This manual provides instructions for the Dyson Gen5outsize cordless vacuum cleaner.

In the Box

Your machine comes with one or both of the following cleaner heads:

  • Fluffy Optic™ cleaner head: Features a precisely-angled blade of light to make invisible dust visible on hard floors. It houses a soft fluffy brush bar and has an electrical connector.
  • Digital Motorbar™XL cleaner head: A wider cleaner head for covering more surface. It uses Dyson DLSTM technology to monitor brush bar resistance and adapt power across floor types. Hair removal vanes prevent tangling. It has a brush bar and a suction control slider.

Other included components:

  • Main body: Shows the bin and battery attached.
  • Charger: A one-piece unit with plug, connector, and cable.
  • Wall Dok™: A rectangular dock for wall mounting with screws.
  • Wand with Built-in dusting and crevice tool: Stores a crevice tool for on-the-spot cleaning.

Some tools may not be included. Additional tools can be purchased at www.dyson.com.

Additional tools described:

  • Combination tool: Two tools in one (wide nozzle and brush) for quick switching between cleaning and dusting tasks.
  • Scratch-free dusting brush: Soft bristles for cleaning delicate surfaces, with a flexible connector.
  • Hair screw tool: Anti-tangle conical brush bar spirals hair into the bin; for smaller spaces.
  • Extension hose: Adds flexible reach for cleaning high or low areas.
  • Low-reach adaptor: Bends to clean under low furniture (up to 90° wand angle adjustment).
  • Light pipe crevice tool: Crevice tool with LED lights for dark, narrow spaces.
  • Up-top adaptor: Bends and locks at different angles for hard-to-reach high areas.
  • Fabric and mattress tool: Removes dust, dirt, and allergens from mattresses and upholstery.
  • Soft dusting brush: Enclosed in soft nylon bristles for gentle, vacuum-assisted dusting.
  • Stubborn dirt brush: Stiff nylon bristles for dislodging ground-in dirt from coarse carpets and car interiors.
  • Wand clip: Attaches to the wand to hold tools.

Getting Started

The LCD Screen

The machine features an LCD screen located on the filter end, displaying information and allowing control via a silver Selection button.

Using the LCD Screen

The Selection button is used to navigate power modes and settings.

Power Modes

Your machine has three power modes:

  • Eco mode: Provides maximum run time for longer cleans. The screen displays a full battery in green.
  • Auto and Med mode: Offers a balance of power and run time. The screen displays a blue battery. Auto mode is activated when the Digital Motorbar™XL cleaner head or Hair screw tool is attached, adapting suction power to dust levels.
  • Boost mode: Designed for intensive spot cleaning of ground-in dirt. The screen displays a red battery, indicating the shortest run time.

Connecting Components

Attach the cleaner head to the wand, and the wand to the main body. Ensure the wand release button aligns with the top of the main body before connecting.

Dust Particle Display

A piezo sensor continuously sizes and counts dust particles at the inlet. The machine categorizes, counts, and displays the amount of particles picked up. Bars on the screen rise and fall based on detected debris, indicating when an area is clean.

The LCD Screen

Settings Menu

Control machine settings using the Selection button. Press and hold the button until the menu screen appears. Press the button to cycle through options. Hold to select an option.

Menu options include:

  • Language: Select screen language preference.
  • Alerts: Turn on-screen alerts On or Off.
  • Serial numbers: View machine serial numbers.

To exit the settings menu, press and hold the Selection button on the 'Exit menu' screen until the countdown ends.

Change Language

In the settings menu, select 'Language'. Press and hold the Selection button until the language list appears. Tap to scroll through languages, then press and hold until the countdown ends to confirm selection. A green tick ✔️ indicates completion. Release the button during the countdown to cancel.

Change Alert Settings

In the settings menu, select 'Alerts'. Tap to highlight 'On' or 'Off'. Hold the button until the countdown ends and a tick ✔️ appears to confirm. Alerts can be turned off, but blockage alert pulsing will remain to ensure blockages are cleared.

Find Your Serial Numbers

Navigate to 'Serial numbers' in the settings menu. Press the button to move through your serial number information.

Run Time Countdown

When the battery needs charging, the machine pulses three times, and a low run time icon appears. This icon is amber for normal modes and red for Boost mode. An empty battery is indicated by a red warning icon ⚠️.

Battery Health and Boost Advice

For best performance and battery life, use Eco or Auto/Med modes. Frequent use of Boost mode may trigger a battery conservation message.

Alerts

The following alerts may appear on your LCD screen:

  • Airway obstructed: Your machine has a blockage that needs removing. Turn off the machine before checking.

  • High storage temperature: Your machine is being stored in a place where the temperature is too high. Move your vacuum to a cooler place.

  • Cold temperature: Your machine is too cold. Move your vacuum into a warmer environment and leave to warm up.

  • Non-Dyson battery: A non-Dyson battery has been detected. This may be counterfeit. Use genuine parts to protect your machine.

  • Refer to compliance and safety information:

  • Clean filter: Your filter needs cleaning. Refer to the 'Washing your filter' section. Ensure the filter is completely dry (at least 24 hours) before reattaching.

  • Filter not sealed: Your filter isn't properly fitted. Remove and reattach it, twisting clockwise until it locks into place.

Caring for your Floors

Check that the underside of the cleaner head or tool is clean and free from objects that may cause damage.

Before vacuuming, consult the manufacturer's recommended cleaning instructions for your flooring, rugs, and carpets.

The brush bar on your machine can damage certain carpet types and floors. If a rotating brush bar causes fuzzing on carpets, use the machine without the motorized floor tool and consult your flooring manufacturer.

Charging your Machine

You can use your machine immediately or charge it partially before first use.

Connect the charger directly to the machine or use the Wall Dok™. Blue LEDs on both sides of the battery flash during charging and remain lit for five seconds when fully charged (100%).

Your machine will not operate or charge if the ambient temperature is below 5°C (41°F) to protect the motor and battery.

Changing your Click-in Battery

If you have additional batteries, alternate them to maintain even performance.

Removing your battery

Push the Battery release button at the front of the battery unit and slide the battery off your machine. Charge the removed battery.

Refitting your battery

Align your battery with the handle and slide it in. Push firmly until it clicks into place.

Emptying your Bin

Empty the bin as soon as the dirt reaches the MAX level; do not overfill. Overfilling can affect performance and particle count accuracy.

Ensure the machine power is turned OFF before removing the wand or releasing the bin.

Remove your wand

Press the grey wand release button on the top of the wand and pull the wand away from the bin.

Release the dirt

Hold the machine over the bin, pointing downwards. Firmly push the red bin release button. The bin will slide down, cleaning the shroud, and the bin base will open. The bin base will only open if the red bin release button is pushed down completely.

Minimize dust contact

Cover your bin tightly in a dustproof bag while emptying. Remove the bin carefully, seal the bag tightly, and dispose of it.

Close the bin

Push the bin base upwards until the bin and bin base click into place.

Cleaning your Bin

Empty the bin first. Press the red button located on the bin runner to release the bin and slide it off the runner.

Clean your bin using a damp, lint-free cloth. Ensure the bin and seals are completely dry before refitting.

Your bin is not dishwasher safe. The use of detergents, polishes, or air fresheners is not recommended as it may damage your machine.

Clearing Blockages

Disconnect your machine from the charger and turn the power OFF before looking for blockages. Be aware of sharp objects and allow the machine to cool down.

If a blockage is detected, the motor will pulse, and the machine will automatically cut out until the blockage is cleared.

Check the main body

Remove the bin and check for blockages in the main body of your machine, paying attention to the air inlet on the right-hand side below the bin.

Check the wand and cleaner head

Check the wand for blockages at both ends. Turn the cleaner head over to check for obstructions on the brush bar and air inlet.

Re-assemble your machine

Ensure all parts are securely fitted before using your machine. Clearing blockages is not covered by your guarantee.

Clearing Obstructions from your Digital Motorbar™XL Cleaner Head

This cleaner head does not have a washable brush bar. Check and clear obstructions regularly.

Ensure the machine is disconnected from the charger and power is OFF. Do not touch the trigger.

Remove your brush bar

Press the cleaner head release button on the end of the wand. Place the cleaner head upside down. Lift the catch on the cleaner head to release the brush bar. Slide your brush bar out of the cleaner head.

Look for obstructions

Clear any debris from your brush bar. Check inside the cleaner head and remove any debris or blockages. Wipe the cleaner head and brush bar with a damp, lint-free cloth.

Replace your brush bar

Push the brush bar back into the cleaner head. Push down the brush bar release catch until it locks in position.

Using your Digital Motorbar™XL Cleaner Head

The Digital Motorbar™XL cleaner head has a slider control to adjust suction.

Move the suction control slider on the top of the cleaner head to select the required suction:

  • Maximum suction: For ground-in dust and debris on durable floor coverings, hard floors, and heavily soiled carpets/rugs.
  • Suction for dust and debris: For lightly-soiled carpets, rugs, and hard flooring; also for large debris like peanuts or rice.
  • Suction for deep pile carpets and delicate flooring: For vacuuming deep pile carpets/rugs or flooring with greater resistance; also for lightly soiled floors and delicate flooring like vinyl, parquet, and lino.

Clearing Blockages from your Hair Screw Tool

This tool does not have a washable brush bar. Check and clear obstructions regularly.

Ensure the machine is disconnected from the charger and power is OFF. Do not put any part of your machine in a dishwasher or use detergents, polishes, or air fresheners.

Remove the cover and brush bar

Remove the Hair screw tool from the wand or machine. Push the base plate open. Press the red lever down to release the cleaner head cover. Pull the cleaner head cover off the main body of the tool.

Look for obstructions

Pull your brush bar firmly to remove it from the main body. Check and remove any obstructions from all three parts of your Hair screw tool. Wipe with a damp, lint-free cloth.

Re-assemble the Hair screw tool

Put your brush bar back into position and press firmly until it clicks. Check the red locking lever is in the unlocked position. Align the cleaner head cover with the guide on the main body and push it down until it clicks. Push the red locking lever up until it clicks and push the base plate back into place.

Washing your Filter

Wash your filter at least once a month to maintain optimum suction power.

Important: Your filter must be completely dry before putting it back into your machine. Using a damp filter could damage your machine.

Twist off

Twist your filter counter-clockwise and pull it away from your machine. The filter is located at the rear of your machine.

Tap

Before washing, tap the filter gently over a bin to remove loose dust and debris.

Wash

Wash the pleated paper element under warm running tap water ?, with the foam element facing downwards. Then, wash the foam element with the foam element still pointing downwards. Hold the filter on its side and run warm water over the outside of the foam element, gently rubbing to remove dirt. Repeat washing until the water runs clear.

Shake and dry

Empty the filter and shake it firmly to remove excess water. Keep shaking until no more water comes out. Place the filter on its end and leave to dry for at least 24 hours in a well-ventilated, warm place.

The filter is left to dry with the pleated filter end facing downwards.

After cleaning, wash your hands thoroughly with anti-bacterial soap. Check that the filter unit is completely dry.

Important: Do not dry your filter in a dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, oven, microwave, or near a naked flame.

To refit

Position the filter unit in place on the main body and twist clockwise until it clicks into place.

Washing your Fluffy Optic™ Brush Bar

Your Fluffy Optic™ cleaner head has a washable brush bar. Check and wash it regularly.

Ensure the machine is disconnected from the charger and power is OFF. Do not put any part of your machine in a dishwasher or use detergents, polishes, or air fresheners.

Remove your brush bar

Press the cleaner head release button on the end of the wand. Place the cleaner head upside down. Push the end cap up fully and pull the brush bar out of the cleaner head. Remove the end cap from the brush bar (do not wash the end cap).

Wash and dry your brush bar

Hold your brush bar under running water and gently rub to remove lint or dirt. Stand your brush bar upright with the closed end facing upwards to dry completely for at least 24 hours.

Refit your brush bar

Before refitting, check that your brush bar is completely dry. Reattach the end cap to your brush bar. Slide your brush bar into the cleaner head. Push the end cap back down to the closed position.

Cleaning your Illumination Lens

To maintain optimum performance, keep your lens clean. Clean the lens only when the cleaner head is not attached to your machine.

Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the lens.

Cleaning your Tools

Do not put any part of your machine in a dishwasher or use detergents, polishes, or air fresheners.

Wipe tools with a damp, lint-free cloth, avoiding the connector end. Ensure your tools are completely dry before using them.

Tools include: Combination tool, Scratch-free dusting brush, Extension hose, Soft dusting brush, Stubborn dirt brush, Low-reach adaptor, Light pipe crevice tool, Up-top adaptor, Fabric and mattress tool.

Looking after your Machine

Machine Care

To maintain optimum performance, clean your machine regularly and check for blockages.

If your machine is dusty, wipe it with a damp, lint-free cloth. Check for blockages in the cleaner head, tools, and main body. Wash your filter regularly and ensure it dries completely. Do not use detergents or polishes to clean your machine.

Battery Care

For the best performance and battery life, use Eco or Auto/Med mode. Your machine will not operate or charge if the ambient temperature is below 5°C (41°F) to protect the motor and battery.

Your Serial Numbers

You can find your serial numbers on your machine, battery, charger, and in your screen settings.
