Connecting Portable Devices to Your Vehicle's Multimedia System
This guide provides information on connecting and using various portable devices with your vehicle's multimedia system. It covers USB drives, Apple devices (iPod, iPhone), and Bluetooth-enabled devices, along with supported file formats and operational guidelines.
Connecting Portable Media Devices
Portable media devices connect to the interface located in the center console's storage compartment. Rear passengers can use the ports at the rear of the center console. The CD/DVD drive in the glove compartment allows for optical disc playback.
Supported Portable Devices:
- USB Drives: Devices must be formatted with FAT or FAT32 file systems. It is not recommended to use external hard drives as this may shorten their service life. For optimal performance, use USB drives with a capacity of 128 GB or less. Exceeding this recommendation may cause malfunctions. Note that accessing files on larger USB drives may result in a noticeable delay.
- Optical Media: Supports music CDs or DVDs.
- Apple Devices: Supports iPod, iPad, iPod Touch, iPod Mini, iPhone, iPod Nano, iPod Classic Gen4, Gen5, and Gen6. Full functionality is not guaranteed for earlier models. iPod Classic Gen1, Gen2, Gen3, and iPod Shuffle are not supported. When an iPod is fully supported, album artwork is displayed. Some generations may not recognize or display album artwork.
- Multimedia Devices: Supports devices with HDMI or MHL connectivity.
You can control and search for content on iPods, drives, and Bluetooth devices using the touchscreen.
Caution: Always disconnect your iPod when leaving the vehicle to prevent battery drain.
Supported File Formats:
The multimedia system supports MP3, WMA, AIFF, M4A, FLAC, AAC, and ALAC file formats. Other formats may also be playable.
Note: If a software update was initiated on a connected portable device, the device may need to be restarted for the multimedia system to recognize it.
USB Playback Quality
For maximum playback quality with multimedia files on USB devices, use a lossless compression format. The bitrate should be at least 192 kbps for compressed files. A higher bitrate is recommended.
Note: iPod is a trademark of Apple Inc.
Some MP3 players may have file systems not supported by the audio system. To use such players, switch them to USB Removable Device or Mass Storage Device mode.
Bluetooth® Connection
Information on pairing and connecting devices via Bluetooth can be found in the relevant section of the owner's manual. Refer to "Establishing a Connection and Connecting via the Multimedia Player." For more information on Bluetooth technology, see "Bluetooth® Information." A list of compatible Bluetooth devices is available on the Land Rover website: www.landrover.com.
Devices listed on the website have been tested for compatibility with Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. Functionality depends on the device's software version and battery status. The device manufacturer, not the vehicle manufacturer, provides the warranty for the device.
Note: Depending on the connected device, some functions, such as Bluetooth pairing, may not be compatible.
Connecting Portable Devices
Warning: Drivers should not be distracted by or operate the multimedia device while driving. Distraction can lead to severe injury or death.
Warning: Ensure all multimedia devices are secured while driving. Loose items can become projectiles during sudden maneuvers, braking, or accidents.
Caution: Before connecting a device, read the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure the device is suitable for use and complies with all connection and operation instructions. Failure to do so may damage the vehicle's multimedia system or the device itself.
Device Ports
Connect your device to the appropriate port:
- HDMI/MHL port in the front of the cabin.
- Front USB ports.
- HDMI port in the rear of the cabin.
- Rear USB ports.
- HDMI/MHL port in the rear of the cabin.
The front ports are located in the center console's storage compartment. The rear multimedia system ports are in the rear of the center console.
Notes:
- Use the cable supplied with your multimedia device for USB connections.
- For Apple devices, high-quality cables are recommended for improved performance.
- Do not connect multiple USB devices to a single USB port.
- USB ports provide charging. Devices with high power requirements (over 7.5W) may charge without an indicator.
- HDMI ports do not provide charging.
- Ensure Apple devices have the latest iOS version for full support.
- Voice command functionality is available only for recent Apple devices connected via Lightning. It is not available for devices connected via Bluetooth®.
Playing Content from Portable Devices
Use the touchscreen controls to manage playback from USB drives or compatible Apple devices. For Bluetooth devices, use the touchscreen controls for playback management. Some functions may be unavailable depending on device and player support. For HDMI/MHL connected devices, control playback directly on the device.
Caution: Do not connect hard drives via USB; they are not designed for automotive use and may be damaged.
Connecting Multiple Devices
You can connect multiple portable multimedia devices simultaneously. Use the touchscreen to switch between connected devices by pressing the iPod, USB, Bluetooth, or HDMI/HML buttons.
Note: For USB and iPod devices, playback resumes from where it was stopped when switching back to a previously connected device.
Establishing Connection with the Multimedia Player
The pairing and connection procedure varies by device model.
- Turn on the ignition and ensure the touchscreen is active.
- Tap the settings icon¹ on any screen, select 'All Settings' from the SETTINGS menu, then 'Connectivity', and finally 'Bluetooth'.
- The BLUETOOTH SETTINGS screen appears. Select 'Pair New Device'.
- The vehicle's Bluetooth system is discoverable while the pairing screen is open.
- Search for devices from your portable device. This may be called 'Pair New Device' on some devices. Refer to your device's manual for details. The vehicle's name will appear during the search.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. If prompted, press 'Yes' to confirm pairing. Some devices complete pairing here. Others may display a PIN code. Enter the PIN code on your device or select 'Yes' if the displayed PIN codes match.
- A confirmation message appears upon successful pairing and connection. Return to the previous media source or select 'Source' to choose your multimedia device from the list.
Notes:
- Connecting a USB device while streaming from an Apple device via Bluetooth will disconnect the Bluetooth connection. Reconnect via BLUETOOTH SETTINGS.
- Synchronizing large amounts of data on Apple devices may take time. During synchronization, playback is only available through the Apple device. Voice control will be unavailable.
- After synchronization, device control via the multimedia system or voice control becomes available. If the Apple device's playlist was updated since the last sync, re-synchronization is required. Voice control for Apple devices will be temporarily unavailable during this process.
Changing/Disconnecting Devices
To connect or disconnect a paired Bluetooth device:
- Tap the settings icon¹ on any screen, select 'All Settings' from the SETTINGS menu, then 'Features', 'Phone', 'Bluetooth settings', or 'Connectivity', and 'Bluetooth'.

To unpair a Bluetooth device:
- Follow steps 1-3 above, then select 'Forget Device'.
To forget all paired Bluetooth devices:
- Follow steps 1-3 above, then select 'Forget All Devices'.
File Copying/Import
The media import/copy function depends on the vehicle's infotainment system specifications and market. Not all systems have a built-in hard drive. If your system lacks a hard drive, this function is unavailable.
The vehicle's internal memory stores navigation, voice control, and metadata. Multimedia data can be imported from USB drives via the MEDIA PLAYER SETTINGS screen.
- Tap the settings icon¹ on any screen.
- Select 'All Settings'.
- Select 'Features'.
- Select 'Media'.
- Select 'Media Player Settings'.
To import multimedia data from a CD, select the CD data copy icon. A message will appear upon completion.
