Introduction
The Model 1020VS is designed for quick functional testing of consumer electronics, car audio, home audio, video, and home theater equipment in retail stores and service centers. It can test a wide range of products including DVD players, VCRs, CD and tape players, preamps, equalizers, receivers (including 5.1 channel home theater receivers), power amps, and speakers. The unit utilizes a self-contained car CD or tape unit (not supplied) as a signal source and monitor for RF CD changers, and an external video monitor (not supplied) for video output. Its visual and audible monitoring capabilities allow for rapid verification of output presence, level, balance, and distortion. For in-depth analysis, test channels can be displayed on an oscilloscope (not supplied).
The Model 1020VS features PCM digital-to-analog conversion, a 5-channel, 25 watt-per-channel load box, built-in monitor amplifier and speakers, and support for personal stereos, computer speakers, FM antenna signals, and RF CD changer inputs. Power can be supplied by a 5-amp, 12-volt DC power supply for car audio units, or a 1.5-amp wall pack power supply (ordered separately) if car power is not required.
Preparation for Use
-
Power Supply Selection
Choose either an Audio Authority 13.8-volt, 5-amp power supply (part number 572-012, $35.00) for car audio testing, or a 1.5-amp wall-mounted supply (part number 571-006, $7.00). A hookup cable for the 5-amp power supply is included. You will also need some or all of the following common items, depending on your application:
- (4) stereo RCA patch cords
- (5-7) pieces of stripped and tinned 18 gauge speaker wire
- (1) F-to-F cable
- (1) F-to-Motorola cable
- (1) mini-phone plug patch cord
- (1) component video cable
- (1) composite video cable
- (1) S-Video cable
It is recommended to disconnect wires from the Left and Right speaker outputs to prevent potential shorts and damage.
-
Signal Source Setup
Use any DIN-mount car CD or tape player as the signal source and CD changer RF demodulator. Install the radio's DIN bracket into the front panel cutout of the 1020VS. Support the radio at the rear with a back strap screwed to the provided hole in the 1020VS back panel, adjusting as necessary for a car installation. Wire a speaker-output unit to the 7-position terminal block as shown.
Terminal Identification
The 7-position terminal block is identified as follows:
- 1: Left +
- 2: Left -
- 3: Right +
- 4: Right -
- 5: Ignition
- 6: Battery
- 7: Ground
If a Speaker Level only radio is installed, wire terminals 1-7 using the front channel outputs and DC connections of the radio, then plug the terminal block into the circuit assembly port on the 1020VS. If the radio has both Line Level (RCA) and Speaker Level outputs, connect only the RCA cables to the radio and the "LINE SOURCE" jacks on the back of the 1020VS. Connecting both RCA and speaker outputs offers no advantage.
-
Antenna and Video Connections
Plug the internal Motorola cable into the radio's antenna jack. For internal RF distribution, connect an indoor or outdoor antenna or signal generator to the rear 75-ohm Antenna jack. Connect a video monitor to all three video pass-through jacks.
-
Self-Test
Perform the Self-test as described in the "Test Modes" section.

Front Panel Layout Description
The front panel features a central car stereo unit, labeled "KENWOOD KRC-5205". To its left are input jacks for ANTENNA (1), CD CHANGER (2), DIGITAL (3), SOURCE (4), FRONT/REAR/SUB (5), PERSONAL STEREO (6), and EQUALIZER. To the right of the stereo are outputs for AMPLIFIER/RECEIVER (7), OUTPUT indicators (8), MONITOR (9), VOLUME (10), SPEAKERS (11), COMPUTER SPEAKERS (12), and LEFT/RIGHT SPEAKER terminals (13). Below these are 13.8 VOLTS DC terminals (14), and video pass-through jacks for COMPOSITE VIDEO (15), S-VIDEO (16), and COMPONENT VIDEO (17). The POWER switch (18) is located on the far right.
Test Modes
The 1020VS supports numerous test modes. The following descriptions illustrate its use, distinguishing between home and car audio where applicable. Power source is the primary difference (wall outlet vs. 13.8-volt DC terminals). The front panel provides graphical prompts for common configurations.
Note: Adjustments to source radio controls or video monitor settings may be necessary for certain tests, such as tuning an FM receiver for an RF-output CD changer or selecting component vs. S-Video.
Self Test
Turn on the Power switch (18). Select the "Source" position on the Monitor dial (9) and "Internal Speakers" (11). Set the 1020VS Volume control (10) to 9 o'clock. Connect a jumper between the Source jacks (4) and Front jacks (5). Play the disk, tape, or radio of the internal Source unit and adjust its volume control upward until the Front Output indicator lights (8) begin flashing strongly. Sound should be heard from the internal speakers. Maintain this Source volume level for all tests.
DVD/VCR Testing
Connect the player's video output to the appropriate video jacks and play a disk or tape. The video monitor will display the output, indicating video signal presence. Ensure the video monitor is set to receive the correct video type. For audio testing, connect the audio output as directed, select Internal Speakers (11), and adjust the volume level (10) as desired.
CD/Tape Player Testing
Connect the player's output to the Front (5) and/or Digital (3) jacks. Play a disk or tape. The Front Output lamps (8) will light, indicating channel presence. Select "Digital" or "Front" on the Monitor dial (9) as needed, select Internal Speakers (11), and adjust the volume level (10).
CD Changer Testing
For line-level output, connect the changer to the Front jacks (5) and operate as described for CD/Tape players. For RF changers, connect to the CD Changer jack (1), select "Front" on the Monitor dial (9). Front Output lamps (8) will light, and sound will be heard from the internal speakers.
Car Head Unit Testing
Connect speaker outputs to the Front and Rear terminals (7). Plug an antenna cable into the Antenna jack (2). Connect ignition and battery wires to the red (+) 13.8 Volt terminal (14) and ground to the black (-) terminal (14). Front and Rear Output lamps (8) will illuminate to show active channels. Select "Front" and "Rear" on the Monitor dial (9) as needed. If line level outputs are present, connect them to the Front and/or Rear (5) RCA jacks; the speaker terminals will then be inactive.
Equalizer Testing
Connect the equalizer's inputs to the Source jacks (4) and its front, rear, and sub outputs to the respective jacks on the 1020VS. The output lamps for the present channels will light up. Select "Front", "Rear", and "Sub" for monitoring. Note: Sub monitor output will be weak but audible through the 1020VS's small full-range speakers.
Receiver Testing
Plug a line input of a receiver into the Source jack (4). Plug the Sub output of a home receiver into either Sub jack (5). Connect speaker outputs to the Front, Rear, and Center terminals (7) as needed. Observe the Output indicators (8) and select the appropriate channels to Monitor. Mono sub signals will light only one Sub Output lamp. Check a tuner section using the Antenna (2) signal.
Power Amp Testing
Connect speaker outputs to the Front and Rear terminals (7) as needed. Plug the amplifier input into the Source jacks (4). Observe Output lamps (8) and use the Monitor dial (9) to check the desired channels. A Y-adapter can be used to drive four-channel amps. The internal 25 watt-per-channel load box is protected by self-resetting fuses; excessive output will cause these fuses to open, removing the load from the amplifier under test.
Speaker Testing
Connect speakers to the Left and Right terminals (13). Select "Source" on the Monitor dial (9) and "External Speakers" (11). Adjust the 1020VS Volume control (10).
Personal Stereo Testing
Plug the line or headphone output into the Personal Stereo jack (6) and play radio, disk, or tape. Select "Front" on the Monitor dial (9).
Computer Speakers Testing
Plug the input into the Computer Speakers jack (12), which provides a fixed level signal. Adjust volume using the computer speaker's volume control.
Digital Sources Testing
Plug the output into either the coax or optical ports (3) and select "Digital" on the Monitor dial (9).
Other Products Testing
Choose the 1020VS inputs and outputs that match the connectors on the product being tested. Note that line-level signals are approximately 1 volt. The 1020VS is not designed to test the millivolt signal levels of magnetic phono cartridges or microphones.
