CO Alarm Awareness
A loud alarm indicates potentially lethal CO levels. NEVER IGNORE THIS ALARM.
Immediate Actions:
- Check Residents: Look for symptoms of CO poisoning (headache, nausea, fatigue).
- Ventilate: Open doors and windows. Stop using and turn off fuel-burning appliances if possible.
- Evacuate: Leave the property immediately.
- Call for Help: Contact your fuel supplier's emergency number. Seek medical attention for anyone experiencing symptoms, mentioning suspected CO poisoning. Do not use appliances until checked by an expert.
Alarm Signal: A loud audible signal of 4 chirps (85 dB at 3m) and a flashing red light every second. The alarm responds faster at higher CO concentrations (e.g., within 3 minutes at 300 ppm).
CO Levels and Effects:
- 35 ppm: OSHA maximum for 8-hour exposure for healthy adults.
- 200 ppm: Slight headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea after 2-3 hours.
- 400 ppm: Frontal headaches within 1-2 hours; life-threatening after 3 hours.
- 800 ppm: Dizziness, nausea, convulsions within 45 minutes; unconsciousness within 2 hours; death within 2-3 hours.
Early Warning: Models FA3322, FA3328, FA3820 provide an early warning for low CO levels (e.g., 10-20 ppm over 4 hours 35 mins). The pattern is 1 short chirp, 1 long chirp, and an amber flash every 25 seconds. Silence the early warning by pressing Test / for 12 hours.
Alarm Silence: Press Test / to silence the alarm for 5 minutes. The alarm cannot be silenced if CO levels exceed 150 ppm.
Alarm in Absence: If an alarm occurs while you are away, the device will flash red twice every 20 seconds after the CO level drops below 50 ppm, indicating a past dangerous CO level. The light flashes for 7 days unless cancelled.
Important Note: It can take up to 10 minutes for the sensor to clear and the alarm to stop after CO levels decrease. Do not re-enter until the alarm has stopped.
Vulnerable Individuals: This alarm protects against acute CO effects but may not provide sufficient protection for individuals at higher risk (due to age, pregnancy, or medical conditions). Consult a doctor if in doubt.
4. Maintenance
- Test Monthly: Press the Test button. The alarm should sound. Contact support if it doesn't.
- Cleaning: Vacuum the alarm every 3 months. Do not use cleaners or solvents.
- Painting: Do not paint the alarm.
- Replacement: Replace the alarm every 10 years. The replacement date is marked on the unit.
- Testing Methods: Use only the methods described in this manual. Do not tamper with the alarm.
5. System Status Indicators
The alarm continuously checks sensor and circuitry accuracy. Faults and low battery levels are indicated by audible chirps and flashing amber LEDs/LCDs.
- Low Battery: 1 beep/min, 1 amber flash/min. For FA3313, replace batteries. For FA3322, FA3328, FA3820, replace the alarm within 30 days.
- Fault: 2 rapid beeps/min, 2 rapid amber flashes/min. CO detection may be impaired; replace immediately.
- End of Life: 3 rapid beeps/min, 3 rapid amber flashes/min. CO detection may be impaired; replace immediately.
Important: If a fault or end-of-life condition is indicated, the alarm must be replaced immediately as it may not detect CO leaks.
6. Sleep Easy™ Silence Feature
If the low battery chirp occurs at night, press the Test / button to silence it for 8 hours. The amber LED will continue to flash. This feature can be used up to 10 times. For FA3313, replace batteries promptly; the feature is disabled for 30 days after replacement. For FA3322, FA3328, FA3820, replace the alarm.
Night Time Sensing (FA3322 & FA3328 only): These models automatically reduce LED brightness at night. If a low battery chirp was silenced during the day, the device reactivates the silence for another 8 hours at night.
7. FA3322 LCD Screen Indicators
The FA3322 model functions as both a CO and extreme temperature alarm. The LCD screen displays various indicators:
- Standby Mode: Shows current room temperature (±0.5°C). Displays 'ALL CLEAR' if CO levels are below 10 ppm.
- CO Alarm: Displays CO level in ppm. Flashes red every second and shows 'EVACUATE!' for dangerous levels. Flashes amber and shows 'WARNING' for early warning.
- Alarm Silence: Silence icon appears. Red flashing and 'EVACUATE!' for dangerous CO; amber flashing and 'WARNING' for early warning.
- Alarm in Absence: Flashes red and shows 'WARNING'. PPM reading shows the maximum CO level recorded during the last alarm.
- Extreme Temperature Warning: Displays 'WARNING' with temperature/humidity. Flashes amber and sounds 6 chirps. Auto-silences at night and times out after 4 days. Can be paused for 1 week by pressing Test / .
- Monthly Overview/System Test: Press Test / once to view monthly metrics (temperature, max CO, max humidity) and system checks (sounder, sensor, battery, circuitry).
- Fault Messages: Flashes amber and shows 'Err' with an error code.
- Low Battery Signal: Flashes a low battery icon and shows 'Err'.
- End of Life: Shows 'EOL' with an error code.
