Safety Notes

Please note the following safety instructions to avoid malfunctions, damage, or physical injury:

Operation

Before First Use

Remove the pole saw and all accessories from the packaging. Check all parts for damage in transit. Keep packaging materials out of reach of children, as there is a risk of suffocation.

Assembling the Guide Bar and the Saw Chain

Always wear gloves when handling the saw chain.

  1. Place the pole saw on a level surface.
  2. First remove the sprocket cover (5) by screwing the inner ring of the chain tensioner (4) counter-clockwise.
  3. Slide the saw chain (1) around the chain wheel and into the slot of the guide bar. Observe the correct chain running direction; note the chain icon (12) on the housing. Ensure chain links match the chain icon.
  4. Re-attach the sprocket cover (5) on the motor housing and turn the inner ring of the chain tensioner clockwise to slightly tension the guide bar.
  5. Turn the outer ring of the chain tensioner to tighten the saw chain. The chain should be tensioned so it is not too loose and can be lifted off the guide bar by a few millimeters.
  6. Turn the inner ring of the chain tensioner (4) again to fix the saw chain (1) in this position.

Chain Oil

  1. The pole saw is supplied without oil. Fill the oil tank (3) with chain oil before use. Operating the pole saw without chain oil will damage the machine.
  2. Open the oil tank cap. Use only biodegradable chain saw oil. Observe the oil level indicator on the oil tank. The oil tank must be filled at least to the half. Prevent dirt from entering the oil tank, as it can damage the built-in oil pump.

Saw Chain

  • Use only sharp chains. Dull chains can jam easily.
  • When working with new chains, regularly check the chain tension, as new chains can lengthen considerably during initial operation.
  • The service life of a saw chain depends on sufficient lubrication and correct tensioning.
  • Do not tension a hot chain. After cooling, the chain may shorten and become over-tensioned.

Extension Cord Clamp

While working, the power cord might inadvertently unplug. To prevent this, fasten the power cord and the extension cord together using the included extension cord clamp.

Operation

  1. Check the oil level and connect the power plug to mains.
  2. To switch on the pole saw, first press the safety switch (11) and then the trigger switch (10). Release the safety switch.
  3. To switch off, release the trigger switch (10). Note that the motor may continue to run for a moment.
  4. During cutting, ensure the oil level does not run out; refill in time.

Adjusting the Telescopic Tube and the Shoulder Strap

  1. To extend the telescopic tube, unscrew the lock nut (7) slightly.
  2. Pull out the telescopic tube to the desired length and securely re-tighten the lock nut. The pole saw can be extended up to a total length of 2.76 m.
  3. For balanced weight distribution, use the shoulder strap. Fasten the strap to the karabiner hook and adjust it to your preferred working position.

Changing the Saw Chain

  • Always pull the power plug before performing any maintenance.
  • The saw chain is sharp. Wear gloves when handling it. Slacken the chain by unscrewing the chain tensioning screw until it hangs loose.
  • Refer to the "Assembling the Guide Bar and the Saw Chain" section for instructions.
  • Clean oil and sawdust from under the cover with a brush or compressed air. Pay special attention to cleaning the oil duct and the surrounding area.

Hints

  • The electric pole saw is a rugged, powerful device. Observe the following hints:
  • Always ensure the oil tank is sufficiently filled and that the oil does not run out. Chain saw oil based on caster oil can be purchased from Westfalia.
  • The chain should always be well-oiled; if necessary, soak the chain in biodegradable chain saw oil before starting work. While using the saw, ensure the chain remains well-oiled. If not, oil it manually.
  • After each use, remove the sprocket cover and clean the area beneath. Also, clean the ventilation holes.
  • For optimal performance, the chain must be sharp. If the saw's performance decreases and the chain does not cut wood by itself, sharpen the chain using a Westfalia saw chain sharpener or have it professionally sharpened. Replace the chain when it is worn out. Sharpeners and chains are available from Westfalia.

Kickback

  • The electric pole saw is equipped with a low-kickback chain. Engineering efforts have been made to minimize kickback. However, kickback cannot be entirely avoided when cutting with the upper tip of the blade.
  • Be prepared for kickback when using this area of the blade or hitting another branch. Always hold the unit firmly in both hands.

Cutting Branches

  • Thin branches can be cut off with a single, clean cut. To prevent splitting or buckling, cut the branch in several sections.
  • When cutting thicker branches, first make an undercut. Saw from below, starting away from the final cut point, creating a notch about one-third to halfway through the branch's diameter. This prevents the branch from buckling when you make the final cut from the top.
  • Finally, cut off the stump with a clean cut. You may seal the cut with a suitable compound.

Repairs and Changing the Carbon Brushes

  • Repairs, such as changing carbon brushes, should only be undertaken by trained personnel.
  • If a malfunction occurs, do not continue using the unit or attempt self-repair. Contact customer service for questions or problems.

Maintenance, Cleaning and Storing

  • If the device will not be used for an extended period (e.g., over winter), drain the biodegradable chain saw oil from the oil tank and oil ducts to prevent gumming and potential damage.
  • Pour out remaining oil from the oil tank and store it in a cool, dark place. Add a spoonful of mineral oil to the oil tank. Spray penetrating lubricant on the chain and run the saw for a few moments to distribute the mineral oil through the oil pump and ducts.
  • When using the pole saw again, apply chainsaw oil liberally.
  • Hang the pole saw upright, with the saw end on top.
  • Before cleaning and maintenance, unplug the device. Pull the plug itself, not the cord, from the socket.
  • Always follow instructions for lubrication, chain tensioning, and accessory changes. An improperly tensioned or lubricated chain may break or increase the risk of kickback.
  • Replace dull saw chains or have them professionally sharpened.
  • Do not wipe the housing with harsh detergents or aggressive chemicals to avoid surface damage.
  • Always switch off the pole saw when transporting or carrying it. Slide the guide bar cover (13) over the guide bar.
  • Store the pole saw indoors in a dry, dust-free place, protected from dust, dirt, and extreme temperatures.
