Fuel and Refueling
Safety Precautions
No Smoking or Open Flames: Do not smoke or use open flames and sources of ignition while refueling. This can cause fire or explosion, leading to serious injury or death.
Ignition Sources: Keep potential ignition sources away from fuel vapors. This can cause fire or explosion, leading to serious injury or death.
Engine Off: Turn off the engine while refueling. The engine is a source of high temperatures and electrical sparks.
Electronic Devices: Turn off personal electronic devices, such as mobile phones or music players.
Vehicles with Gasoline Engines
- Do not use leaded gasoline, lead substitutes, or fuel additives.
- Do not use fuel system cleaning products not approved by Land Rover.
Octane Rating
For optimal performance, fuel economy, and drivability, use premium unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 95. If premium gasoline is unavailable, unleaded gasoline with a lower octane rating (up to 91) may be used, but this may lead to reduced engine power, increased fuel consumption, engine knocking, and other operational problems.
Do not use fuel with an octane rating below 91, as this can cause serious engine damage.
Note: Light knocking sounds may occur during acceleration or when driving uphill. If persistent knocking occurs even after using the recommended octane fuel or when driving at a constant speed on a level road, contact your dealer or authorized workshop. Failure to do so may result in improper vehicle operation, for which Land Rover is not responsible. If in doubt, consult your dealer or authorized workshop.
Environmentally friendly unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 98 can be used instead of 95 octane gasoline where available.
Ethanol
Fuel with up to 10% ethanol content (E5 and E10) can be used.
This vehicle is not designed for operation on fuel with an ethanol content exceeding 10%.
Do not use E85 (85% ethanol) fuel, as it can cause serious damage to the engine and fuel system.
Fuel with up to 10% ethanol (ethyl alcohol) can be used. Ensure that the octane rating of such fuel is not lower than that of the recommended unleaded gasoline. Most drivers will not notice a difference in vehicle behavior when using fuel with ethanol. If a difference is noticeable, revert to using traditional unleaded gasoline.
For Brazil only: For vehicles intended for use in Brazil, E22 fuel may be used.
This vehicle is not designed for operation on fuel with an ethanol content exceeding 25%.
Methanol
Avoid using fuel containing methanol whenever possible.
Using fuel containing methanol can cause serious damage to the engine and fuel system. Land Rover is not responsible for performance degradation due to the use of such fuel and will not consider warranty claims for it.
Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE)
Unleaded gasoline containing up to 15% MTBE, an ether-based additive derived from petroleum products, may be used. MTBE is used by some refineries to increase fuel octane rating.
Modified Gasoline
The composition of this fuel is designed to reduce exhaust emissions. Land Rover fully supports efforts to preserve atmospheric purity and encourages the use of modified gasoline where possible.
Vehicles with Diesel Engines
Use only high-quality diesel fuel that complies with the European standard EN590 or equivalent.
Do not use biodiesel fuel based on rapeseed methyl ester (RME), except for proprietary brands containing no more than 7% biodiesel. Land Rover is not responsible for damage caused by the use of fuel with an RME content exceeding 7%.
Diesel fuel quality can vary in different regions. Use only premium or high-quality fuel available in your area. High-quality fuel extends the life of engine components. Low-quality fuel contains more sulfur, which negatively affects engine components. In case of using low-quality fuel, exhaust gases may be slightly discolored.
Prolonged use of additives is not recommended. Do not add kerosene or gasoline to diesel fuel.
If you accidentally refuel with gasoline instead of diesel fuel: Do not attempt to start the engine. Contact your dealer or authorized workshop immediately. Land Rover is not responsible for damage caused by the use of any other fuel.
Sulfur Content: If your vehicle is equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), the maximum sulfur content must not exceed 0.005%. Using non-compliant fuel will cause serious damage to the DPF. The sulfur content in diesel fuel used in Land Rover vehicles must not exceed 0.3% (3000 ppm).
In some countries, diesel fuel contains a higher sulfur content. In such cases, maintenance intervals should be shortened to reduce the negative impact on engine components. If in doubt, consult your local dealer or authorized Land Rover workshop. See page 227, DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF).
Running Out of Fuel
Do not run the fuel tank completely empty. This can damage the engine, fuel system, and the vehicle's emission control system.
If the fuel tank is completely empty, a minimum of 4 liters (0.9 gallons) of fuel will be required to start the engine. After refueling, turn the ignition on for five minutes before starting the engine. The vehicle will need to travel 1.6 – 5 km (1 – 3 miles) for the engine management and control systems to return to their normal state.
Note: If the fuel tank is completely empty, it is recommended to consult a qualified specialist.
Diesel Engines: Vehicles with diesel engines have a system that prevents the fuel tank from being completely emptied. When the fuel level reaches a certain minimum, the engine switches to a reduced power mode. This is followed by engine shutdown approximately 1.6 km (1 mile) later. This feature prevents the fuel from being completely depleted and protects the fuel system. If the fuel level indicator shows a low level or the warning light illuminates, refuel as soon as possible at the nearest gas station, adding at least 4 liters (0.9 gallons) of fuel.
Fuel Tank Capacity
Avoid completely emptying the fuel tank and refrain from continuing the journey if the fuel level indicator shows empty. As a small reserve of fuel remains in the tank (even when the indicator shows empty), the amount of fuel that can be added to an empty tank will be less than specified below.
Total Tank Capacity (Usable): Liters (Gallons) | |
---|---|
V6 Engines | 105 (27.7) |
V8 Engines | 85 (22.5) |
Fuel Specifications

For diesel engines operated in Algeria, Egypt, India, Libya, Morocco, Pakistan, and Tunisia, only premium diesel fuel is permitted.
Refueling Procedure
If the protective system has activated, refuel the vehicle and then start the engine following the procedure below:
- Press the brake pedal, then press and hold the START/STOP button (Engine Start/Stop) for five seconds while turning the engine crankshaft.
- Release the START/STOP button.
- Press the brake pedal, then press and release the START/STOP button to start the engine. The engine should start within approximately five seconds.
Note: If the engine does not start, turn the ignition to the ready position, wait ten seconds, and repeat the starting procedure.
Do not turn the engine crankshaft for more than 30 seconds consecutively.
Fuel Filler Cap: After refueling, tighten the cap until it clicks 3 times. Close the fuel filler flap until it clicks shut.
Fuel Filler Neck
Observe all rules and warnings on the label located on the inside of the fuel filler neck.
The fuel filler neck is located at the rear, on the right side of the vehicle.
- Ensure the vehicle is unlocked, then press the left side of the flap to open it.
- Open the flap completely.
- To remove the cap, turn it counterclockwise.
- Use the retainer to hold the cap away from the filler neck while refueling.
Refueling Precautions:
- When refueling, ensure all windows, doors, and the sunroof are tightly closed, especially if children or animals are in the vehicle.
- Do not attempt to fill the tank to its maximum capacity. If the vehicle is parked on an incline, in direct sunlight, or in high temperatures, fuel expansion may cause it to spill.
- Do not use an auxiliary heater while refueling. This can ignite fuel vapors, causing fire or explosion.
- Carefully check the information on the fuel pump to ensure you are refueling with the correct fuel.
- If the vehicle is refueled with the wrong type of fuel, contact qualified specialists before starting the engine.
Automatic Shut-off: Fuel pumps are equipped with automatic shut-off sensors to prevent overfilling. Insert the fuel nozzle fully and fill the tank until the nozzle automatically shuts off. Do not attempt to continue refueling after this.
Note: For refueling stations used for commercial diesel vehicles, accelerated fuel delivery is used. Accelerated fuel delivery may cause premature shut-off and spillage. Therefore, it is recommended to use regular gas stations for passenger cars.
Water in Fuel
If the information panel displays the WATER IN FUEL SEE HANDBOOK warning, it means that excessive water has accumulated in the fuel filter sedimenter. Contact your dealer or authorized Land Rover workshop to drain the water from the filter.
Fuel System Protection from Incorrect Fueling
The fuel system protection for diesel vehicles may not function if the nozzle for unleaded gasoline is only partially inserted. If this occurs, fuel may spill from the filler neck.
Note: The driver is responsible for refueling the vehicle with the correct type of fuel. The fuel system protection is designed to reduce the risk of refueling with the wrong type of fuel.
Some countries have a fuel system protection system integrated into the filler neck for diesel vehicles. If the narrow end of the unleaded gasoline nozzle is fully inserted into the filler neck, the fuel system protection will activate.
Note: Some fuel can nozzles and older-style fuel filler nozzles may also activate the fuel system protection.
After the system activates, a yellow protective device will appear in the filler neck. This prevents fuel from being added to the tank. Before refueling with the correct fuel, this device must be returned to its original position. The appropriate tool is located in the luggage compartment.
Do not rotate the tool when the teeth are engaged.
Note: After this, the yellow protective device should no longer be visible in the filler neck. Return the tool to the luggage compartment.
To reinstall the fuel system protection device:
- Insert the special tool (teeth upwards) into the filler neck until it stops.
- Engage the teeth by pressing down on the tool.
- With the teeth engaged, press the tool and slowly pull it out of the filler neck to return the protection device to its original position.
Fuel Consumption
The fuel consumption values below are based on calculations using the EU's standard test method (new EU test method according to Directive 99/100/EC) and the Passenger Car Fuel Consumption Act of 1996 (as amended).
Under normal operating conditions, actual fuel consumption may differ from test data due to driving style, road and weather conditions, load, and vehicle condition.
