Diagram shows a metal guardplate (A) with two large cutouts for a lock mechanism and smaller holes for screws.
Check to be sure this unit matches the backset, door thickness, and bore size for your installation.
Diagram 1 illustrates measurements for a door: Bore Size (2-1/8 in. Standard), Backset, and Door Thickness.
For combination deadlatch and deadbolt models, check bore spacing, center to center.
Diagram 2 shows two bore holes on a door edge and indicates 'Bore Spacing' measured center to center.
Remove both handles from the door by removing attaching screws from the base of the inside handle. If none are visible, remove the knob by depressing the release button, then remove the base cover by prying up at the clip point to expose the screws. For new installations, drill holes using your lock manufacturer's instructions.
Diagram 3 shows how to remove a door handle: locate the Knob Release Button, pry the Base Cover to expose Attaching Screws.
For new door installation or added security where the door is undamaged and the wood around the latchbolt is solid, slip guardplate (A) over the latchbolt and install combination thread no. 8 x 1 in. screws (AA) through the guardplate, through the latch faceplate, and into the door.
Hardware Used:
Diagram 4 shows the guardplate (A) positioned over the latchbolt, with screws (AA) being inserted through the guardplate and into the door.
For doors that are split, broken, misdrilled, or have weak support around the latchbolt, remove the latchbolt from the door and bolt the latch to the guardplate using the nuts provided (CC). Drill a shallow recess 3/8 in. in diameter where the latch faceplate screws usually go to allow for the nuts to seat in the edge of the door.
Hardware Used:
Diagram 5 illustrates a shallow recess drilled into the door edge to accommodate the nuts (CC) which secure the latchbolt to the guardplate (A) using screws (AA).
After sliding the guardplate onto the door, install the outside handle assembly through the bore, ensuring the latch spindle properly engages the torque drive of the latchbolt. Close the door to test the jamb clearance. If the door closes properly, finish assembly of the inside handle. If the guardplate hits the jamb, check the hinges for loose screws or worn hinge pins. If these are all right, you must remove 1/32 in. of the door edge under the guardplate; use a pencil to mark the area.
Diagram 6 shows the guardplate installed on the door edge, with a pencil marking an area for potential adjustment.
To remove 1/32 in. of the door edge, remove the handle set, guardplate, and latchbolt. Mortise the door edge 1/32 in. to allow for jamb clearance. Use an X-acto knife to cut along the pencil lines to prevent splintering. Then use a wood file or coarse sandpaper with a block to remove material. Reinstall the latchbolt, guardplate, and handle.
Diagram 7 illustrates using an X-Acto knife and a wood file to mortise the door edge by 1/32 inch.
Install the side plate screws (BB).
Hardware Used:
Diagram 8 shows the installation of side plate screws (BB) into the door hardware assembly.
