Installing Your Dimmer
Important Note:
This guide covers single-pole installation (one wall switch). For 3-way switch applications (two or more switches), visit www.casetawireless.com/3way for instructions and videos.
[Warning] SHOCK HAZARD. May result in serious injury or death. Turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse before installing.
Step 1: Turn Power Off
Turn off power at the circuit breaker.
Step 2: Remove Existing Switch
Remove the wallplate from the existing switch. Unscrew and pull the switch away from the wall. Disconnect all wires from the switch. [Note: If your switch has more than 3 wires, consult www.casetawireless.com/3way.]
Step 3: Remove Side Sections (if necessary)
For dimmers installed next to other devices in a multi-gang box:
- Dimmer at the end of a gang: Do not remove outside side sections.
- Dimmer in the middle: Remove inside side sections.
- Dimmer in a 3-gang box: Remove all side sections.
Maximum Wattage Derating Chart (120 V~ 50/60 Hz):
Side sections removed | LED & CFL | Incandescent & Halogen |
---|---|---|
None | 150 W | 600 W |
1 side | 150 W | 500 W |
2 sides | 150 W | 400 W |
[Note: For mixing bulb types, see www.casetawireless.com/ganging.]
Step 4: Connect the Dimmer
Connect wires using wire connectors:
- Connect the bare copper (or green) "ground" wire from the wallbox to the green wire on the dimmer.
- Connect one of the remaining wallbox wires to one of the remaining dimmer wires.
- Connect the last wallbox wire to the last dimmer wire.
Step 5: Mount the Dimmer
Use the provided screws to attach the dimmer to the wallbox.
Step 6: Attach the Wallplate
Attach the adapter to the dimmer using the provided screws, then snap on the wallplate. If installing next to other devices, ensure the wallplate has the correct number of openings.
Step 7: Turn Power On
Turn power back on at the circuit breaker.
Using Your Caséta by Lutron Kit
You can control your lights using a smartphone/tablet (requires a hub, sold separately) or without a smartphone/tablet.
With a Smartphone or Tablet (Hub Required)
- Download the "Lutron App" from your app store.
- Launch the Lutron app.
- Use the Lutron app to complete all remaining setup steps, including adding devices like Pico remotes and dimmers. The app guides you through setup.
[Note: If using with another manufacturer's hub, follow their setup instructions.]
Without a Smartphone or Tablet (Hub Not Required)
This method focuses on pairing the dimmer and Pico remote control.
Pairing the Dimmer and Pico Remote Control:
- On the dimmer: Press and hold the "off" button for 6 seconds until the LEDs start blinking.
- On the Pico remote: Press and hold the "off" button for 6 seconds until the lights flash 3 times.
- Repeat these steps to pair additional Pico remote controls.
Changing the Favorite Light Level (Optional)
The round "favorite" button on the Pico remote can recall a saved light level. The default is 50%, but you can set your preferred level:
- Set the desired light level on the dimmer.
- On the Pico remote: Press and hold the "favorite" button for 6 seconds until the LEDs blink twice. The new favorite level is now saved.
Using Your Controls
Pico Remote Control:
- On: Turns lights on.
- Off: Turns lights off.
- Favorite: Recalls a saved light level.
- Brighter: Increases light level.
- Darker: Decreases light level.
In-Wall Dimmer:
- On/Off Button: Toggles lights on/off.
- Dimmer Rocker: Adjusts light level (slide up for brighter, down for darker).
- FASS (Front Accessible Service Switch): Pull out the FASS switch to safely remove power at the light socket for bulb replacement. Push it back in to restore power.
Troubleshooting
Symptoms and Solutions:
- Light does not turn on or dimmer LEDs do not light up:
- Check if light bulbs are burned out.
- Ensure the circuit breaker is ON and not tripped.
- Verify the light is properly installed.
- Check for wiring errors.
- Make sure the FASS switch on the dimmer is in the ON position.
- Light does not respond to Pico remote control:
- Confirm the dimmer is paired with the Pico remote (see "Pairing" section).
- Ensure the dimmer is not already at the light level being sent by the remote.
- Check that the Pico remote is within the 30 ft (9 m) operating range.
- Replace the Pico remote's battery if it is low or installed incorrectly.
- Bulbs turn off while being dimmed, turn on at high level but not low, or flicker/flash at low levels:
- Verify bulbs are marked "dimmable."
- Visit www.casetawireless.com/lowend for information on adjusting the dimmer for optimal bulb performance.
