Not Connecting to the Internet?
Night Owl strongly recommends connecting the NVR to the internet. If you choose not to connect, you must manually update the device's firmware to receive technical phone support, you cannot view your system remotely, and password resets will be a longer process.
Step 1: Connecting Your System
Option 1: Easy Bluetooth® Wireless Setup
This is the preferred setup method, requiring no TV/Monitor. You can finish setup quickly from your smart device app.
- Connect NVR to Router: Plug one end of the included 6 ft. Ethernet cable into the LAN port on the back of the NVR and the other end into a port on your router or network access point.
- Connect Camera: Insert one end of the wired IP camera's 60 ft. Ethernet cable into the waterproof cable cover. Connect the covered end of the Ethernet cable to the camera's power cable. Input the other end of the Ethernet cable into an open camera port on the back of the NVR. Repeat for all wired IP cameras. Note: Before installing, connect and test each camera locally to confirm functionality.
- Power Up: Connect the NVR power adapter to the Power Input on the rear of the NVR. Plug the NVR power adapter into a surge protector or Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). Ensure the surge protector or UPS is switched ON.
Option 2: Manual Setup (TV / Monitor)
This option allows local viewing from a TV/Monitor.
- Connect to TV/Monitor: Plug one end of the included HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the back of the NVR. Plug the other end into your TV or Monitor. Note: To view cameras, the TV or Monitor must be tuned to the same input the HDMI is plugged into.
- Connect USB Mouse: Plug the USB mouse into the USB port on the back of the NVR.
- Connect NVR to Router: Plug one end of the included 6 ft. Ethernet cable into the LAN port on the back of the NVR and the other end into a port on your router or network access point.
- Connect Cameras: Insert one end of the wired IP camera's 60 ft.
Step 2: Download Night Owl Protect
If you are a first-time user, download the Night Owl Protect app from your smart device's app store. You can find it on the [App Store] or [Google Play].
Create and verify your Night Owl Protect account. If you already have an account, skip to Step 3.
Step 3: System Configuration
Once your system's hardware is connected and the app is set up on your smart device, configure your system.
Option 1: Easy Bluetooth® Wireless Setup
Note: If a TV/Monitor is connected, setup information will appear on screen. A TV/Monitor is not required but can be used for viewing.
- Log in to the Night Owl Protect app. Allow Bluetooth access if prompted.
- The app will use [Bluetooth] to find the NVR. Tap "Continue" to add the NVR to your Night Owl Protect account.
- Name your recorder.
- The app will pair to the NVR. Once finished, complete the remainder of the Startup Wizard from the app and begin viewing your cameras. Note: If the NVR is not connected to the internet, you will not be able to live view cameras from the app.
Option 2: Manual Setup (TV / Monitor)
Connecting your system and using the Night Owl Protect App is preferred for added security and convenience.
Note: We strongly recommend connecting your NVR to the internet to search for the latest firmware. Keeping firmware updated is vital for system health. If not connecting to the internet, manually upgrade firmware and register your device.
- If not already done, connect your NVR to a TV/Monitor using the provided HDMI cable. Follow the steps in "Step 1: Connecting Your System".
- You will begin the Startup Wizard on the TV/Monitor. When prompted, click "Manual Setup (not recommended)".
- Proceed through the rest of the Startup Wizard to finish setup. Once complete, click "Go to Live View" to begin viewing your cameras.
