Important Setup Recommendations

Night Owl strongly recommends connecting the NVR to the internet during initial setup. This ensures the NVR receives the latest firmware updates and registers the device to your account. After setup, you may disconnect the NVR from the internet if desired.

For Technical Phone Support: You must manually update the device's firmware to the latest version. The latest firmware is available on the Night Owl Support Site. The NVR must also be registered to receive Technical Phone Support. Remote viewing is not possible without proper setup and registration. Resetting your password is a more involved process for security.

Setup Options

Night Owl offers two primary setup methods:

Option 1: Easy Bluetooth® Wireless Setup (Preferred)

This method does not require a TV or monitor. Setup is completed directly from the Night Owl app on your smart device. An internet connection is required for this option.

Option 2: Manual Setup (TV / Monitor)

This method allows for local viewing via a TV or monitor. While not required for initial setup, it can be used if preferred. An internet connection is not required for this specific setup method, but is recommended for firmware updates.

Step 1: Connecting Your System

Follow these steps to connect your NVR and cameras.

Connecting the NVR to a TV/Monitor (Optional for Option 2)

  • Plug one end of the included 6 ft. HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the back of the NVR.
  • Plug the other end into your TV or Monitor.
  • Note: The TV/Monitor must be tuned to the correct input source to display the NVR's output.

Connecting the USB Mouse

  • Plug the included USB mouse into a USB port on the back of the NVR.
  • Note: This is primarily used for Option 2 (Manual Setup).

Connecting to Your Network

  • Plug one end of the included 6 ft. Ethernet cable into the LAN port on the back of the NVR.
  • Plug the other end into a port on your router or network access point.
  • Note: An internet connection is required for the NVR to access firmware updates and online services.

Connecting Cameras

  • For each wired IP camera, insert one end of its 60 ft. Ethernet cable into a waterproof cable cover.
  • Connect the covered end of the Ethernet cable to the camera's power cable.
  • Connect the other end of the camera's Ethernet cable to an open camera port on the back of the NVR.
  • Repeat for all wired IP cameras.
  • Important: Connect and test each camera locally before final installation.

Powering the NVR

  • Connect the NVR power adapter to the Power Input port on the rear of the NVR.
  • Plug the NVR power adapter into a surge protector or Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).
  • Note: Ensure the surge protector or UPS is switched ON. Some systems may beep upon booting up.

Step 2: Download the Night Owl App

If you are a first-time user, download the Night Owl app from the App Store (for iOS devices) or Google Play Store (for Android devices) onto your smart device. Create and verify your account. If you already have an account, skip to Step 3.

Note: The setup process is the same for smartphones and tablets.

Step 3: System Configuration

Once your hardware is connected and the app is set up, configure your system.

Option 1: Easy Bluetooth® Wireless Setup

  • Log in to the Night Owl app. Allow Bluetooth access if prompted.
  • The app will search for your NVR using Bluetooth. Tap "Continue" to add the NVR to your account. You must be near the NVR for it to be discovered.
  • Name your recorder (e.g., "Home NVR").
  • The app will pair with the NVR. Complete the remaining setup steps within the app and begin viewing your cameras.
  • Note: An internet connection is required for this setup method.

Option 2: Manual Setup (TV / Monitor)

  • If not already connected, connect your NVR to a TV/Monitor using the HDMI cable as described in Step 1.
  • The NVR will start its Startup Wizard. When prompted, select "Manual Setup (not recommended)".
  • Proceed through the Startup Wizard on the TV/Monitor to finish setup.
  • Click "Go to Live View" to begin viewing your cameras.
  • Note: Connecting to the internet is strongly recommended for firmware updates and optimal system performance, even when using manual setup.
