Introduction
Thank you for choosing the Extech Model UV505 UVA-UVB Light Meter. This instrument measures UVA-UVB ultraviolet light within the 290 to 390 nm wavelength range. General Safety
Please read the entire user manual before operating this instrument. Use the meter only as described and do not attempt to repair or open the meter's housing. Do not allow children to handle the meter or the protective cap. Dispose of batteries and the meter responsibly and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
- To prevent damage to this precision instrument, do not attempt to take measurements outside the ranges specified in this manual.
- Do not use this meter in direct sunlight or in any location where the temperature and/or humidity are excessively high.
- Do not immerse the meter in liquid.
UV Safety Information
Exercise extreme caution when using this meter to test an ultraviolet light source. Exposure to UV radiation can be dangerous depending on the duration of exposure, the intensity of the radiation, the wavelength, and each individual's sensitivity to ultraviolet rays.
Device Description
The Extech UV505 Light Meter consists of the following parts:
Front Panel:
- 1. Photosensitive sensor (protective cap not shown)
- 2. LCD screen
- 3. Backlight button
- 4. Zero button
- 5. Power ON/OFF button
- 6. Measurement unit selection button
- 7. Display Data Hold button
Note: The battery compartment and tripod mount are located on the rear of the meter.
LCD Screen Description
The LCD screen displays the following information:
- 1. Measurement reading
- 2. Data Hold indicator
- 3. Zero Mode indicator
- 4. Low battery indicator ?
- 5. Measurement unit (µW/cm² or mW/cm²)
Button Descriptions

⚡ [Power] | Press to turn the meter ON or OFF. |
?️ [Hold] | Press to lock/unlock the displayed measurement on the screen. |
⚖️ [Unit] | Briefly press to toggle between µW/cm² and mW/cm². |
? [Backlight] | Briefly press to activate the backlight. The backlight automatically turns off after 10 seconds. |
0️⃣ [Zero] | With the protective cap on the sensor, press to zero the display. Press again to exit zero mode. |
Operation
Powering On/Off
Briefly press the power button ⚡ to turn the meter ON or OFF. If the LCD does not light up, check the battery status in the battery compartment on the rear of the meter. The meter automatically powers off after 15 minutes of inactivity.
Zeroing the Sensor
With the protective cap fitted, briefly press the 0️⃣ [Zero] button to zero the display before taking measurements. The "ZERO" indicator will appear on the display while the meter zeros. Press the 0️⃣ [Zero] button again to exit this mode, and the "ZERO" indicator will disappear.
Taking Measurements
Remove the sensor cap, then point the photosensitive sensor towards the ultraviolet light source. View the measurement displayed on the screen.
Selecting Range and Unit
Briefly press the ⚖️ [Unit] button to toggle between ranges (mW/cm² and µW/cm²). The lower display area shows the selected range.
Data Hold
Briefly press the ?️ [Hold] button to lock or unlock a measurement on the screen.
Backlight
The LCD is equipped with a backlight to facilitate viewing, especially in dimly lit areas. Briefly press the ? [Backlight] button to activate it. The backlight automatically turns off after 10 seconds.
Measurement Considerations
- Keep the light sensor clean and free of scratches. Remove dust by gently wiping with a dry, lint-free cloth.
- Avoid any reflections or shadows on the sensor during measurements.
- For optimal accuracy, repeat measurements several times to ensure the light source has remained stable.
Maintenance
Battery Replacement
- Turn the meter OFF.
- Press and hold the lock button located above the battery compartment (on the rear of the meter), then slide the battery compartment cover downwards.
- Replace the two 1.5V AAA batteries, observing polarity. Reassemble the meter before use.
Battery Safety Guidelines: Please dispose of batteries responsibly. Never incinerate batteries, as they may explode or leak. If you do not intend to use the meter for 60 days or more, remove the batteries and store them separately.
Never dispose of used or rechargeable batteries with household waste. As consumers, users are legally required to take used batteries to an appropriate waste collection site, to the point of sale where the batteries were purchased, or to any location selling batteries.
Disposal
Do not dispose of this meter with household waste. The user is obligated to return end-of-life devices to an approved collection point for the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment. ♻️
Cleaning and Storage
Wipe the meter's casing from time to time with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasive products or solvents. Remove debris and dust from the sensor using a dry, lint-free dust cloth. Avoid any material that could scratch the sensor's surface.
