OpenTherm Setup and Configuration
OpenTherm modulating auto-control is a control method used by modern heating systems. Instead of switching a boiler on and off at regular intervals, modulating control allows the boiler's heat output to be controlled to match the thermostat's variable demand. This results in greater system efficiency, energy savings, and increased comfort.
Initial Setup Steps:
- Ensure connections are made and the receiver is powered before inserting batteries into the thermostat.
- After inserting batteries, the thermostat will power on. Press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] and [DOWN ARROW] to choose your language, then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW] to choose the time format (12/24 hour), then press [SELECT] to confirm.
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], set the hour, then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], set the minutes, then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], set the year, then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], set the month, then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], set the day, then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], select the day of the week format, then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], enable or disable daylight saving time, then press [SELECT] to confirm.
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], select your temperature accuracy (0.1°C or 0.5°C), then press [SELECT] to confirm.
When OpenTherm is connected, the thermostat software automatically adapts to OpenTherm parameters.
OpenTherm - Domestic Hot Water (DHW) Setup
- Press [MENU].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW] to access the DHW submenu, then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], adjust the DHW temperature, then press [SELECT].
The thermostat will return to the main screen. The text bar will indicate that hot water is active.
Standard Setup and Configuration
Follow steps 1 to 17 from the OpenTherm Setup and Configuration section. NOTE: Using [UP ARROW] and [DOWN ARROW], you can choose PI (step 2) or INTERVAL (step 6). Choosing one option excludes the other.
PI (Proportional-Integral) Mode
PI mode is a self-learning function that ensures economical system operation by maintaining temperature more precisely and limiting overload conditions. It provides stable ambient temperature, minimizes energy consumption, and achieves significant savings. The RT520 offers 3 types of PI control:
- For radiators (6 Cycles Per Hour - CPH)
- For underfloor heating (3 CPH)
- For electric heating (9 CPH)
Hysteresis
Hysteresis is the difference between the setpoint temperature and the temperature at which the boiler turns on. Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW] to select the desired Hysteresis value, then press [SELECT] to confirm.
Optimum Start / Optimum Stop
Optimum Start is a selectable function that, based on the room's ambient temperature, will start the boiler operation at the optimal time to reach the setpoint temperature, saving energy by running the boiler for the minimum required time. Optimum Stop calculates the house's cooling down time and switches off the boiler as early as possible, preventing unnecessary operation. If sudden heat loss occurs during Optimum Stop, it will be cancelled to restore comfort.
Setup Steps:
- Press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], select ON or OFF for Optimum Start/Stop, then press [SELECT] to confirm.
- The thermostat will return to the main screen.
Programming - Automatic Mode
This mode allows for 6 time intervals per day, each with a different settable temperature. You can configure 2, 3, or up to 6 temperatures per day. Users can define thermostat schedules (temperature setpoints for specific time periods).
Programming Steps:
- Press [MENU].
- Press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], select the program type:
- +2: Program for weekdays and weekends.
- All: Program for the entire week.
- Daily: Daily program.
- Press [SELECT] to confirm.
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], set the hour for the interval, then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], set the minutes, then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], select the setpoint temperature, then press [SELECT].
- Repeat the process for all desired periods.
Deleting Temperature Intervals:
If you do not wish to use all 6 temperature intervals per day (e.g., 1 eco, 2 comfort), you can delete unwanted intervals. Press [UP ARROW] on the interval you wish to delete the temperature from, until lines appear. When lines appear, press [SELECT] to confirm the deleted temperature interval.
Example Weekly Program:
- 6 temps/day: 06:00 - 21°C, 10:00 - 14°C, 12:00 - 21°C, 14:00 - 14°C, 18:00 - 21°C, 21:00 - 14°C.
- 2 temps/day: 06:00 - 21°C, 14:00 - 14°C.
A high temperature should be used for 'on' periods and a low temperature for 'off' periods.
Owner Settings
Owner settings are a PIN-protected feature allowing the owner to set a service reminder on the thermostat. This will alert the tenant when the boiler requires annual servicing. The owner can also set a lock temperature to prevent unauthorized changes.
Setup Steps:
- Press [MENU].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW] to access the owner submenu, then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], enter the PIN number. Press [SELECT] to confirm each digit.
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], select the warning period (service reminder interval), then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], select the lock temperature, then press [SELECT].
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], enter the phone number for service contact, then press [SELECT] to confirm each digit.
- Use [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW], select ON or OFF to enable/disable the owner settings lock, then press [SELECT] to confirm.
Once owner mode is activated, the device locks the setpoint temperature defined by the installer/owner. To unlock, the owner must be contacted and the boiler serviced.
