Principle of Operation
The Aprilaire Model 1850 dehumidifies air by passing it over an evaporator coil. This process cools the air below its dew point, causing moisture to condense and be removed as water. The collected moisture is drained away. The air is then reheated in the condenser coil before exiting the unit. Dehumidification cycles on and off based on the set point, with periodic sampling to determine the need for operation.
Application
The Aprilaire Model 1850 is ideal for smaller homes, townhomes, condominiums, and crawlspaces, providing effective humidity control.
Ventilation Feature
The Model 1850 includes a fresh air intake capability. This feature helps dilute stale air and pollutants, and can reduce humidity during winter months. Fresh air is introduced through a 6-inch round duct with a normally closed damper. The unit's controls allow for adjustment of the fresh air intake amount.
Installation Options
The Aprilaire Model 1850 can be installed in horizontal or vertical applications. The following are common installation configurations:
Main Return to Main Return - RECOMMENDED
This diagram illustrates an installation where the dehumidifier is connected between the main return duct and the main return duct, often used when a dedicated supply duct is unavailable. Air is drawn from the return duct, processed by the dehumidifier, and returned to the same return duct. This ensures proper mixing of dehumidified air with the home's air circulation system. This setup is suitable for basements, attics, and crawl spaces.
Description: This application is recommended when a supply duct is not available. Air is pulled from the return duct, dehumidified, and returned to the return duct. This method assures that the dehumidified air is mixed with the rest of the air in the duct before it re-enters the house. It is commonly used in basements, attics, and crawl spaces.
Dedicated Return to Main Supply or Dedicated Return to A/C Return
This diagram shows an installation where a dedicated return grille pulls air, which is then dehumidified and sent to either the main supply plenum or the A/C return. This is an option when a standard return or supply duct is not readily available.
Description: This application can be used when a return or supply duct is not available. Air is pulled through a dedicated return grille, dehumidified, and returned to the supply plenum or return.
Dedicated A/C Return to A/C Return
This diagram depicts an installation for homes without existing ductwork. Air is drawn from the A/C return, dehumidified, and then returned to the A/C return. The dehumidifier can be placed in a closet, mechanical room, or unfinished area and ducted into a finished room to address moisture issues in specific zones.
Description: This application is for homes without duct work. It dries a specific area that has a moisture issue. The dehumidifier can be located in a closet, mechanical room, or unfinished area and ducted into a finished room.
Main Return to Main Supply
This diagram illustrates an installation where air is drawn from the main return duct, dehumidified, and then discharged into the main supply plenum. This configuration is suitable for basements, attics, and equipment closets.
Description: Air is pulled from the return duct, dehumidified, and returned to the supply plenum. This application is used in basements, attics, and equipment closets.
