Delivery Content

The delivery content includes the Verifone Carbon Mobile 5 terminal, a battery, and a charging cable.

Power Button

The power button is used to turn the device on and off.

Steps to Insert SAM and/or SIM Cards

Follow these steps to insert SAM and/or SIM cards:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Remove the battery cover.
  3. Remove the primary battery.
  4. Insert the SIM card with contacts facing down, sliding it into the slot until fully inserted.
  5. Ensure the card orientation matches the icon in the housing.
  6. Replace the primary battery and then the battery cover.
  7. If the device was powered on during insertion, reboot the device after inserting the SIM.

Note: Nano SIM cards are 8.8mm, and Micro SIM cards are 12mm.

Load Paper Roll

Instructions for loading the paper roll are provided visually.

Terminal and PC Communication Options

The terminal can communicate with a PC via USB-C or USB-A connections.

Terminal Charging Options

The terminal can be charged using a USB-C connection or a USB-A connection to a power source or PC.

Card Reading Interfaces

The terminal supports various card reading interfaces, including chip, magnetic stripe, and contactless payments.

Barcode Scanner

The terminal is equipped with a barcode scanner.

SIM Setup

Description

The device features one Nano SIM slot and one micro SAM or second micro SIM slot.

User Action

To install SIM cards, turn off the device, remove the battery cover, and then remove the primary battery. Insert the SIM card with contacts facing down, sliding it into the slot until fully inserted. Ensure the card orientation matches the engraved icon. Replace the battery and cover. Reboot the device if it was powered on during insertion.

Note: The device requires the battery to be kept charged to prevent damage.

Charging the Battery

Description

To charge the battery.

User Action

After unpacking, charge the Verifone Carbon Mobile 5 device for eight hours or until fully charged.

Manual Start Up

Description

To start up or power on the terminal.

User Action

Hold the start/power button for about 3 seconds until the device displays the start-up screen.

Manual Shutdown

Description

To shut down or power off the terminal.

User Action

Hold the start/power button for about 1 second until the message is displayed on the screen. Touch the "Power Off" selection to turn off.

Language Selection

Description

Displays the list of supported languages with locales.

User Action

Language and Country can be selected here, which will be applied to the system and all apps that support the selected language.

Optional Info

Provides a summary about the device, which can be used to validate the software stack before starting the activation process. This includes Model name, Serial number, Device manufacturer, Battery level, VHQ Customer ID, Certificate Sponsor ID, Android version, Build version, Engage ADK and VOS versions, information about installed warranty keys, current connection status, SIM card status, Part number, URL of VHQ server, Heartbeat frequency, and Current IP address.

Wi-Fi Setup

Description

Displays a list of available Wi-Fi Networks (SSID, strength). Unsecured or WEP networks cannot be selected.

User Action

The user can select a secured access point and enter credentials. It is possible to move to the next screen if Ethernet/Mobile is connected.

Description

Wi-Fi network credential input. If the password entered is correct, a connection will be established automatically. There is an option to configure a static connection using "Advanced Options".

User Action

Enter network credentials. The user can return to the previous screen or use "Advanced Options" for static network configuration.

Optional Static and/or Proxy Configuration

Selecting "Advanced Options" allows the user to enter static network configuration information for the selected access point. Proxy configuration (Manual or Auto-config) can also be entered. The same configuration settings are available for Ethernet connection types.

Network Detection

Description

The terminal checks internet availability and time configuration, which are used to communicate with the servers.

User Action

The user is not required to take any action at this stage.

Configure Device ID

Description

Device ID entry.

User Action

The user enters the received Device ID (DID) in the corresponding field and clicks submit.

Software Upgrade

Description

This section details the stages of the VHQ update process and software package installation.

User Action

The user is not required to take any action and should wait for all installation steps to complete. The installation begins as soon as packages are downloaded. Multiple reboots may occur.

Installation Complete

Description

The device is ready to use.

User Action

Click OK to confirm the dialog and complete the Setup Wizard.

Optional Info

Selecting "More info" displays a pop-up with device summary for software stack validation.

Description

After the out-of-box (OOB) process, the user sees the standard terminal home screen.

User Action

The user has access to the full functionality of the terminal.

Note: Depending on the operating mode, the terminal may start with a specific application instead of the home screen, especially in POS mode settings.

SIM Handling

Single SIM Handling

When a single SIM is inserted, the CM5P detects and selects the used slot automatically.

User Action

Pull down the notification curtain to view "Quick Settings". The text under the icon indicates the SIM slot in use. A long press on the tile opens the SIM settings menu, which is also accessible via Settings > SIM cards.

Dual SIM Handling and Switching

The CM5P software does not actively switch between SIMs. Switching is done manually through Quick Settings or the Settings menu.

User Action

Navigate to Settings > SIM Cards. Under "Preferred SIM for Cellular data", select the desired SIM for data usage.

Payment Device Modes

Description

Device modes allow users to change the default or home application behavior and lock the device to a specific application.

Modes of Operation

  1. Standard Android Mode
  2. POS Mode

Standard Android Mode

If the device is set to Standard Android Mode, it boots into the standard home/launcher application. The user can decide which application to launch and when.

POS Mode

In POS mode, a default application (e.g., 'Connect Express') starts automatically when the device is switched on and returns to when the "home" button is pressed. Standard Launcher applications are accessible from the notification curtain.

Default Application

To configure the default app, go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Default apps > Home app. Select your preferred home app.

User Management

Description

The user management component requires user authentication. Three roles are supported: Admin, Manager, and Cashier.

User Authentication Management

The Connect Express menu allows access to settings. The "Security" section within Connect Express manages authentication levels.

Passcode Set Up

Description

Displays passcode requirements if not set up previously. Requirements include: no more than 3 repeated digits, no sequential digits, Manager passcode between 6-12 characters, Cashier passcode between 4-12 characters, and Manager/Cashier passcodes cannot be the same.

User Action

Enter and re-enter Manager passcode. Enter and re-enter Cashier passcode.

Passcode Management

Passcodes can be changed if known. The Manager can change the Cashier passcode. Passcodes can be reset via Admin daily password from a Help desk. Authentication levels for Sales Overview and Settings can be set to None, Manager, or Cashier.

Transaction Selection

Description

The transaction selection involves amount input and transaction type selection. The default maximum amount is €1,000,000. If the entered amount exceeds this, the user is prompted for a valid amount. The terminal allows the merchant to choose the transaction type after user authentication.

Purchase

The merchant enters the transaction amount, which is validated against configuration. A zero amount is not allowed for purchases. Selecting "Card" starts card payment. Selecting "Other" prompts for other transaction options like refund.

Purchase - Continued

Description

The customer can insert, tap, or swipe a card. The customer can view purchased items via the Basket icon. The process includes handling chip cards, contactless cards, and magnetic stripe (MSR) cards, with specific procedures for errors, declines, and fallbacks.

Error Scenarios: Transaction cancellation, operation timeout, device crashes, unsupported card schemes, and incorrect PIN entry are detailed.

Purchase - Continued

Description

This indicates online authorization. Error scenarios include card removal during authorization, or device reboots, which may lead to cancellation and reversal.

Description

Informs the customer of successful payment completion and prompts card removal. The terminal can be configured for audible alerts. In accessibility mode, voice prompts are used for card removal.

User Action

The customer removes the card. The screen remains active as long as the card is inserted.

Purchase - Continued

Description

Prompts the user for signature if required by the card, host, or if PIN entry is bypassed. For non-chip transactions, signature is required for amounts exceeding a minimum threshold.

User Action

Customer enters signature.

Description

Prompts the merchant to verify the signature. If declined, the transaction is declined, and a reversal is sent.

Purchase - Continued

Description

The customer selects whether to receive a customer receipt.

Customer Action

The receipt is skipped or printed based on user selection.

Description

If the terminal is configured for two receipts, this prompt allows the user to tear off the first receipt before the second is printed.

Description

The user decides whether to print the merchant copy. If the screen times out, the merchant receipt is printed regardless.

Description

After payment, the screen returns to the default amount entry screen.

Refund

Description

The merchant enters the transaction amount, can add multiple items, and reset items. The top right menu allows saving or canceling the cart. The top left menu accesses administrative functions. The "Other" button provides transaction type options, including refund.

User Action

Selecting the "Other" button displays transaction options. Selecting "Refund" initiates the refund flow. User authentication may be required.

Description

The merchant selects the payment method for the refund. If only card payment is enabled, this screen is skipped. Otherwise, "Other Payments" displays additional options.

User Action

Selecting "Card or Mobile" proceeds to the Insert, Swipe, or Tap screen.

Refund

Description

The customer can insert, tap, or swipe a card for refund. The transaction flow is similar to the purchase flow.

The user decides whether to print the customer receipt. If the screen times out, the merchant receipt is printed regardless.

Order History

Administration Menu

The user can access transaction history, account settings, and reports via this menu.

Order History

Displays saved transaction history. Icons indicate transaction type (sale, refund, void). Transactions can be searched using various options.

Use Action

The user can view and print the order history per day.

Report - Sales Overview

Provides a summary of transactions for the current day, previous day, past 7 days, and past 30 days. Total reports are available for print. User authentication may be required.

Void

Order Details

Displays transaction details. Allowed operations include voiding transactions and reprinting receipts.

Description

Void is selected, and the user chooses a reason for void. Selecting a reason continues the void processing.

Description

Indicates online authorization by the device communicating with the host to complete the transaction successfully.

Void - Continued

Description

The user selects whether to receive a customer receipt. The receipt is skipped or printed based on user selection.

Reprinting Receipts

Description

If multiple transactions exist, the user selects which transaction's receipt to reprint.

The user selects the transaction for receipt printing.

The user selects the receipt copy type: Merchant or Customer. The selected copy is printed or skipped.

Full Software Update

Description

Details the software update process: download progress, verification, and installation. The update cannot be interrupted and requires a device reboot.

Note: Be ready for a device reboot after software verification completes. Contact the Helpdesk in case of failure.

Android Applications Update

Description

Shows the progress of application downloads.

Description

Indicates application download completion and installation. No user action is needed; restarts are automatic.

Payment Application Configuration Update

Description

Indicates that new payment parameters have been downloaded and will be applied upon completion. No user action is required; restarts are automatic.

Diagnostic App

Description

The launcher displays all available applications, including the Diagnostics application. Selecting it shows diagnostic options.

User Action

Click on the Diagnostics application. Select any option for further details.

Summary

The "Summary" option in the Diagnostics menu provides a general status of key device functions. Pulling down the menu updates the status of each item.

Fields: Terminal status, Connectivity status, Online status, Keys, VHQ heartbeat, Printer status, Trigger logs upload.

Device Information

Provides details such as Model, Manufacturer, Serial number, Battery type, Model type, Part number, Date & Time, Battery level, Cycle count, and Battery health.

Software Details

Includes Android version, Kernel version, Build number, Environment, Applications, Engage Software Details (Terminal OS version, ADK version, Terminal applications).

Diagnostic App-Continued

Network Information

Provides details on Connection status, Online status, Connectivity disconnects today, Device IP, Connectivity type, Preferred SIM, and a "Need help?" option linking to Verifone support.

Verifone Cloud

Includes Terminal management (VHQ server URL), Customer ID, Heartbeat frequency, and VHQ heartbeat status.

Peripherals

Shows information about connected peripherals like printers, including Printer status and a list of known printers.

Diagnostic App-Continued

Transaction Summary

Details successful and failed transactions by technology type (Contactless, Chip, Magnetic stripe, Manual entry, Unknown type) and total sessions.

Fallback Counts

Details fallback counts from Contactless to Chip, Chip to MSR, and MSR to Manual entry.

Device Manager App

Description

Click on the Device Manager application for details on Host Param Options, Configuration Options, Configuration Report, and Configure Device ID.

Configuration Options

Configuration options are available via the Device Manager menu, allowing users to view and edit Terminal configuration.

Configuration Report

The Configuration Report is available via the Device Manager menu, allowing users to view and print the report.

Purchase with Accessibility Option

Description

Accessibility functions aid visually-impaired customers, supporting Assistant PIN Entry, Accessible PIN Entry, and training exploration. Users can double tap to turn on accessibility mode, choose contrast colors, and prompts are read aloud.

Description

Prompts the customer to enter PIN using accessibility features. The customer can drag fingers to navigate the virtual number pad. Beeps indicate movement, and double-tapping selects a number. The OK button confirms the PIN, and Cancel exits the screen. Accessibility mode must be enabled for each transaction.

User enters the PIN using the accessibility feature.

Description

Accessible PIN Entry

Description

Accessible PIN entry allows blind individuals to enter PINs without disclosing them to the merchant. A special chime indicates when the function is enabled. Users can double-tap or press the tactile button to enter Accessible PIN Entry mode. The total amount and card presentation instructions are vocalized. Multi-touch is rejected. The keypad is a 12-pad with audio feedback for key navigation. Users can confirm with OK or cancel with Cancel. After two unsuccessful PIN tries, a training session is initiated. The terminal remains in accessibility mode for subsequent transactions until disabled.

Assistant PIN Entry

Description

Assistant PIN Entry Keypad functions like the Standard PIN Entry Keypad with magnification, color contrast, and audio feedback. Users can choose Assistant mode via a yellow button on the card prompt screen, selecting from four color combinations. Color blind users can select contrast colors for better visibility.

Assistant PIN Entry-Continued

Description

The user is prompted to enter the PIN. The background color is chosen by the customer for best contrast on the card prompt screen via the assistant button.
