Installing Your Dimmer (Single-Pole)
Installation for Lights with One Wall Switch (Single-Pole)
This guide covers single-pole installations (one wall switch controlling a light). For 3-way switch installations (two or more switches controlling a light, like stair lights), please visit www.casetawireless.com/3way for complete instructions and videos.
Important Safety Warning
WARNING: SHOCK HAZARD. May result in serious injury or death. Turn off power at circuit breaker or fuse before installing.
Installation Steps
- Step 1: Turn Power Off.
Turn power off at the circuit breaker.
[Visual Description: Icon of a circuit breaker with the switch in the 'OFF' position.]
- Step 2: Remove Existing Switch.
Remove the wallplate from the existing switch. Pull the switch away from the wall and disconnect all three wires from it.
[Visual Description: Shows removing a wallplate, then pulling out an old switch from the wall and disconnecting wires.]
- Step 3: Remove Side Sections (If Necessary).
For dimmers at the end of a gang (next to an open space or another device), do not remove the outside side sections. For dimmers installed in the middle of a gang, remove the inside side sections. If your switch has more than 3 wires, consult the video at www.casetawireless.com/3way.
[Visual Description: Diagrams showing how to bend and break off side sections of the dimmer. One diagram shows a dimmer with no side sections removed, one with one side removed, and one with both sides removed. Another shows a dimmer at the end of a gang where outside sections are not removed.]
- Step 4: Connect the Dimmer.
Connect the dimmer wires to the wallbox wires using wire connectors:
- Connect the bare copper (or green) "ground" wire from the wallbox to the green wire on the dimmer using a wire connector.
- Connect one of the remaining wires from the wallbox to one of the remaining wires on the dimmer using a second wire connector.
- Connect the last wire from the wallbox to the last wire on the dimmer using a third wire connector.
[Visual Description: Diagram illustrating wire connections. Green wire to green wire, and the other two wires connected between the dimmer and the wallbox wires.]
- Step 5: Mount the Dimmer.
Secure the dimmer into the wallbox using the provided screws.
[Visual Description: Dimmer being screwed into the wallbox.]
- Step 6: Attach the Wallplate.
Attach the adapter to the dimmer using the provided screws and snap on the wallplate. If you installed the dimmer next to other dimmers or switches, ensure the wallplate has the correct number of openings.
[Visual Description: Shows attaching an adapter to the dimmer, then snapping the wallplate onto the adapter.]
- Step 7: Turn Power On.
Turn power back on at the circuit breaker.
[Visual Description: Icon of a circuit breaker with the switch in the 'ON' position.]
Important Notes on Installation
- For indoor use only.
- Operate between 32°F (0°C) and 104°F (40°C).
Maximum Wattage Derating Chart
Removing side sections reduces the dimmer's maximum wattage rating. See the chart below for maximum wattage information:
Side sections removed | LED & CFL | Incandescent & Halogen |
---|---|---|
None | 150 W | 600 W |
1 side | 150 W | 500 W |
2 sides | 150 W | 400 W |
*For maximum wattage information when mixing light bulb types, see www.casetawireless.com/ganging.
