Visual Description
The INSTEON Thermostat Adapter is a small device designed to connect to the bottom of a thermostat. It features an indicator light labeled "LED" and a button labeled "Set button". The device is marked with "INSTEON COMPATIBLE" logos.
Installing Thermostat Adapter
For optimal INSTEON network performance, ensure you have at least two Access Points (#2443) or other dual-band products installed. You can search for dual-band INSTEON products at: http://www.smarthome.com/dualband
- Plug the Thermostat Adapter into the jack on the bottom of your thermostat.
- The Thermostat Adapter LED will turn on solid green.
Uninstalling Thermostat Adapter
- Open the front cover of the thermostat by gently pulling the right edge of the cover towards you.
- While pressing firmly on the small round button (center, bottom of thermostat), pull down gently on the Thermostat Adapter.
The Thermostat Adapter will disconnect from the thermostat.
Linking Thermostat Adapter to an INSTEON Controller
To use the Thermostat Adapter as a Responder to an INSTEON Controller, follow these steps to link them. Refer to your Controller's Owner's Manual for detailed instructions. These instructions apply to most common INSTEON Controllers. Linking your Adapter to a scene allows your thermostat to adopt a chosen setting.
- Set your thermostat to the desired mode (e.g., Manual/Program/Auto, Heat/Cool, Temperature, Fan Auto/Fan On).
- Set your Controller to Linking Mode. (Typically, press and hold an On or Scene button for 10 seconds, or the Set button for 3 seconds).
- You have 4 minutes to complete the next steps before Linking Mode times out.
- To Link to an ON command:
- Tap the Thermostat Adapter Set button once.
- Press and hold the Thermostat Adapter Set button for about 3 seconds.
- To Link to an OFF command:
- Tap the Thermostat Adapter Set button twice.
- Press and hold the Thermostat Adapter Set button for about 3 seconds.
- Test the link: Change the mode on your thermostat and then tap the button you just linked on the Controller.
- Repeat steps 1-5 for additional scenes and set points on your Controller as needed. Different set points can be linked to different buttons for greater flexibility.
Controlling Thermostat Adapter
Use your linked INSTEON Controller to manage your thermostat:
- Tap an On or Scene button on a Linked Controller to recall the thermostat mode and set points established during linking.
- Tap an Off button on a Linked Controller to turn off the thermostat mode and set points.
- Tap the Bright button on a Linked Controller to raise the set point by a single degree.
- Tap the Dim button on a Linked Controller to lower the set point by a single degree.
Note: To prevent unintended temperature changes, these Bright/Dim operations only apply to Controllers with dedicated Bright/Dim buttons (e.g., RemoteLinc™). Pressing and holding On/Off buttons on devices like SwitchLinc™ or KeypadLinc™ will not change temperature set points.
Linking Thermostat Adapter to Control Other INSTEON Devices
The Thermostat Adapter can also control other remote INSTEON devices when the thermostat switches the A/C, heat, or fan on and off. Refer to your INSTEON device's Owner's Manual for detailed instructions. The following method works for most common INSTEON devices:
- Set your remote INSTEON device to the desired state you wish to activate via the Thermostat Adapter.
- Set your thermostat to the state that will trigger your remote INSTEON device (e.g., Cool, Heat, Fan On mode). Note: The thermostat must be in Off mode to link to Fan On mode.
- Set the Thermostat Adapter to Linking Mode by pressing and holding the Thermostat Adapter Set button for approximately 5 seconds. The Thermostat Adapter LED will begin blinking, and the thermostat display will flash all LCD characters.
- You have 4 minutes to complete the next step before Linking Mode times out.
- Press and hold the Set button on your remote INSTEON device. The Thermostat Adapter LED will stop blinking, and the thermostat display will flash all LCD characters.
- Test the link: Change your thermostat's mode to confirm the remote INSTEON device operates as expected.
