1. General

This manual provides essential information for the installation, utilization, and maintenance of AQUASTRONG swimming pool pumps. It is recommended to read this manual attentively and keep it for future reference. These pumps are designed for permanently installed pools and are self-priming centrifugal pumps. For optimal function, the water temperature should not exceed 95°F (35°C). AQUASTRONG pumps undergo stringent hydraulic and electrical testing. Please read this manual carefully before installing the pump. Installation must comply with current standards. AQUASTRONG disclaims responsibility for consequences arising from failure to comply with installation instructions. Adherence to electrical connection diagrams is recommended to prevent motor overloading.

2. Pump Fixing

Caution: Ensure pump and terminal connections are protected from moisture and potential flooding. Installation is authorized only for swimming pools and basins compliant with applicable standards. Pumps are typically installed between the skimmer and the pool filter, positioned as close as possible to the water level to minimize suction distance and reduce head losses. It is recommended not to install the pump more than 10 ft (3 m) above the water level. Priming may take several minutes regardless of pump height or model capacity. The pump must be mounted on a firm base, secured by the base's attachment holes. Install the pump with the shaft in a horizontal position and the pre-filter cover on top. Ensure the transparent cover is accessible for cleaning the filtering basket. Pumps must be installed in a dry, well-ventilated area, sheltered from rain. Consult a specialist supplier or qualified electrician if unsure.

Diagram Description: A diagram illustrates the pump's components: 1. Plug screw, 2. Pump body, 3. Nut, 4. Inlet (2" ID), 5. Outlet (2" ID), 6. Nut, 7. Terminal box, 8. Motor, 9. Base.

3. Wiring Instruction

Electrical Requirements: All electrical wiring must conform to applicable local codes, regulations, and the National Electrical Code® (NEC). If circuit protection by a GFCI cannot be verified, contact a qualified electrician. The unit must connect to a supply circuit protected by a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI), which should be tested regularly. If the GFCI interrupts power without the test button being pushed, it indicates a ground current, signaling a potential electric shock hazard; cease use and seek professional correction.

The pump accepts 220V, 60Hz single-phase input power. Terminal block connections can handle up to 16AWG solid or stranded wire. Fast-on type quick connectors may also be used, subject to local electrical codes. Field wiring connections must be made permanently to the grounding terminal (see Figure 4) according to local electrical code. The drive operates on 2-phase Line-Line-Ground and Line-Neutral-Ground systems. The pump must be permanently connected via a circuit breaker as specified by local electrical code.

⚡ WARNING: RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK.

  1. Ensure all electrical breakers and switches are OFF before wiring the motor. Wait five (5) minutes after disconnecting power before opening or servicing the drive.
  2. Select wire size according to the National Electrical Code and local codes. Use a heavier gauge wire if in doubt. Verify wiring voltage is within the operating range.
  3. Ensure all electrical connections are clean and tight.
  4. Cut wires to appropriate length to prevent overlap or touching when connected to the terminal board.
  5. Permanently ground the motor using the ground screw inside the rear of the controller interface (see Figure 4). Use the correct wire size and type specified by the National Electrical Code. Ensure the ground wire connects to an electrical service ground.
  6. Bond the motor to all metal parts of the pool structure, electrical equipment, metal conduit, and metal piping within 5 ft (1.5 M) of the swimming pool walls, spa, or hot tub, following the National Electrical Code. UL requires a solid copper bonding conductor not smaller than 8 AWG. See Figure 4.
  7. The pump must be permanently connected to a circuit breaker, 2-pole timer, or 2-pole relay. If powered by a GFCI circuit breaker, use a dedicated circuit breaker without other electrical loads.

Diagram Description: A diagram shows the grounding terminal connection point.

4. Installation of the pipes

If using plastic pipes, seal them with Teflon tape. The diameter of the delivery and suction pipes must be equal to or greater than the pump's inlet and outlet ports. Minimize head losses by using the shortest possible suction pipe and avoiding bends or twists. Unions must be new and clean for absolute tightness. The pipes must not impose mechanical loads on the pump. Installing suction and delivery valves is recommended for pump isolation.

5. Electrical Installation

The user must ensure the building installation's protective earthing is effective. An authorized qualified person should inspect the building installation if necessary. The pump's electrical power supply must include a residual current device (RCD) with a rated residual operating current not exceeding 30 mA. The power cable must comply with type H05RN-F 3X0.75mm. Single-phase pump motors have built-in thermal protection. Always ensure electrical power is switched off before working on the pump.

Caution: The pump must be located in Zone 2 (at least 2 meters from the pool), and the power supply connection in Zone 3 (at least 3.5 meters from the pool), according to IEC 60364-7-702 standards. The pump's equipotentiality terminal must be connected to the electric wiring's equipotentiality terminal before use, even with the earthing terminal. Consult an electrical specialist if in doubt. The pump is supplied by an isolating transformer or via an RCD (max 30mA). Electrical installation must comply with national wiring rules. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent, or a similarly qualified person to avoid hazards. Pumps can operate continuously. An all-pole disconnection switch must be directly connected to the supply terminals with contact separation in all poles. Consult your electric specialist if you have any doubts.

Please ask professional people to install the swimming pool pump.

6. Check before First Starting the Pump

  1. Verify that the mains power voltage and frequency match those indicated on the pump's identification plate.
  2. Check that the pump shaft turns freely.
  3. Unscrew the pre-filter cover and fill the pump with water up to the level of the suction pipe.
  4. Firmly screw the pre-filter cover back in place.
  5. If the motor does not start or no water is extracted, refer to the "Problems and Solutions" table.
  6. NEVER OPERATE THE PUMP WHEN NOT FILLED WITH WATER or with the water inlet sucked.

7. Starting the Pump

After filling the pump with water, open all suction and delivery valves and start the motor. Wait for self-priming. The pump is correctly primed when the water level is just below the transparent cover.

8. Timing Instruction

Calculate the appropriate pump run time based on the pool size. Set the desired start time. Press the timer button to select the running hours, then press the ON button. The pump will operate for the set duration daily at the current time.

Example: Pumps scheduled to run for ten hours daily from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. next day.

  • Step 1: Wait until 10:00 p.m. Plug in the power supply; the indicator light will flash.
  • Step 2: Press the timer button to select "10" hours.
  • Step 3: Press the ON/OFF button. The pump will now run for 10 hours each night starting at 10 p.m.

Tip: There is no functional difference between the indicator light flashing red or green.

9. Servicing

AQUASTRONG pumps require minimal servicing. Periodically clean the pre-filter: close suction and delivery valves, loosen black nuts, remove the pre-filter cover, withdraw the filtering basket, and clean it. Examine the pre-filter cover gasket and replace if damaged. For winter storage, empty the pump (remove drain plug) to prevent freezing damage, clean it, and store it in a dry, well-ventilated place. Do not attempt to repair the pump yourself; contact AQUASTRONG technical service for any failures. Always disconnect power before performing any servicing.
