Congratulations!

You have purchased a DigiTech digital effect pedal.

Digital pedals have limited battery life due to constant power draw. For demonstration and practice, battery use is suggested.

If the LED brightness changes or the pedal fails to switch between Bypass and Effect, replace the 9-Volt alkaline battery or visit a DigiTech dealer for a power adapter.

Introduction

The DigiTech HardWire series offers significant improvements in guitar effects pedals, providing superior tone and control. Features include true bypass and high voltage operation, making them essential for players prioritizing sound quality and performance.

Included Items:

  • HardWire DL-8 Delay/Looper
  • StompLock™
  • Foot Switch Glow Sticker
  • Hook-and-loop Pedalboard Pad
  • Online Warranty Registration Information Card

Pedal Interface

The DL-8 features the following controls and connections:

  • 1. Level Knob: Controls the delay level. Clockwise increases, counter-clockwise decreases. For Reverse Delay, it controls the effect's output level.
  • 2. DC Adapter Jack: Connect the optional Harman power supply here. Ensure it matches your area's mains line voltage.
  • 3. Repeats Knob: Controls the number of delay repeats. Clockwise increases, counter-clockwise decreases. Turning to maximum engages repeat-hold (except for MODULATED, ANALOG, LO FI, SLAPBACK, and TAPE types). This knob is disabled when LOOP is selected.
  • 4. Time Knob: Controls the delay time based on the TYPE knob selection. Minimum position is the shortest time, maximum is the longest. Time can be extended using the Tap Tempo feature. This knob is disabled when Tap Tempo or LOOP is active.
  • 5. Type Knob: Selects delay types and time ranges:
    • 0.5 Seconds: 10 to 500 ms
    • 1 Second: 500 ms to 1 second
    • 2 Seconds: 1 to 2 seconds
    • 8 Seconds: 2 to 8 seconds
    • REVERSE*: Repeats play backward.
    • MODULATED*: Delay with chorused repeats.
    • ANALOG*: Vintage bucket brigade analog delay.
    • SLAPBACK: 80 to 150 ms
    • LO FI*: Low-fidelity delay with limited bandwidth.
    • TAPE*: Classic tube tape echo.
    • LOOP: Creates infinite stereo loops up to 20 seconds.

*ANALOG Time knob range is 35 ms - 1 second. TAPE, MODULATED, and LO FI Time knob ranges are 100 ms - 1 second. REVERSE Time knob range is 500 ms - 4 seconds. Use Tap Tempo to extend time beyond these ranges.

  • 6. Input 1 (Mono): Connect your instrument, another pedal, or an amp effects send. Signals are heard at both outputs if only Input 1 is used. This jack enables battery power. Disconnect the cable when not in use to conserve battery life.
  • 7. Input 2: Connect a second input for stereo operation. Inputs 1 and 2 are processed separately for true stereo separation.
  • 8. Foot Switch Release Pins: Spring-loaded pins that hold the Foot Switch. See page 16 for battery access and page 12 for Tails Switch settings.
  • 9. Indicator LED: Lights when the effect is on. Dims when battery power is low (approximately 15 minutes before depletion), providing a warning.
  • 10. Foot Switch: Turns the effect on/off. Also used for Tap Tempo and arming Loop recording.
  • 11. Output 1 (Mono): Connect to a single guitar amplifier, another pedal input, or amp effects return.
  • 12. Output 2: Connect to a second guitar amplifier. If only Input 1 is connected and both outputs are used, delays (except MODULATED, SLAPBACK, REVERSE, LOOP) create ping pong effects, alternating between outputs.

NOTE: Use unbalanced mono instrument cables only.

Tap Tempo Delay

The DL-8's Foot Switch can be used to set the delay time via Tap Tempo during live performance.

To access Tap Tempo:

  1. While the delay effect is bypassed, press and hold the Foot Switch for 3 seconds. The effect turns on, and the Indicator LED lights solid RED. After 3 seconds, the LED begins flashing GREEN, indicating Tap Tempo mode is active. The LED flashes at the current delay time's duration.
  2. Tap the Foot Switch at least two times to set a new delay time. The last two tap intervals determine the delay time. The TIME knob is disabled while Tap Tempo is active, and the delay cannot be bypassed until Tap Tempo is exited.

To exit Tap Tempo:

Press and hold the Foot Switch for 3 seconds until the Indicator LED stops flashing and lights solid RED again. The tapped delay time remains active until the delay type is changed or the TIME knob is used.

Loop Delay

The LOOP delay type creates an infinite stereo delay loop up to 20 seconds long. Overdubs can be added to an existing loop.

To use the Loop type:

  1. Select LOOP using the Type knob.
  2. Press and hold the Foot Switch. The Indicator LED begins flashing RED, indicating the loop is ready for recording.
  3. While holding the Foot Switch, begin playing your instrument. The Indicator LED lights solid RED, indicating recording is in progress.
  4. When you finish your passage, release the Foot Switch. The Indicator LED lights solid GREEN, and the recorded passage plays back in an infinite loop.
  5. To add overdubs, press and hold the Foot Switch at any time and begin playing. The Indicator LED lights solid YELLOW while recording and adding to the loop.
  6. To stop the loop, quickly press the Foot Switch. This puts the pedal into Bypass, turns off the Indicator LED, stops the loop, and clears the memory.

Tails Switch

The DL-8 features a switch that allows delay repeats to continue after the effect is bypassed.

  • When the Tails Switch is set to ON, the DL-8 does not use true hardwire bypass, and delay repeats continue to be heard.
  • When the Tails Switch is set to OFF, the DL-8 uses true hardwire bypass, and delay repeats are cut off immediately upon bypass.

The Tails Switch is located under the pedal's Foot Switch. Access it by pressing one of the Foot Switch Release Pins using the tip of a 1/4" guitar cable plug. Once the Foot Switch is removed, the switch is visible inside the chassis. Slide the switch to the left to turn Tails ON and to the right to turn Tails OFF.

[Diagram Description: A close-up view shows the Tails Switch with a slider. The slider is shown in the 'ON' position (left) and the 'OFF' position (right). Arrows indicate 'Tails On' to the left and 'Tails Off' to the right.]

Amplifier Setup

NOTE: If the amp effects loop has a mix control, set the mix to 100% full wet.

Battery Operation

If the battery power is depleted, HardWire pedals automatically switch into bypass, eliminating the need to remove them from the pedal chain.

To replace the battery:

  1. Using the tip of a 1/4" guitar cable, push in one of the Release Pins on either side of the Foot Switch and remove it from the pedal chassis.
  2. Remove the battery from the battery compartment and disconnect the battery cable.
  3. Connect a new battery to the battery cable and place it in the compartment. Ensure the battery cable does not interfere with the spring or pedal switch arm.
  4. Align one hole of the Foot Switch over its corresponding pin.
  5. Push the opposite pin in and lower the other side of the Foot Switch into place over the depressed pin. Release the pin. Both Release Pins should be flush with the outer side of the pedal when properly fastened.
