Installation Steps
-
Check dimensions
Verify door dimensions for compatibility. Ensure the backset is either 2-3/8" (60 mm) or 2-3/4" (70 mm). For doors with 1-1/2" (38 mm) holes, additional preparation may be required. Refer to www.kwikset.com/doorprep for drilling instructions.
-
Adjust the backset of latch (if needed)
If the latch holes are not centered, adjust the latch. For doors with a chiseled edge, ensure the slot is at the bottom. For doors without a chiseled edge, also ensure the slot is at the bottom.
-
Install latch
Hold the latch in front of the door hole, with the latch face flush against the door edge. If the latch holes are centered, proceed to step 3. If not centered, adjust the latch.
-
Prepare exterior keypad (if needed)
For doors with 2-1/8" (54 mm) holes, proceed to step 5. For doors with 1-1/2" (38 mm) holes, temporarily remove the gasket, then reinstall it ensuring a tight seal. Remove the adapter ring.
-
Prepare mounting plate (if needed)
For doors with 2-1/8" (54 mm) holes, proceed to step 6. For doors with 1-1/2" (38 mm) holes, use pliers to remove the two tabs from the mounting plate.
-
Install keypad and mounting plate
Insert the cable underneath the latch. Ensure the tailpiece is horizontal. Locate screws and keep them within reach. Tighten screws evenly. Insert the key and test the latch. If the latch does not extend or retract smoothly, adjust the screws. Remove the key when finished, ensuring the latch bolt is in the unlocked position.
-
Install interior assembly
Rotate the turnpiece AWAY from the door edge. Make sure the tailpiece is horizontal. Align colored edges of connectors and ensure a secure cable connection. Check for smooth turnpiece rotation. If the turnpiece does not rotate, pull the interior assembly off the door and repeat steps 7B and 7C, ensuring the turnpiece is rotated away from the door edge. Make sure the door is unlocked.
-
Load batteries and reset the lock
Ensure correct polarity. Use new, non-rechargeable Alkaline batteries only. Press and hold the Reset button on the interior assembly for five seconds until three beeps are heard. The turnpiece may rotate on its own.
-
IMPORTANT: Enter door handing code and test lock
While the door is OPEN AND UNLOCKED, enter the door handing code to teach the lock the orientation of the door. Press the Lock button once. If programming is successful, the keypad will flash green twice with two beeps. If unsuccessful, the keypad will flash red three times with three beeps; attempt to enter the code again. If the latch bolt extends to lock, the lock has correctly learned the orientation of the door. Unlock the door.
Default MASTERCODE: 0-0-0-0
-
Install strike
Install the strike plate into the door frame, ensuring proper alignment with the latch bolt.
-
Re-key the lock
If needed, re-key the lock to work with your existing key. Refer to the supplied SmartKey Re-key instructions for more information.
-
Program the lock
Programming instructions are located on the reverse side of this document.
User Guide - Programming and Operation
PowerBolt at a Glance
The Powerbolt features a keypad for code entry, a lock button, and a SmartKey tool hole.
Programming Codes
Changing the Mastercode: The mastercode is required for programming. The default is 0-0-0-0. Change this to a 4-10 digit code. Keep the door open and unlocked during programming.
Adding User Codes: Each user code must be unique (4-10 digits). Up to 6 user codes can be programmed. Keep the door open and unlocked during programming.
Adding a One-Time User Code: This code can be used once and is then deleted. Keep the door open and unlocked during programming.
Deleting a Single User Code: Delete specific user codes. Keep the door open and unlocked during programming.
Deleting All User Codes: Deletes all programmed user codes. The lock button and auto-lock will be disabled until new codes are added. Keep the door open and unlocked during programming.
Disabling/Enabling User Codes: This procedure disables or re-enables all user codes. The lock button and auto-lock will be disabled until user codes are re-enabled. Keep the door open and unlocked during programming.
Auto-Lock and Mute Settings
Enabling/Disabling Auto-Lock: When enabled, the door automatically locks after a set time. Repeat the procedure to disable.
Setting Auto-Lock Time Delay: Adjust the auto-lock time delay (default is 30 seconds).
Mute: Mute or unmute the beeping sounds. Note: Low battery indicators and system alerts will not be heard when muted.
Normal Operation
Unlocking the Door: Enter user code, then press the Lock button once.
Locking the Door: Press the Lock button once. Note: If no user codes are programmed or are disabled, the Lock button is disabled.
Troubleshooting
System Alerts:
- Keypad flashes green twice with two beeps: Successful programming.
- Keypad flashes red three times with three beeps: Door jammed, incorrect user code, door handing code not entered, or unsuccessful programming.
- Keypad flashes red five times with five beeps: Five incorrect user codes entered within one minute.
- Keypad flashes red 10 times with 10 beeps: Low battery.
Troubleshooting Common Issues:
- Turnpiece cannot rotate: Reinstall the lock, ensuring the tailpiece is horizontal.
- Lock cannot be locked/unlocked by keypad: Ensure at least one code is programmed and user codes are not disabled. Perform a factory reset if necessary.
- Keypad does not respond: Check cable connections and battery installation.
- Latch bolt locks up, turnpiece won't rotate: Re-enter the door handing code.
- User code won't unlock door: Verify the user code and ensure the Lock button is pressed after entry.
- Lock emits alert when locking with door closed: Ensure the strike plate hole is deep enough and aligned with the latch bolt. Reposition the strike if needed.
Factory Reset
A factory reset deletes all codes and restores the default mastercode (0-0-0-0) and user code (1-2-3-4). Auto-lock will be disabled after a reset. Follow the steps to perform a factory reset.
