Your First Ride
Important Note: Please be VERY CAREFUL when riding your e-bike for the first time. E-bikes move significantly faster than regular bicycles, especially in active power-assisted mode. Choose an area with plenty of open space for your initial rides. It is recommended to start with pedal assist turned OFF to familiarize yourself with the braking and gear shifting. Gradually test the pedal assist levels to find the optimal settings for your riding style.
Safety Checks Before Every Ride
- Ensure the battery pack is charged and installed correctly.
- Verify the display is on and functioning properly.
- Confirm the brakes are working correctly.
- Check that the tires are inflated to the proper pressure.
- Ensure the front and rear lights are working properly.
- Verify that all cable connections are secure.
Operating Your New e-Bike
To turn on the bike: Press the power button on the left handlebar until the display lights up.
To start riding: Ride the bike and twist the throttle bar or pedal. The bike will move. You can change the power level using the control buttons. Level 1 is the slowest, and Level 5 is the fastest. Level 0 is the human-powered mode.
Other Functions
Hand Throttle Control: In hand throttle mode, the amount of power assist is controlled by twisting the throttle. The further you twist, the more power is delivered to the motor. To slow down, release the throttle and apply the brakes if necessary. You do not need to pedal when using the hand throttle, but pedaling can help conserve energy and extend battery life.
Security and Warnings
Before Riding the e-BIKE
Always perform a mechanical inspection before riding:
- Ensure hardware is properly secured.
- Check that tires are properly inflated.
- Verify brakes are working properly.
- Ensure the handle is adjusted and fixed.
- Confirm front wheels are secure and properly locked.
When Riding the e-Bike
- Obey all road rules and local traffic laws.
- Respect motorists, pedestrians, and other cyclists. Do not race or taunt others.
- Ride cautiously, as others may not see you. Maintain a safe distance from other cyclists or vehicles.
- Ride on bike lanes and trails whenever possible.
- Obey traffic stop signs and signals.
- Use appropriate gestures when turning and parking.
- Do not wear headphones.
- Do not carry adult passengers.
- Do not carry anything that obstructs your view or control of your e-bike.
Situations to Avoid
- Riding in poor visibility (dawn, dusk, dark).
- Bad weather.
- Extreme rider fatigue.
- When e-bike maintenance is required.
Off-road Riding
- Obey local laws regarding off-road riding.
- Practice on easier terrain to enhance skills.
- Always wear proper safety gear.
- Ride with a companion in the backcountry.
Riding in the Rain
- Avoid riding in wet weather as much as possible.
- Reduce speed if riding in wet weather.
- Wet weather affects visibility, braking, and traction.
- Accidents increase in wet weather conditions.
Riding at Night
- Riding at night is more dangerous than during the day.
- Wear reflective clothing.
- Obey local laws regarding night riding.
- Reflectors are not a substitute for lights. Ensure reflectors are in good condition and do not remove them.
- Always use an adequate lighting system. Failure to do so could result in serious injury. Consider aftermarket batteries or a generator lighting system if necessary.
Extreme and Aggressive Riding
Electric bike designs have limitations. Extreme, stunt, and competition riding may exceed these limits and is not recommended by the manufacturer. Such activities increase the risk of death and serious injury.
Battery and Maintenance
Charging Your e-Bike Battery
- Open the cover of the charging port and fold the bicycle.
- Insert the key into the battery, hold it down, and turn clockwise until it is fully inserted (the lock lever should be completely retracted).
- Carefully slide off the battery.
Battery Charging Information
- The battery can be charged while installed on the e-bike or after removal.
- Turn off the battery before charging.
- Charging time depends on the battery's remaining capacity. A full charge takes approximately 6 hours.
- The charger's LED will turn from red to green when fully charged. Disconnect the charger at this point.
- It is normal for the charger and battery to heat up slightly during charging.
- If you notice anything unusual during charging, stop charging and contact Engwe Bikes Product Support.
Tips for Increasing Range
The bike's range varies based on rider, terrain, wind, user input, and cargo weight. To maximize range:
- Ride at a lower PAS level.
- Use lower PAS levels and pedal when climbing hills.
- Pedal when starting from a standstill.
Battery Recycling
Dispose of used batteries according to state and federal regulations. Lithium-ion batteries cannot be placed in standard trash cans.
