Critical Installation Requirements

Please verify that your installation meets all of these CRITICAL requirements:

A. Fireplace Heat Limitation

MantelMount is designed for use only with decorative fireplaces that are not the primary heat source for a house. Temperature at the front edge of mantle should never exceed 110° F (43° C).

Diagram description: A fireplace with a mantle. A thermometer icon shows 110°F MAX near the front edge of the mantle.

B. Wall Structure Requirements

Wall must be WOOD STUD FRAME only. There must be at least 2 studs available for mounting. Wall covering must not exceed 5/8 inch thick.

For other types of walls or other types of installations please visit the FAQ section at www.MantelMount.com.

Diagram description: A wall section showing two vertical studs labeled '2 STUDS'.

C. Mantle Extension Limit

Mantle must not extend from mounting surface more than 19 inches (22 inches for non-recessed installations). MantelMount can not extend past a mantel larger than 19 inches. Larger mantels will also reduce the amount of side-to-side swivel.

Diagram description: A fireplace mantle showing a maximum extension of '19 inches MAXIMUM' from the wall.

D. Television Requirements

  1. Weight must be below 125 pounds (56 Kg).
  2. Screen size larger than 50 diagonal inches.
  3. Mounting screw holes are VESA compliant.

For non-VESA hole patterns, please visit the FAQ section at www.MantelMount.com.

Diagram description: An illustration of a TV with text 'TELEVISION OWNER'S MANUAL' and 'WEIGHT: up to 125 POUNDS'. It also shows VESA dimensions (Width: 200-600mm, Height: 100-600mm) and indicates 'larger than 50"'.

E. Vertical Clearance Requirements

The space above the mantle must be taller than the TV. The required space depends on how far out the mantle extends. Refer to the chart below and add this additional height to the TV height to determine if space is tall enough. TV height must include the height of the Sound Bar if one is being used.

If mantle extends: Required Clearance:
Less than 10 inches Add 5 inches
10 - 12 inches Add 6 inches
12 - 14 inches Add 8 inches
14 - 17 inches Add 11 inches
17 - 19 inches Add 14 inches

Diagram description: A side view showing 'Space height' above 'TV height', with 'Mantle Extends' indicating the depth of the mantle from the wall.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Determine TV Back Type

Use a Vertical Brace {27} to determine if your television is a flat back or an irregular back. An irregular back will require spacers and longer screws to fill any spaces between the Vertical Brace and the TV. The Braces must be parallel to your television screen.

Diagram description: Two illustrations showing 'Flat Back' and 'Irregular Back' TV mounting surfaces, indicating where 'Spacers' might be needed for irregular backs.

Step 2: Select TV Screws and Spacers

Choose the correct screw diameter and length for the TV. Hand-thread screw combination into the TV to ensure there is adequate thread engagement without hitting the bottom of threaded inserts. Use only the minimum amount of spacers (if required).

Diagram description: An illustration showing a screw going into a TV threaded insert, with text indicating 'Must leave a gap in threaded TV insert' and '7-10 threads minimum engagement'.

CAUTION: Do Not use screws that are too long for the threaded inserts of Television. This can damage internal components.

Step 3: Possible Screw Combinations

Possible screw combinations are shown with maximum spacer usage (if spacers are required) for M5, M6, and M8 screw sizes.

Diagram description: Three rows of screw and spacer combinations labeled M5, M6, and M8, showing different screw lengths and the use of spacers {12}.

Step 4: Vertical Brace Placement Relative to Lift Housing

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The Vertical Braces {27} are a fixed distance (8 inches) higher than the bottom of the Lift Housing {30}. Always mount the Vertical Braces at least 8 inches up from the bottom of the TV so that the TV will hide the mount when it's in the UP position.

If you want to locate the TV at a specific height, you can use this relationship to calculate the exact location for the Lift Housing {30} on the wall. Simply subtract 8 inches from the distance you end up with when you attach everything to the TV - including a sound bar if one is attached.

EXAMPLE: If the Vertical Braces {27} are 10 inches above the bottom of the TV, then the edge of the Lift Housing {30} will be: (10 - 8 =) 2 inches higher on the wall than the TV.

Diagram description: A side view showing the relationship between the Vertical Braces {27} and the Lift Housing {30}. It indicates that the Vertical Braces {27} should be 'Should be more than 8 INCHES' above the TV bottom, and the Lift Housing {30} is 'Fixed 8 INCHES' higher than the bottom of the Vertical Braces {27}.

Step 5: Mounting Brace Extenders

The Vertical Braces {27} are always mounted higher than the bottom of the TV. However, the Brace Extenders {28} will be mounted one of two ways:

  • Without a Sound Bar, if needed: The Brace Extenders are installed slightly above the bottom of the TV. Use the Extenders for holes that are low on the TV.
  • With a Sound Bar: The Brace Extenders are installed below the TV with enough room to install the Sound Bar onto the Horizontal Brace {29}.

Diagram description: Two illustrations showing the placement of Vertical Braces {27} and Brace Extenders {28}. One shows Extenders above the TV bottom for 'Without Sound Bar', and the other shows Extenders below the TV bottom for 'With Sound Bar' to accommodate a soundbar on the Horizontal Brace {29}. It notes 'Vertical Braces: Always higher than the bottom of the TV'.

Step 6: Attaching Vertical Braces to TV

Attach the Vertical Braces {27} to the TV so the bottoms of the Vertical Braces are at least eight inches higher than the bottom of the TV (so that the TV hides the mount housing).

NOTE: If all the screws for the back of the TV can fit into the TV Vertical Braces {27}, and a soundbar is not being used, then the Brace Extenders {28} do not need to be installed.

Diagram description: A rear view of a TV showing Vertical Braces {27} attached, with a measurement indicating '8-11 INCHES' (less if a Soundbar is used) from the bottom of the braces to the bottom of the TV.

Step 7: Attaching Horizontal Brace and Extenders

Attach the TV Horizontal Brace {29} with Screws {18} if a soundbar is used. Each Extender {28} must be slid on from the outer ends because there are thread inserts blocking the center of the Brace. Attach the Extenders to the Vertical Braces using Screws {19} and Nuts {16}. Soundbar Wings {59} are optional.

Diagram description: Illustrations showing the attachment of the Horizontal Brace {29} to the Extenders {28} using screws {18}, and then attaching the Extenders {28} to the Vertical Braces {27} using screws {19} and nuts {16}. Soundbar Wings {59} are shown as optional.

Step 8: Measure Distance for Housing Placement

Measure the distance from the bottom of the Vertical Braces {27} (not the Extenders) to the bottom of the television or Sound Bar. Write down this distance to use in Step 9.

Diagram description: A side view showing measurements from the 'Bottom of Vertical Brace' to the 'Bottom of TV' or 'Bottom of Sound Bar', indicating a range of '8 to 11 INCHES' or 'MORE THAN 8 INCHES'.

Step 9: Determine Vertical Position of the Housing

This image at right shows that the further out a mantle extends, the more it will interfere with the arc of the lowering TV. The chart below gives clearance heights from the bottom of the TV to the top of various mantel sizes. However, the MM860 Lift Housing {30} is often located even higher on the wall than the TV. To locate the TV so it has enough clearance and doesn't hit the mantel, you will need to know how much higher the Housing is than the bottom of the TV. Then you can locate the Housing on the wall.

NOTE: If there is extra space available, due to a high ceiling for example, then these heights are only minimum requirements.

If mantle extends: Required Clearance:
Less than 10 inches Add 4 inches
10 - 12 inches Add 5 inches
12 - 14 inches Add 7 inches
14 - 17 inches Add 10 inches
17 - 19 inches Add 13 inches

Diagram description: A side view illustrating the calculation for the Lift Housing {30} position. It shows measuring the distance from the TV bottom (from Step 8), adding clearance from the chart, and then subtracting six inches to find the correct height above the mantel to install the Housing. The result is the distance to use for Step 12.

Step 10: Pairing the Remote to MantelMount

To start using the MantelMount MM860, the Remote Control must be linked to the mount. This process is called "Pair". To pair the Remote, follow these steps:

  1. Press any button on the Remote to verify the blue light works.
  2. Attach Power Cable {52} to the mount and plug into wall outlet.
  3. On the side of the electronics housing, press the "Program" Button for 3 seconds until the green Status light rapid blinks.
  4. Press and release the SET button on the remote. Pairing is complete and is confirmed if the Status light stops blinking.

Diagram description: An illustration of the MantelMount RF Remote Control with buttons labeled (UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, SET, HOME, M1, M2). It also shows the electronics housing with 'Program Button' and 'Status Light'.

Step 11: Verify Proper Remote Operation

Lay MantelMount on a flat, stable surface. Press and hold the DOWN button on the Remote until the arm is perpendicular to the Housing. Operate the LEFT and RIGHT buttons to verify the swivel operation. Return the arm to the HOME position before installation.

Diagram description: An illustration of the remote control with the 'Down Button' indicated as opening the mount. It also shows the mount arm in a lowered position.

Step 12: Install the Lift Housing {30}

RECESSED: Trace the Cardboard Template vertically onto the wall about the centerline at the correct height from Step 9. Use a level to ensure the cutout is plumb.

NON-RECESSED: Use the Cardboard Template to mark the location of the Housing. MantelMount is located in the same spot for all installations.

Diagram description: A diagram showing a fireplace and wall, indicating the 'Distance from mantel to opening from Step 9' for installing the Lift Housing {30}.

Step 13: Lower the Arm

After the Lift Housing is installed and power is connected, press and hold the DOWN button on the Remote to lower the Arm to horizontal. DO NOT lower past horizontal in order to avoid hitting the mantel.

Diagram description: An illustration showing the mount arm being lowered using the remote control's DOWN button.

Step 14: Install the TV Frame {26}

WARNING: DO NOT put hands into Lifting Mechanism while operating the mount with the Remote Control.

Install the TV Frame {26} using 4 Screws {20} and Washers {11}. These screws can also be used to fine tune level the TV. Always remember to tighten.

CAUTION Crush Hazard. Stay clear of area between wall and TV during operation.

Diagram description: An illustration showing the TV Frame {26} being attached using screws {20} and washers {11}. It also includes a 'Crush Hazard' warning symbol.

Step 15: Hang the TV

THIS STEP REQUIRES TWO PEOPLE

Hang the TV onto the TV Frame. Some older TVs are not weight balanced. If the TV is much heavier on one side, slide the TV slightly sideways to balance and level the TV. Attach with 4 Screws {18}.

Diagram description: An illustration showing two people hanging a TV onto the TV Frame {26}. It shows attaching the TV with screws {18} and indicates a maximum of '2 inches MAX' for sideways adjustment.

Step 16: Adjusting the Hard Bottom Stop Position

Jog the mount to the maximum safe downward position. Do not swivel the mount sideways. The mount may stop on its own due to the internal limit. Loosen the Locknuts and adjust the Bottom Stop screws to this position. Tighten both locknuts after the adjustments are made.

Diagram description: An illustration showing the mount in its lowest position, with arrows pointing to the bottom stop screws and locknuts that need adjustment.

Step 17: Adjusting the Soft Bottom Stop Position

  1. Once the hard stop is set, jog the mount up slightly from the Hard Stop. This will ensure the mount never hits the Hard Stop. DO NOT JOG THE MOUNT INTO THE HARD STOP!
  2. On the Electronics Housing, quick-press the "Program" Button and verify that the Status light slow blinks.
  3. On the Remote, Press the "SET" button and then within 2 seconds press the "DOWN" button. The Soft Stop should be set. Repeat step (c) if the SET button exceeds the 2 second timeout.
  4. Press the Program Button again to exit Program Mode.

Diagram description: An illustration of the electronics housing with the 'Program' button and 'Status Light', and the remote control with buttons highlighted for setting the soft stop.

Step 18: Adjusting the Hard Side Swivel Stop Positions

Jog the mount to the maximum safe RIGHT side position. Do not raise or lower the mount. Loosen the Locknut and adjust the Swivel Stop screw to the desired stopping position. Note: The locknut can be moved to the other side of the Swivel Bracket to increase the thread length. Proceed to Step 19 to set the Soft Stop. Repeat for the other side.

Diagram description: An illustration showing the mount swiveling to the side, with arrows pointing to the swivel stop screw and locknut for adjustment.

Step 19: Adjusting the Soft Side Swivel Stop Position

  1. Once the RIGHT hard stop is set, jog the mount slightly inward from the Hard Stop. This will ensure the mount never hits the Hard Stop. DO NOT JOG THE MOUNT INTO THE HARD STOP!
  2. On the Electronics Housing, quick-press the "Program" Button and verify that the Status light slow blinks.
  3. On the Remote, Press the "SET" button and then within 2 seconds press the "RIGHT" button. The RIGHT Soft Stop should be set. Return to STEP 18 for other side.
  4. Press the Program Button after the Soft Stops are set in order to exit Program Mode.

Diagram description: An illustration of the remote control and electronics housing, similar to Step 17, for setting the side swivel soft stop.

Step 20: Removing Unwanted Tilt

The TV should be fairly vertical in the up position and parallel to the wall. If the TV is tilted downward, loosen slightly the four bracket screws as shown. Remove any tilt and then tighten the screws.

Diagram description: An illustration showing the TV tilted, with arrows pointing to four screws on the TV frame that need to be loosened to adjust tilt.

Step 21: Setting the Memory Positions

  1. Setting the Memory Positions does not require entering Program Mode.
  2. Once all of the Hard Stops and Soft Stops are set, jog the mount to the first desired viewing position.
  3. On the Remote, Press the "SET" button and then within 2 seconds press the "M1" button. The Memory One position should be set.
  4. Repeat for Memory Two position using the M2 button.

Diagram description: An illustration of the remote control with the 'SET' and 'M1'/'M2' buttons highlighted for saving memory positions.

Step 22: Auto Raising Heat Monitor (ARHM)

This unique safety feature of the MantelMount MM860 will monitor the temperature above your fireplace at all times and raise the mount automatically if the heat behind the TV rises above 130°F (54°C). The thermocouple sensor is located inside the electronics housing.

CAUTION: Never allow children to play around, hang from, or operate MantelMount. Property damage or personal injury can occur.

Diagram description: An illustration showing a TV on the mount near a fireplace, with wavy lines indicating heat rising. A warning symbol is displayed with text about children playing around the mount.

Step 23: Attaching the TV Power Cable

If the Auto Lowering Power Sensor (ALPS) feature is used, attach the TV Power Cable as shown. The cable is plugged into the onboard socket and quickly looped down away from the pinching area of the TV Frame and the swivel portion of the mount. The cable should then be looped again toward the TV with enough extra play to allow full swivel to each side.

Diagram description: An illustration showing the TV Power Cable being routed from the TV to a wall outlet, with 'Anchor {14}' and 'Cable Ties {15}' used. It shows keeping cables 'below pinch area'. A separate diagram shows 'TV Power Cable using ALPS'.

Step 24: Cable Routing Reference

Reference Only: This is one possible configuration for the signal cables. Each segment of the cables has extra length so that the cables are not stressed or kinked when the mount is moved. Ensure that cables do not get pulled or pinched between brackets when the mount is raised.

Covers to assist with cable routing: These covers can be used to hide cables that are routed through the Housing. Cable Cover {60} simply pulls open. Access Cover {32} requires removing two screws {18}.

Diagram description: An illustration showing cable routing behind the mount. It also shows the 'Cable Cover {60}' and 'Access Cover {32}'.
