Setup Options
Night Owl offers two primary setup methods:
Option 1: Easy Bluetooth® Wireless Setup
This is the preferred method, requiring no TV or monitor for initial setup. Configuration is completed via the Night Owl Protect app on your smart device.
Option 2: Manual Setup (TV / Monitor)
This option allows for local viewing directly on a TV or monitor. You will need to connect your DVR to a display device.
Note: Watch the DVR Hardware Setup Video on YouTube for visual guidance. Search for "Night Owl YouTube" or visit www.youtube.com/nightowlsp.
Connecting Hardware (Common Steps for Both Options):
- Ethernet Connection: Plug one end of the included Ethernet cable into the LAN port on the back of the DVR. Plug the other end into a port on your [router/network access point].
Note: Connecting to the internet via Ethernet is recommended for the best user experience.
- Camera Video/Power Cables: Connect the camera's video/power cable to the DVR's video input port. Connect the other end of this cable to the camera.
Note: Ensure [BNC connectors] are twisted and locked securely.
- Camera Power: Connect the red female power leads from the [video/power cables] to the male power splitter ends.
- DVR Power: Connect the [DVR power adapter] to the Power Input on the rear of the DVR.
- Power Source: Connect the [DVR power adapter] to a [surge protector/UPS]. Connect the [power splitter] (with cameras attached) to the [camera power adapters], and plug these into a [surge protector/UPS].
Note: Ensure the surge protector or UPS is switched ON. Some systems may beep upon booting.
Important: Before final installation, connect and test each camera locally to confirm functionality.
Specific Connections for Manual Setup (Option 2):
- HDMI Connection: Plug one end of the 6 ft. [HDMI cable] into the DVR's HDMI port. Plug the other end into your TV or monitor.
Note: To view cameras, your TV or monitor must be tuned to the same input the HDMI cable is connected to.
- USB Connection: Plug the [USB mouse] into a USB port on the back of the DVR.
Download the Night Owl Protect app from your smart device's [App Store] or [Google Play Store].
Create and verify your Night Owl Protect account. If you already have an account, you can skip this step.
Note: Setup is the same for smartphones and tablets.
For Option 1: Easy Bluetooth® Wireless Setup
- Log in to the Night Owl Protect app. Allow [Bluetooth] access if prompted.
- The app will use [Bluetooth] to find your DVR. Tap "Continue" to add the DVR to your account.
- Name your recorder (this name is for the DVR only).
- The app will pair with the DVR. Complete the remainder of the Startup Wizard directly from the app to begin viewing your cameras.
For Option 2: Manual Setup (TV / Monitor)
Note: Connecting to the internet is strongly recommended for firmware updates and system health. If not connecting to the internet, manually upgrade firmware and register your device.
- If you haven't already, connect your DVR to a TV/Monitor using the [HDMI cable] as described in Step 1.
- The Startup Wizard will begin on your TV/Monitor. When prompted, click "Manual Setup (not recommended)".
- Proceed through the Startup Wizard to finish setup. Click "Go to Live View" to start viewing your cameras.
Note: If the DVR is not connected to the internet, you will not be able to view cameras remotely via the app.
Important Information & Support
Night Owl Technical Support: For manuals, troubleshooting guides, FAQs, and video tutorials, visit Support.NightOwlSP.com. Enter your product's Series number (found on the sticker on top of the DVR) into the search bar.
Phone Support: Phone support is available only if your device is running the latest firmware, is registered (via the Night Owl Protect app or www.no-protect.com), and is powered on and accessible.
Not Connecting to the Internet: While Night Owl recommends connecting your DVR to the internet for optimal performance and features like remote viewing, you can proceed without an internet connection. However, this requires manual firmware updates for phone support, limits remote viewing capabilities, and makes password resets more complex.
