Product Overview and Components
The KRUPS IL Caffé Bistro combines coffee, espresso, and cappuccino functions in a space-saving system with an electronic programming panel. Diagrams on pages 3 and 4 illustrate various steps and components.
Key Components:
- Boiler Cap (a)
- Selector Switch (b): Espresso ☕, Off ?, Steam ?
- Swing-out Filter Holder (c)
- Glass Carafe (d, i) with Handle and Lid
- Thermostatically Controlled Warming Plate (E)
- Filter Basket (f)
- Cup Adapter (g)
- Measuring Spoon (h)
- Removable Overflow Grid (j)
- Steam Nozzle
- Perfect Froth Attachment
- Hinged Water Chamber Lid

Before You Start
Familiarize yourself with all parts. With the unit unplugged, insert the filter basket into the filter holder, fit the filter holder into the brewing head, and remove/replace the boiler cap. Turn the selector switch to its three positions and check all parts. Wash all loose parts in warm, soapy water, rinse, and dry.
It is recommended to operate the machine once without coffee using the instructions for espresso and coffee making.
CAUTION - PRESSURE
It is important to NEVER open the boiler cap or remove the filter holder while the machine is turned "On" or as long as there is pressure in the boiler. Follow these steps to ensure no pressure remains before opening:
- Turn selector switch to "0" (Off ?).
- Unplug the machine.
- Hold a pitcher with cold water under the steam nozzle and insert the nozzle into the pitcher.
- Turn the selector switch to the "steam" ? position. Continue until no more steam comes out.
- Turn the selector switch to "0" (Off ?).
- Now you can remove the boiler cap and filter holder.
If water remains in the boiler chamber, remove the glass carafe and drip tray, then turn the machine upside down to empty any remaining water.
Genuine Espresso
Espresso is a richer, stronger brew, typically served in small (2-2½ oz.) demitasse cups. The KRUPS IL Caffé Bistro, when used properly, produces a deep, dark, and delicious espresso.
Grinding Espresso Beans: For KRUPS "Fast Touch" or "Touch Top" mills, grinding time for 4 cups is approximately 16-18 seconds. Espresso requires a fine grind.
Making Espresso
- Place the machine near an electrical outlet and plug it in. Ensure the selector switch (b) is in the "0" (Off ?) position.
- Place the filter basket (f) into the filter holder (e). Fill to the desired level (marked for 2 or 4 cups).
- Fill the filter basket with ground espresso coffee. Pack lightly and clear excess coffee from the rim.
- Insert the filter holder into the brewing head, aligning the arrow on the holder with the line on the machine. Press upwards and turn firmly to the right to the "min" or "max" marking. (These markings do not indicate strength).
- Unscrew the boiler cap (a) counter-clockwise.
- Using the glass carafe, fill the boiler chamber with fresh, cold water.
- Place the boiler cap (a) back on and turn clockwise until secure.
- Place the carafe lid on the carafe (i) so the opening points towards the pouring spout.
- Position the carafe under the filter holder, ensuring the nozzle in the filter holder points through the carafe lid opening.
- To make espresso directly into cups, clip the cup adapter (g) onto the filter holder and place cups under the spouts.
- Turn the selector switch to the left (espresso ☕). The on/off indicator light will illuminate.
- After approximately 2 minutes, water will pass through the coffee, producing espresso in the carafe or cups.
- Once brewing stops, turn the machine "off" by moving the switch to "0" (Off ?). The control light will go out.
- Before removing the filter holder, ensure the boiler is not under pressure (see CAUTION - PRESSURE).
ATTENTION: Do not pack coffee tightly. Do not fill more coffee than indicated by the 4-cup marking, as this may cause clogging or overflow.
Measuring Guidelines (Water for Boiler Chamber):
- Never pour more than 12 oz. of water into the boiler chamber.
- 2 cups water yields 2 cups espresso.
- 3 cups water yields 2 cups espresso + steam for milk.
- 4 cups water yields 4 cups espresso.
- 5-5½ cups water yields 4 cups espresso + steam for milk. (5-5½ cups is the upper rim of the metal band on the carafe).
CAUTION: Never fill the boiler chamber while the machine is in the "on" position.
Cappuccino Preparation
Cappuccino is traditionally made of espresso and frothed milk. The proportion is typically 1 part espresso to 2 parts milk plus froth.
- Make espresso as described above.
- Fill a small pitcher ½ to ¾ full with fresh, cold milk and set aside.
- To make espresso, turn the machine to the "espresso" ☕ position. As soon as half the required amount of espresso is produced, turn the selector switch to "0" (Off ?). This creates enough pressure and steam for frothing milk. Frothing milk before finishing espresso prevents running out of steam.
- To froth milk, insert the steam nozzle (with Perfect Froth attachment) halfway into the milk. Turn the selector switch to the "steam" ? position. Froth for approximately 45-60 seconds, depending on desired froth and milk type.
- After frothing, set milk aside to settle.
- Turn the selector switch back to the "espresso" ☕ position to finish making espresso.
- Pour espresso into a cup (at least 5 oz capacity). Add steamed milk and spoon on frothed milk.
ATTENTION: Do not bring milk to a boil. Do not let the Perfect Froth attachment touch the bottom of the pitcher.
Steam Only: To froth milk only, fill the glass carafe with water up to the "steam" ? mark. Turn the selector switch to the "steam" ? position. Place a cup under the steam nozzle to collect escaping water. As soon as steam appears, move the switch to "0" (Off ?). Then follow steps 2-7 for frothing.
ATTENTION: The top closure of the Perfect Froth attachment has a fine hole that draws air into the milk. If this hole gets clogged, "Perfect Froth" will not work properly. Never immerse the top closure in milk or froth.
Cleaning
Before cleaning, turn "off" the machine, unplug it, and allow it to cool down.
- Filter basket, carafe, carafe lid, and overflow grid can be washed in the dishwasher's upper rack.
- Wipe the machine body with a damp cloth. Never immerse the body in water or other liquid.
- Clean the brewing head with a damp cloth.
- If water remains in the boiler chamber, let the machine cool, remove parts, and empty by turning upside down.
Cleaning The Steam Nozzle:
Clean the steam nozzle each time after use. If clogged, unscrew the tip, remove particles with a sewing needle, and rinse. Replace tip securely. Wipe nozzle with a wet cloth near the tip and briefly turn the selector switch to "steam" ? to flush residue.
Cleaning The Perfect Froth Attachment:
Rinse all parts in warm water. If the small suction opening is clogged, use a fine needle.
Cleaning The Drip Tray:
Remove the overflow grid (j) for cleaning.
Decalcifying
Periodic decalcifying is recommended, especially in areas with hard water or frequent use, to remove calcium deposits that slow brewing time.
When To Decalcify:
An obvious slowdown in brewing time indicates a need for decalcifying.
How To Decalcify:
- Turn machine "off" and unplug. Allow to cool.
- Remove filter holder, glass carafe, and overflow grid.
- Turn machine completely upside down. Use a flat blade screwdriver to remove the brewing head sieve by turning clockwise.
- Turn machine upright and reinsert overflow grid.
- Dissolve decalcifying agent in 4 cups of water. Pour into the boiler chamber and secure the boiler cap.
- Place the glass carafe (without lid) under the brewing head.
- Turn the selector switch to the "espresso" ☕ position so the solution passes through the system into the carafe.
- Repeat with clean, cold water to remove all remaining solution. Clean twice if necessary.

Preparing Coffee:
Before first use, rinse the coffee maker once or twice with water only, without ground coffee.
- Ensure the water chamber is empty.
- The lid of the glass carafe must be properly positioned.
- Ensure the swivel filter is closed properly during brewing.
Putting in The Ground Coffee:
- Swing out the swivel filter (C) and insert a paper filter (KRUPS size 4 recommended). Ensure the seam points towards the filter holder handle.
- Put ground coffee into the filter holder (suggested: one level KRUPS measuring spoon per cup). Adjust to taste. Avoid powder-like consistency.
- Close the swivel filter securely.
ATTENTION: Ensure the filter paper does not fold over when closing the swivel filter, as this can lead to weak coffee.
Filling The Water Chamber:
- Open the hinged water chamber lid. Pour in the desired quantity of water. (Add slightly more water than the desired amount of coffee, as some water is absorbed by the grounds).
- Place the glass carafe with lid in position on the warming plate.
- Turn "on" your "IL Caffé Bistro" using the "On/Off" button (ON). The indicator light will illuminate, showing brewing has begun.
AUTO SHUT OFF AND WARM KEEPING:
The machine has an automatic shut-off feature that turns it off 2 hours after brewing begins. The red indicator light goes out. To keep coffee warm longer, push the "On/Off" button again.
Benefits: Helps prevent coffee from losing flavor, energy saving, safety feature.
SETTING "WAKE-UP" TIME:
This feature allows you to enjoy fresh coffee at a pre-selected time within a 24-hour period, after setting the digital clock.
- Press the program button. A green light indicates programming is ready.
- Press "h" (hour) and "m" (minute) buttons to set the desired program time. The LED clock will return to regular time after a few seconds.
The "Wake-Up" time is stored in memory. To check, press the program button; the time will display for a few seconds. To change, repeat the process.
Preparing "Wake-Up" Coffee:
- Set the "Wake-Up" time.
- Put in ground coffee.
- Fill water chamber.
- Place carafe on warming plate.
- Press the "Auto" button (AUTO). The red light will illuminate.
- At the programmed time, the auto light turns off, and the "On/Off" light illuminates, indicating brewing has begun.
In this mode, coffee is kept warm for two hours before the machine shuts off automatically.
Stop'N Serve Feature:
This feature automatically stops the flow of brewed coffee if the glass carafe is removed from the warming plate during brewing. You have about 20 seconds to reinsert the carafe. The brewing process resumes.
CAUTION: If coffee drips onto the warming plate after carafe removal, it may indicate a missing/defective seal in the filter holder or too much ground coffee causing overflow. Contact KRUPS Consumer Service if this occurs.
POWER FAILURE BACK-UP:
An electronic device stores all functions for up to 6 seconds in case of power surges or failures. If the power failure lasts longer than 6 seconds, the machine will switch off completely. When power returns, the clock time and programmed settings may need to be reset.
