Installation Position
Figure 3: Installation Position - Diagram illustrates the recommended placement of the UV disinfection unit within the pool's pipework system.
6.1 Install the Quartz Sleeve
Figure 4: Quartz Sleeve - Diagram shows the assembly of the quartz sleeve, end caps, locking nuts, and O-rings.
- Starting at one end, unscrew the black end cap (B) which houses the bulb socket (F).
- Unscrew the white locking nut (H) from the same end.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 at the other end.
- Slide the quartz sleeve (D) through the UV until it aligns with the hole at the far end.
- Fit a quartz sleeve O-Ring (G) around one end of the quartz sleeve.
- Slide the O-Ring (G) towards the UV body thread, ensuring equal amounts of the quartz sleeve are visible at each end.
- Fit another quartz sleeve O-Ring (G) at the other end, ensuring equal visibility.
- Screw the white locking nut (H) back into position.
- Ensure the locking nut is HAND TIGHTENED to prevent O-Ring damage. No tools are needed.
- Repeat steps 8 and 9 at the other end.
- The quartz sleeve is now in position for the UV bulb.
- For all models, after completing steps 1-4, run the unit wet (without bulbs) to check for leaks and ensure quartz sleeves and O-Rings are correctly installed and water-tight. HAND TIGHTEN FITTINGS ONLY - DO NOT USE TOOLS.
IMPORTANT: Ensure equal amounts of the quartz sleeve are visible at each end before fitting locking nuts.
6.2 Testing the Quartz, O-Rings and Locking Nuts
After connecting to pipework, leak test the quartz sleeve and O-rings. Failure to test properly can lead to water ingress, damaging the bulb socket and end cap sealing ring.
- Fit quartz sleeve, O-rings, and locking nuts.
- Check locking nuts are hand tight only.
- Position and mount the UV unit, connecting to pipework.
- Turn on the pump and run water through the unit.
- Check locking nuts for signs of water leaking.
- If leaks occur, review quartz sleeve installation (Section 6.1).
- If no leaks, the quartz sleeve is properly installed.
⚠️ WARNING: Failure to test for leaks and improper installation may cause water to seep into and damage the bulb socket and ballast. Water damage from improper installation is NOT covered under warranty.
6.3 Install the UV Bulb
Figure 5: UV Bulb - Diagram shows the UV bulb (C), end cap (B), bulb socket (F), locking nut (H), and end cap sealing ring (I).
- Remove all packaging from the UV bulb (C).
- Carefully slide the UV bulb (C) through the quartz sleeve (D).
- While holding one black end cap (B), gently push the cable through it to ease fitting the bulb socket (F) in step 5. IMPORTANT: Do not pull the cable by holding only the bulb socket.
- The end cap sealing ring (I) is pre-seated inside the bulb socket. IMPORTANT: Ensure the sealing ring (I) is not twisted and remains in place.
- Align the UV bulb pins with the holes in the bulb socket and push the socket firmly onto the pins. You may need to hold the other end of the bulb.
- Ensure the UV bulb socket is firmly connected to the UV bulb.
- Repeat steps 3 to 6 for the other end of the unit.
- At one end, slide the black end cap (B) (with sealing ring in place) over the bulb socket, holding the cable to prevent disconnection.
- Screw this end cap onto the white locking nut (H) already on the UV body. HAND TIGHTEN ONLY.
- Repeat steps 8 and 9 for the other end.
- Check all fittings are hand tightened. No tools are needed.
- For multiple bulb units, do not mix up bulb connectors, as this will prevent illumination. HAND TIGHTEN FITTINGS ONLY - DO NOT USE TOOLS.
- Ensure there is sufficient space at one end for bulb/quartz sleeve removal and maintenance.
Section 7: Maintenance
Isolate the unit from electricity and water supplies before maintenance. It is not necessary to stop water flow to change the bulb.
UV bulb lifespan is 9000 hours (approx. 1 year). Replacement is recommended during this period.
7.1 UV Bulb Replacement
7.1.1 To Remove a UV Bulb
- Disconnect the electricity supply.
- Unscrew the black end cap at one end, being careful not to unscrew the white locking nut.
- Slide the black end cap over the wire to reveal the bulb socket. Do not lose the end cap sealing ring.
- Disconnect the bulb socket.
- Repeat steps 2 to 4 for the other end.
- With end caps removed, carefully slide out the UV bulb.
7.1.2 To Install a New UV Bulb
Refer to the UV Bulb installation steps in Section 6.2.
IMPORTANT: After checking all fittings are correctly tightened, you can switch the unit back on.
7.2 Replace / Clean Quartz Supply
Always isolate the unit from electricity and water supplies before maintenance.
7.2.1 To Remove a Quartz Sleeve
NOTE: Removing the quartz sleeve will cause water to flow out of the unit.
- Remove the UV bulb.
- With electricity disconnected, UV isolated, and bulb removed, unscrew the locking nut at one end.
- Drain the unit.
- Carefully remove and keep the quartz sleeve O-Ring (G) safe.
- Unscrew the locking nut from the other end and remove and keep the O-Ring (G) safe.
- Carefully remove the quartz sleeve, avoiding dropping it inside the UV body.
- To drain any remaining water, unscrew mounting brackets, disconnect pipework, and tilt the unit.
- Clean the sleeve with a soft cloth or paper towel. For limescale, use vinegar or a cold water descaler.
7.2.2 To Re-Install a Quartz Sleeve
Refer to the re-installation of the quartz sleeve and UV bulb in Section 6.1.
IMPORTANT: After checking all fittings are correctly tightened, you can switch the unit back on.
7.2.3 Check for Leaking Water
If water leaks from end caps, check the following:
- O-Ring is undamaged.
- Quartz sleeve has no cracks or breaks.
- Locking nut compresses the O-Ring to form a watertight seal.
- End caps are sufficiently tight.
- All components are clean and free from dirt/debris.
NOTE: Items 1-5 are service items and not covered by warranty. They are available from your AstralPool stockist.

Section 9: Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I change the UV bulb?
The UV bulb has an effective lifespan of 12 months (9000 hours) and should be changed annually to maintain effectiveness.
Is the UV suitable for salt water use?
The UV unit materials resist corrosion in salt water, but the stainless steel bracket may not. Use alternative mounting for saltwater systems.
How long can I leave the unit running?
Units are designed for 24-hour operation. For external applications, if frost-protected, it can run through winter. Otherwise, remove, drain, and store safely for winter.
Can I bury the unit underground?
No. The UV unit is weatherproof but not suitable for situations subject to immersion in water.
Can it be used with ozone?
Yes, the UV is safe with ozone units, but the O-Rings are not. Use rigid pipe with ozone units.
When replacing the bulb I cannot locate it into the bulb socket at the opposite end of the UV?
Follow the procedure for cleaning/replacing the quartz sleeve (Section 7.2.1), which details removing end caps and sockets for easier installation.
