4.3 Installing modules

4.3.1 SAM1/SAM2/SIM1/SIM2

WARNING/ATTENTION

Switch off the terminal before opening the battery door.

The SAM/SIM connectors are located inside the terminal, in a closed compartment. Turn the terminal over and remove the battery door. SAM1, SAM2, SIM1, and SIM2 are identified by engraved marks on the lower housing.

  • When inserting a SAM/SIM into a slot, ensure the cut corner is positioned as indicated.
  • Close the battery door.

ADVICE

The AXIUM EX8000 is equipped with a dual SAM slot. When using two SAM cards, it is recommended to insert the bottom one first, then the top one. When using only one SAM card, insert it into the SAM1 slot (bottom).

SIM and SAM cards share the same form factor; ensure cards are inserted into the correct slot for their type.

4.3.2 MicroSD Memory Card

WARNING/ATTENTION

Switch off the terminal before opening the battery door.

The MicroSD connector is located inside the terminal, in a closed compartment. Turn the terminal over and remove the battery door. MicroSD cards are identified by engraved marks on the lower housing. Insert the MicroSD card and push it to the end. Close the battery door.

NOTE: The terminal supports SDHC MicroSD cards up to 32GB.

4.4 Battery

4.4.1 Charging the battery

For safety reasons, the battery is not fully charged upon delivery. Please charge it before use. When used daily, the terminal charges its battery each time the power adapter is connected; charging starts automatically.

To charge the battery using the power adapter:

  • Connect the power adapter to the terminal's USB Type-C connector on the left side.
  • Connect the power adapter to the power supply mains network.

When charging, a red charge light at the top of the screen will display. This light turns green when the terminal is fully charged.

5. Recommendations

5.1 Safety

Lithium cell

The AXIUM EX8000 is fitted with an internal lithium cell that should only be accessed by a qualified technician.

Battery

  • The AXIUM EX8000 is fitted with a battery specially designed for this terminal.
  • Only use approved power supplies, cables, and batteries listed in the Ingenico catalogue.
  • Do not short-circuit the battery.
  • Do not attempt to open the battery.
  • Used batteries must be disposed of at appropriate sites.

Battery lifespan depends on factors including features used, number of charge/discharge cycles, and use temperature.

Signs that the battery should be replaced:

  • The battery fuel gauge/percentage meter drops randomly.
  • Charging finishes prematurely even though the battery did not accept much power.
  • Sudden capacity drops without warning.
  • Self-discharge rate is high and often uneven.
  • The battery gets very hot during charging.
  • The battery starts bulging.

CAUTION/ATTENTION

RISK OF EXPLOSION IF BATTERY IS REPLACED BY AN INCORRECT TYPE. DISPOSE OF USED BATTERIES ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS.

SAM1/SAM2/SIM1/SIM2 Readers compartment

The battery door, which covers the battery, SAM1/SAM2/SIM1/SIM2 readers, must be in place during normal operation. Refer to sections "Installing modules" and "Installing the battery".

On airplanes

  • Your terminal must be switched off by removing the battery pack when on an airplane.
  • Non-compliance with these safety rules may result in legal action and/or a ban on later access to cellular network services.

Explosion areas

Some regulations restrict the use of radio equipment in chemical plants, fuel depots, and sites where blasting is carried out. Operation near fuel pumps requires the terminal to be protected by a specially fitted and certified cover.

Thunderstorm weather

Mobile phone electromagnetic waves can conduct lightning. It is easier to suffer lightning strikes in damp atmospheres, especially in open areas. Do not use wireless terminals during thunderstorm weather.

Electronic health appliances

The terminal is a radio transmitter that may interfere with health appliances like hearing aids, pacemakers, or hospital equipment. Consult your doctor or the equipment manufacturer for appropriate advice.

5.2 Security of your terminal

This device conforms to currently applicable PCI PTS security requirements. Upon receipt, check for signs of tampering or unauthorized modifications. Periodically check:

  • The keypad is firmly in place.
  • There are no unusual wires connected to any ports.
  • The device does not display a "tampered state" notification. If it does, the terminal will repeatedly flash "Warning Detected" and become unusable. Contact the terminal helpdesk immediately if this message appears.

Ensure privileged access is granted only to verified, trustworthy staff. Never leave the terminal unattended where it could be stolen or replaced.

5.3 Fixed installation

  • Install the device angled at 45 degrees or more to prevent oversight of PIN entry from the rear.
  • Use a swivel stand or position it optimally to prevent PIN entry oversight.
  • Place conspicuous notices and educational material to inform users to shield their PIN during entry.

The device must be installed to prevent oversight by other customers, possibly by positioning lanes and the device to naturally shield the keypad. Alternatively, the environment can provide this shielding.

The terminal is recommended for indoor use only, within the environmental ranges specified in Section 4.

ADVICE

Position the terminal on a check stand to make cardholder PIN spying infeasible. Use adjustable stands to allow users to swivel or tilt the terminal, making visual observation of PIN entry difficult. Position security cameras so the PIN-entry keypad is not visible. Never ask customers to divulge their PIN; advise them to ensure they are not being overlooked.

5.4 Cleaning the terminal

Good rules for proper cleaning:

  • Unplug all wires from the terminal before cleaning.
  • Apply soapy water or another approved cleaning product to a soft, non-abrasive cloth.

IMPORTANT: Apply the cleaning product to the cloth, not directly or sprayed onto the terminal, to prevent damage.

  • Do not clean electrical connections.
  • Do not use solvents, detergents, or abrasive products, as they may damage plastic or electrical contacts.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
  • Do not insert anything other than credit cards into the smart card reader slot.

5.5 Transport and storage

When transporting the terminal:

  • Protect from snow, rain, and excessive sun exposure.
  • Transport with care to avoid mechanical impact.
  • Do not throw the unit. Prevent package intrusion during transportation to avoid breakage. Store in original packaging.
  • Do not store in warehouses containing harmful gases, or inflammable, explosive, or corrosive chemicals.
  • Do not expose to strong mechanical vibrations or strong magnetic fields.
  • Packaging should be stored at least 15 cm above the ground and kept away from heat, cold, windows, or air inlet sources by at least 50cm.
  • Follow the specific stored conditions noted in Section 4.

6. Safety and Standards

7. Troubleshooting

Q: The terminal cannot be started.

A: The device may be in a low energy status or an application running on the device may be in a defective state. Ensure the device is powered, and then reset it. If this still fails, please contact customer service.

Q: Transaction Processing Failure

A: Following reasons are likely to cause transaction failure:

  • Damaged magnetic card or smart card SAM card.
  • Damaged card reader.
  • Improper operation of card swiping.
  • Damaged or unconnected phone line.

To diagnose:

  • Try using more than one magnetic card to test the transaction.
  • Ensure card swiping is operated correctly.
  • Manually process the transaction instead of using the card reader. If manual transaction works, the issue may be with the card reader.
  • Use more than one smart card to test the transaction. Ensure the SAM card is correctly inserted into the card slot.
  • Check if the SIM card is installed correctly and local wireless communication network functions are active.

If problems persist, please contact customer service.
