Your First Ride
Important Notes
Caution: Your e-bike moves significantly faster than a regular bicycle, especially in active power-assisted mode. For your first ride, choose an open area with plenty of space. It is recommended to start with pedal assist off to familiarize yourself with braking and gear shifting. Gradually test the pedal assist levels to find your optimal settings.
Safety Checks Before Every Ride
- Ensure the battery pack is charged and installed correctly.
- Verify the display is on and functioning properly.
- Check that the brakes are working properly.
- Confirm tires are inflated to the proper pressure.
- Ensure front and rear lights are working properly.
- Check that all cable connections are secure.
Operating Your New e-Bike
To turn on the bike: Press the power button on the left handlebar until the display lights up.
To ride: Get on the bike and twist the throttle bar or pedal. The bike will move. You can change the power level using the control buttons; level 1 is the slowest, and level 5 is the fastest. Level 0 is the human-powered mode.
Hand Throttle Control
In hand throttle mode, the amount of power assist is determined by the throttle. Twist the throttle from its resting position; the farther you twist, the more power is delivered to the motor. To slow down, release the throttle and let it return to its resting position, applying brakes if necessary. You can pedal while using the hand throttle to conserve energy and extend battery life.
Security and Warnings
Before Riding the e-BIKE
Always perform a mechanical inspection before riding:
- Hardware is properly secured.
- Tires are properly inflated.
- Brakes are working properly.
- Handlebar is adjusted and fixed.
- Front wheels are secure and properly locked.
When Riding the e-Bike
- Obey all road rules and local traffic laws.
- Respect motorists, pedestrians, and other cyclists. Do not race or taunt others.
- Ride cautiously; others may not see you. Avoid getting too close to other cyclists or vehicles.
- Ride on bike lanes and trails.
- Obey traffic stop signs and signals.
- Use appropriate gestures when turning and parking.
- Do not wear headphones.
- Do not bring adult passengers.
- Do not carry anything that obstructs your view or control of your e-bike.
Avoid Riding in Certain Situations
- Poor visibility (dawn, dusk, dark).
- Bad weather.
- Extreme rider fatigue.
- When e-bike maintenance is required.
Off-road Riding
- Obey local laws regarding off-road riding.
- Practice on easier terrain to build skills.
- Always wear proper safety gear.
- Ride with a companion in the backcountry.
Riding in the Rain
- Avoid riding in wet weather if possible.
- If riding in wet weather, reduce your speed.
- Wet weather affects visibility, braking, and traction, impacting both the rider and others.
- Accidents are more common in wet weather conditions.
Riding at Night
Riding at night is significantly more dangerous than riding during the day.
- Wear reflective clothing.
- Obey local laws regarding night riding.
- Reflectors assist visibility by reflecting car and street lights but are not a substitute for required lights. Ensure reflectors are in good condition and do not remove them.
- Always use an adequate lighting system when riding at night or in poor visibility. Inadequate lighting can lead to serious injury or death. Consider aftermarket batteries or a generator lighting system if necessary.
Extreme and Aggressive Riding
Electric bike designs have limitations. Extreme, stunt, and competition riding may exceed these limits and are not recommended by the manufacturer, as they increase the risk of death and serious injury.
Battery and Maintenance
Charging Your e-Bike Battery
Follow these steps for charging:
- Open the cover of the charging port and fold the bicycle.
- Insert the key into the battery and hold it down until it is screwed clockwise to the end. The lock lever should be fully retracted to remove the battery.
- Slide the battery off. Be careful, as the battery is heavy.
Battery Charging Information
- The battery can be charged while installed on the e-bike or after removal.
- Turn off the battery before charging.
- Charging time is approximately 6 hours for a fully discharged battery.
- The charger's LED will turn from red to green when the battery is fully charged. Disconnect the charger at this point.
- Do not leave the charger connected for extended periods after charging is complete.
- It is normal for the charger and battery to heat up slightly during charging. If you notice anything unusual, stop charging and contact Engwe Bikes Product Support.
Tips for Increasing Range
The e-bike's range varies based on rider, terrain, wind, user input, and cargo weight. To maximize range:
- Ride at a lower Pedal Assist System (PAS) level.
- Use lower PAS levels and pedal when climbing hills.
- Pedal when starting from a standstill.
Battery Recycling
When your battery is no longer usable, dispose of it according to state and federal regulations. Lithium-ion batteries cannot be placed in standard trash cans.
Recommended Maintenance Interval
Regular inspection and maintenance are key to ensuring your Engwe bike performs optimally and to reduce wear and tear. The following intervals are suggestions; actual needs may vary.
Weekly / 160-321km (100-200mi)
- Inspect: Check hardware for proper torque.
- Service: Wipe the frame with a damp cloth to clean.
- Replace: Replace any component that has been confirmed by Engwe Bikes Product Support or a certified bicycle mechanic to be damaged.
Monthly / 402-1207km (250-750mi)
- Inspect: Check the drivetrain for proper alignment and tension. Check the derailleur/brake function (including chain, cassette, sprockets, derailleurs). Check the correctness of the wheels and quiet wheel operation (no spoke noise). Check the condition of the frame for any damage.
- Service: Use the barrel adjusters to tension the derailleur/brake cables if needed. Clean and lubricate the drivetrain. Check brake pad alignment and brake cable tension. Check that the crankset and bike moves correctly. Clean the derailleur tension. Check chain tension.
- Replace: Replace brake and shift cables if necessary. Replace brake pads if necessary.
Every 6 Months / 1207-2011km (750-1250mi)
- Inspect: Check the drivetrain (chain, sprockets, freewheel, derailleur). Check all brake and shifter cables for corrosion or fraying. Check spoke tension. Check accessory installation (rack mount bolts, fender hardware, and alignment).
- Service: Tune by certified standards, well-respected bike mechanics. Lubricate the bottom bracket.
- Replace: Replace the brake pads. Replace tires if necessary. Check cables and housings. Replace cables and housings if necessary.
