Mastech MS8301B Digital Multimeter Quick Start Guide
This guide provides essential information for the safe and effective use of the Mastech MS8301B Digital Multimeter.
Safety Precautions
Special attention should be paid when using this test and measurement instrument, as improper usage may cause electric shock and damage the equipment.
- Use proper measurement category (CAT), voltage, and amperage rated probes, test leads, and adapters for the measurement.
- Do not use or store the device around explosive gas, vapor, or under high temperature and humidity.
- When handling test probes and crocodile clips, keep fingers behind the physical guard.
- Examine test leads before use. If any part of the insulation is deteriorated, replace them with proper functional test leads.
- Connect the common test lead before the live test lead, and remove the live test lead before the common test lead.
- Before measuring current, ensure the instrument fuses are available and disconnect the power supply to the circuit being tested.
- Remove batteries if the device is not used for an extended period or stored in temperatures above 45°C to prevent battery leakage and damage.

Basic Measurement Operations
The following diagrams illustrate basic measurement operations:
DC Voltage Measurement:
Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA port and the black test lead to the COM port. Select the DC voltage function (V=). Connect the test leads across the component to be measured. The multimeter displays the voltage. Example: 220V.
AC Voltage Measurement:
Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA port and the black test lead to the COM port. Select the AC voltage function (V~). Connect the test leads across the component to be measured. The multimeter displays the voltage. Example: 27.01V.
DC Current Measurement:
Connect the red test lead to the mA or A port (depending on the expected current) and the black test lead to the COM port. Select the DC current function (A=). Break the circuit and connect the multimeter in series with the load. The multimeter displays the current. Example: 2.53A.
Resistance Measurement:
Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA port and the black test lead to the COM port. Select the resistance function (Ω). Connect the test leads across the component to be measured. The multimeter displays the resistance. Example: 0.6Ω, 500Ω, 22Ω.
Capacitance Measurement:
Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA port and the black test lead to the COM port. Select the capacitance function (C). Connect the test leads across the capacitor to be measured. The multimeter displays the capacitance. Example: 50.12μF.
Temperature Measurement:
Connect the temperature probe to the VΩmA port (red) and COM port (black). Select the temperature function (°F). Insert the probe into the environment or onto the object to measure temperature. The multimeter displays the temperature. Example: 90°F.
Frequency/Duty Cycle Measurement:
Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA port and the black test lead to the COM port. Select the frequency/duty cycle function (Hz/%). Connect the test leads across the signal source. The multimeter displays the frequency or duty cycle. Example: 62%.
