Step 1: Prepare Door and Check Dimensions
If drilling a new door, use the supplied template and the complete door drilling instructions available at kwikset.com/doorprep.
Check door dimensions:
- Backset: 2-3/8" (60 mm) or 2-3/4" (70 mm)
- Door thickness: 1-3/4" - 2-1/4"* (44 mm - 57 mm*)
- Cross bore: 2-1/8" (54 mm)
- Edge bore: 1" (25 mm)
- Hole spacing: 5-1/2" (140 mm)
*Call Kwikset to order a service kit for 2-1/4" (57 mm) thick doors.
Step 2: Confirm Bottom Hole Location
A. Fold the supplied template along the fold line and place it on the exterior side of your door so that the holes in the template align with the holes in your door.
B. If you already have the bottom hole drilled in your door, confirm that its location falls between the highest and lowest holes at the bottom of the template. If it does not fall within this range, drill a new hole in step 3. If the bottom hole is not drilled, use the template to mark the location of the new hole on your door. Make sure it is aligned with the other holes in the door. Drill a new hole in step 3 at the 9-1/8" (232 mm) mark on the template.
Step 3: Drill New Bottom Hole (if needed)
Drill a new hole through the door with a 7/16" (11.11 mm) drill bit.
Step 4: Extend the Top Latch Bolt
Ensure the curve is on the bottom of the latch. Rotate the latch bolt mechanism 180° if necessary.
Step 5: Adjust the Backset of the Top Latch (if needed)
A. Hold the latch in front of the door hole, with the latch case flush against the door edge.
B. If the D-shaped hole is centered in the door hole, no adjustment is required. Proceed to step 6. If the D-shaped hole is NOT centered, adjust the latch. See "Latch Adjustment" (step 5C).
C. Latch Adjustment: Rotate the front of the latch to extend it. If the D-shaped hole is not centered, grasp the pin on both sides of the latch and move it to the longer setting.
Step 6: Install the Top Latch
A. Install the backplate. Ensure the plate snaps into place. Pull the plate to test for a tight fit. The backplate has 2 tabs.
B. Install the latch into the top hole on the door.
C. Install the faceplate and secure with screws ([Part E2] x2).
Step 7: Adjust the Backset of the Bottom Latch (if needed)
A. Hold the BOTTOM latch in front of the door hole, with the latch face flush against the door edge.
B. If the semicircular hole is centered in the door hole, no adjustment is required. Proceed to step 8. If the semicircular hole is NOT centered, adjust the latch. See "Latch Adjustment" (step 7C).
C. Latch Adjustment: Ensure the curve is on the bottom of the latch. Grasp the pin on both sides of the latch and move it to the longer setting.
Step 8: Install the Bottom Latch
A. Insert the latch into the bottom hole. The slant of the bolt faces the direction that the door closes.
B. Secure with screws ([Part E2] x2).
Step 9: Install Deadbolt
A. Locate the mounting screws ([Part J]) and keep them within reach.
B. Make sure the interior turnpiece is vertical.
C. The mounting plate ([Part H]) should be pre-installed on the interior. If removed, re-install.
D. Insert the interior torque blade ([Part H]) through the D-shaped hole in the latch. Make sure the latch bolt is fully extended.
E. Insert the EXTERIOR torque blade ([Part G]) into the turnpiece hole. Ensure the curve faces up.
F. Secure the deadbolt with mounting screws ([Part J] x2). Make sure the edges of the deadbolt are parallel to the door edge.
Troubleshooting
If the screws are difficult to tighten, make sure the latch is installed correctly.
If the turnpiece does not rotate, make sure the turnpiece is vertical, the latch bolt is extended, and the curve of the exterior torque blade faces up.
Step 10: Install Handleset
A. Hold the handleset on the exterior side of the door and make sure the round edge of the spindle ([Part M]) faces the door edge.
B. Insert the spindle ([Part M]) into the semicircular hole in the bottom latch, and insert the bottom post through the bottom hole in the door. Press the latch bolt to insert the spindle. The post is adjustable and can be moved to any position within the slot.
C. Secure the handleset with the washer ([Part P]), screw ([Part N1]), and screw cover ([Part N2]).
Troubleshooting
If adjustment is required, pull and rotate the spindle.
Step 11: Install Lever or Knob
Option 1 (Visible Screws)
A. Loosen the pre-installed set screw ([Part T]) (if there is one).
B. Install lever/knob base ([Part R]). Make sure the edges of the lever base are parallel to the door edge.
C. Install lever/knob ([Part S]). The lever handle faces away from the door edge.
D. Tighten the pre-installed set screw ([Part T]).
Option 2 (Hidden Screws)
A. Loosen the pre-installed set screw.
B. Install lever base ([Part W]). Pull on paper insert to separate rose cover ([Part U]) and lever base.
C. Install rose cover ([Part U]). Make sure the edges of the lever base are parallel to the door edge.
D. Install lever ([Part V]). The lever handle faces away from the door edge.
E. Tighten the pre-installed set screw.
Step 12: Install Strikes
A. Make sure the hole for the top strike is drilled at a minimum of 1" (25 mm) deep.
B. The longer screws ([Part F1], 3"/76mm), must be used to maintain highest security. Install longer screws closest to the door jamb.
C. Install strikes and secure with screws ([Part F1] x2, [Part F3] x2, [Part E1] x2).
D. Close the door and test the handleset operation. If the latch is loose in the strike, adjust the strike tab so it grips the latch bolt better when the door is closed.
Step 13: Re-key Deadbolt (if needed)
Re-key the lock to work with your existing key. Refer to supplied SmartKey Re-Key instructions.
Note: The screws and plastic components used to secure the lock to the packaging are not needed for lock installation.
