Audio Authority 985DTO Distribution Amplifier: Installation and Usage Guide

How to Use Model 985DTO Distribution Amplifiers

Introduction

The Model 985DTO enhances distribution amplifiers by adding optical digital audio output alongside common coaxial digital audio outputs. As part of the 985 family, these modules can be cascaded to support an extensive number of television monitors from a single source without compromising picture quality. The amplifier boasts an ultra-wide bandwidth, ensuring compatibility with current and future video standards. It is also suitable for RGB video distribution in professional video production and duplication environments.

The 985DTO facilitates digital audio distribution, offering lossless transmission of digital audio signals in both optical and coaxial formats from the source to four audio control centers. A single digital audio input is sufficient to enable both optical and coaxial output formats, as each 985DTO automatically converts the digital audio input to both formats at its outputs.

Audio Output Capabilities

The optical digital audio outputs can connect to up to four additional Home Theater In a Box (HTIB) systems. For HTIB systems lacking a digital audio input (such as many "all-in-one" receiver/DVD units), the stereo analog audio outputs can be utilized. Alternatively, these analog outputs can be connected to standard TV analog audio inputs.

Single Amplifier Installation – Four or Fewer Video Displays

Mount the 985DTO unit to a surface near the intended video displays and audio equipment. For component video (YCbCr or YPbPr), use matched, high-quality 75-ohm coaxial video cables to connect the source outputs to the 985DTO's Component Bus Input jacks. If composite video is preferred, refer to Figure 2 for connection details.

Connect the source's digital audio output(s) to the 985DTO's Bus Input jacks using high-quality 75-ohm patch cords or an optical cable. For analog audio, use standard RCA patch cords.

Each video display should be connected to one set of 985DTO outputs using matched video patch cords. A sound system's digital audio input can be connected to either of the 985DTO's Digital Audio output jacks.

Figure 1 Description: This diagram illustrates a single 985DTO setup. A Component Video Source connects to the 985DTO's input jacks (labeled A, B, C, D). Connections A and B are for Digital Audio (Coaxial and Optical, respectively), C is for Analog Stereo Audio, and D is for Component Video. The 985DTO has corresponding outputs. The diagram shows the 985DTO's "BUS" output connecting to the "BUS" input of subsequent 985DTO units in a cascaded setup. Outputs from the 985DTOs are shown connecting to HTIB Systems and Speakers or an HDTV. A note indicates that only one digital audio input (A or B) is needed for all digital audio outputs.
Caution! Use only an Audio Authority 571-001 or 571-013 Power Supply. Other supplies can cause damage or reduce performance.

Multi-Amplifier Installation - More than Four Video Displays

Mount the 985DTO modules in proximity to the video displays and audio source. Connect the component video source outputs (YCbCr or YPbPr) to the Bus Input jacks of the nearest 985DTO using matched, high-quality 75-ohm coaxial video cables. For composite video, consult Figure 2.

Connect the audio output of the source to the first 985DTO's Bus Input using high-quality 75-ohm patch cords and/or an optical cable.

To cascade units, connect the Bus Output jacks of the first 985DTO to the Bus Input jacks of the subsequent 985DTO, and so forth. The bus is designed to be automatically terminated correctly at 75 ohms at all times. Note that there is no optical bus output; the Digital Audio Bus is always coaxial.

Connect each video display to a set of 985DTO outputs using matched video patch cords. For audio, connect a sound system's digital audio input to either Digital Audio output jack. If TV sound is desired, connect the 985DTO's left/right stereo outputs to the TV's stereo inputs.

Figure 2 Description: This diagram illustrates connecting composite video. It shows a Composite Video Source connecting to multiple 985DTO units. The 985DTO has inputs labeled A, B, C, E, where A is Digital Audio (Coaxial), B is Digital Audio (Optical), C is Analog Stereo Audio, and E is Composite Video. The diagram emphasizes connecting composite video inputs and outputs to the Y component video jack, and states that only composite video OR component video should be used in a system, not a combination. The bus connections for cascading are shown, leading to an SDTV output.

Powering the 985DTO

Power the 985DTO unit or system using an Audio Authority 571-001 (or 571-013) wall pack plugged into a 120-volt AC source. Picture and sound output should appear immediately, and no adjustments are necessary.
