Installation Steps
-
Check dimensions
Verify door hole size (2-1/8" or 1-1/2") and backset (2-3/8" or 2-3/4"). Additional door preparation may be required for 1-1/2" holes. Consult drilling instructions at www.kwikset.com/doorprep.
-
Adjust the backset of latch (if needed)
Hold the latch in front of the door hole. If latch holes are not centered, adjust the latch. See "Latch Adjustment" section. Ensure tailpiece is horizontal.
-
Install latch
For doors with chiseled edge, ensure the latch is installed correctly. If needed, order a drive-in latch from Kwikset.
-
Prepare exterior keypad (if needed)
Follow instructions for doors with 2-1/8" or 1-1/2" holes.
-
Prepare mounting plate (if needed)
Ensure the slot on the mounting plate is at the bottom. Remove adapter ring if necessary.
-
Install keypad and mounting plate
Secure the exterior assembly and mounting plate using screws (L). Ensure the cable goes underneath the latch. Keep screws within reach and tighten evenly.
-
Load batteries and reset the lock
Press and hold the Reset button on the interior assembly for five seconds until three beeps are heard. Ensure correct battery polarity (4x AA). Use new, non-rechargeable Alkaline batteries. Reinstall gasket for a tight seal.
-
Install interior assembly
Align colored edges of connectors and ensure secure cable connection. Check for smooth turnpiece rotation. If the turnpiece does not rotate smoothly, pull the interior assembly off and repeat steps 7B and 7C, ensuring the tailpiece is horizontal.
-
IMPORTANT: Enter door handing code and test lock
With the door OPEN AND UNLOCKED, enter the default MASTERCODE (0-0-0-0) followed by the Lock button. The keypad will flash green twice with two beeps if successful. If unsuccessful, it will flash red three times with three beeps. Attempt again. Then, press the Lock button once. If the latch bolt extends to lock, the lock has correctly learned the door orientation.
-
Install strike
Install the strike plate on the door frame.
-
Re-key the lock
If needed, re-key the lock to work with your existing key using the supplied SmartKey Re-key instructions.
-
Program the lock
Programming instructions are located on the reverse side of this document.

Troubleshooting
- a. The turnpiece cannot rotate or operate the lock: Remove and reinstall the lock, ensuring the tailpiece is horizontal.
- b. The lock cannot be locked or unlocked by the keypad: Ensure at least one code is programmed and user codes are not disabled. Perform a factory reset if needed.
- c. The keypad doesn’t respond: Check cable connections and battery installation.
- d. Latch bolt locks up and turnpiece won't rotate: Re-enter the door handing code.
- e. User code won't unlock the door: Verify user code and ensure Lock button is pressed. Use key to unlock and call technical support if needed.
